I haven't been here in a while. fact is, I've been pretty busy. I returned to work on October 7. that is the D.O.T. required three months after OHS to receive my DOT medical card. I am doing great. OHS seems like such a long time ago. I still have days when I know that I'm not 100% but they are becoming more infrequent. On those days when I don't feel so well, I have to remind myself that 3 months post-op is not that long ago. I have a new work schedule that is much more accommodating of my desire to exercise and eat better. My wife and I are now empty nesters as both of our children are in school in Fl. This has been a very tumultuous and emotional year for us. My perspective on life has changed immensely. Although I thought my Christian walk was pretty solid, the happenings of this year have deepened my faith in Christ and caused me to reconsider those things I thought were important. For anyone approaching the day of surgery, look to God for comfort. If you don't know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, take care of it this day. He gives eternal life for the future and comfort and peace for the present. And, the great thing is He doesn't remember your past! God Bless all. JPJ

Meredith Bray Amen! Once I gave everything (except the cooking) over to God, it was a much easier journey. I still have the occasional PANG when I'm making a left turn in my 99 Freightliner, but it's mild and inconsistent. Isn't it nice to have the motivation to improve ourselves? I've gone back to school since recovering, God is leading me somewhere I'm not sure of yet. Take care!

We just got back from Pensacola for a quick visit with my daughter. It was wonderful. my first post op big adventure.
I am pleased to report the following: While travelling through a severe storm in Auburn, a huge oak was struck by lightening and fell across the interstate. Not wanting to see traffic back up, I pulled onto the shoulder, put on my galoshes, rain beanie and PIG POWER action T-shirt and and then hoisted the oak over the guardrail thereby allowing traffic to once again flow smoothly. We exited the interstate and went to Wendy's for lunch. For some reason, since my surgery, I have a desire to root around in the dumpster for lunch instead of ordering from the menu. Maybe I'll figure it out someday. Anyway, my wife led me to the counter where we ordered lunch. Just as I was removing my galoshes, several very pretty women approached me thanking me profusely with batting eyes and fanning themselves with Wendy's table tents advertising free coffee with a breakfast biscuit, for my act of bravery they had witnessed on the interstate. It was then that the Auburn football team, returning from away game, hoisted me onto their shoulders while singing "For he's a jolly good fellow".
Ok, that's a slight exaggeration. But I do feel pretty good and was able to open the trunk with the remote so my wife could load the suit cases.

Dear heart brothers and sisters. I am not one to follow a lot of "movements" nor do I wish to misuse this site. Having said that, I am posting a link that I would ask you to read and decide if it is something you can support. My brother has a rare form of blood cancer. He has been treated at Cleveland Clinic for the past five years with little success. However, they have been using a drug, interferon, and it has helped tremendously. I won't go into all the details here. The problem is that soon it will begin to cost him over nine hundred dollars a month. Please read if you can. Thanks.
https://www.change.org/p/secretary-of-health-and-human-services-protest-high-cancer-drug-prices-so-all-patients-with-cancer-have-access-to-affordable-drugs-to-save-their-lives?recruiter=357340972&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=share_page&utm_term=mob-xs-share_petition-custom_msg&fb_ref=Default
A. Background • Cancer drug prices are increasing at an alarming rate (1), which is causing harm to patients. • Prices have increased more than tenfold (2) between 2000 (average price $5,000-$10,000 per year) and today (average price of new cancer drugs exceeds $120,000 per year). • The average price of cancer drugs is increasing by about $8,500 (3,4) a year. The average household income today for a family of four is $52,000, down 8% from a decade ago (5). • Even patients with insurance have out-of-pocket expenses of 20-25% (6). Since each American has a 1 of 3 lifetime chance of developing cancer, every one of us is at risk of being unable to pay for the prescription medicines that will control and cure our cancer. • This could force many families to decide whether to pay $25,000 a year for one cancer drug, about half the household income, or forgo the treatment to save the money for other necessities. • The high price of cancer drugs is causing harm (7) by shortening the lives of patients who cannot afford the treatment. This is an injustice (8) that creates differential treatment conditioned by financial status. B. Petition We request that our President, the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), and all Members of the United States Congress, consider our petition and protest against high cancer drug prices by implementing the following strategies: 1) Allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices by removing all current legal restrictions. Allow Medicare to have the same right to negotiate drug prices as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs now enjoys; 2) Allow the importation of cancer drugs across U.S. borders, for personal use. Prices in Canada are sometimes close to fifty percent less than what we pay for the exact same cancer drugs in the United States; 3) Enact and sign into law, new federal legislation that prevents drug companies from delaying access to generic drugs (“Pay-for-Delay”) and extending the life of drug patents (Patent “Evergreening”); 4) Create a post FDA drug approval mechanism/organization/group/ concerned parties (that include the strong voice of patients and their advocates) to estimate/propose a fair price for the new treatment, based on its value to patients and health care; 5) Allow organizations such as the PCORI – the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (nonprofit, nongovernmental organization located in Washington, DC. created by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act) to include drug prices in their assessments of the value of drugs and treatments; 6) Request nonprofit organizations that represent cancer specialists and their patients - such as ASCO, ASH, ACS, LLS, and NCCN - develop guidelines to incorporate prices of drugs relative to treatment value. C. Conclusion • In the United States, all cancer patients must have immediate access to affordable prescription drugs in order to save their lives. • We believe the measures as outlined above, will allow market forces to work in favor of lower cancer drug prices. This will provide all cancer patients with equal access to the best treatments now available. • We believe the measures as outlined above, will be fair to both the cancer patient and to pharmaceutical companies. • This is Justice. Jean Raber A few years ago, the problem was with methotrexate, used to treat childhood leukemia, which was no longer being manufactured because drug companies weren't making enough money on it. If I recall correctly, there was last-minute Congressional action on this due to public pressure.
Recently, Namenda, used to treat Alzheimer's, changed its formula slightly to delay its going generic, which jacked up the price.
I'm all for profits that stimulate research, but some of these pricing and scarcity tactics seem pretty shady. Moreover, such tactics could be applied to drugs for many chronic or serious illnesses, including cardiac disease.
So I don't think your info is off-topic. I truly hope your brother gets the care he needs.

John Jones Thanks Jean. The interferon he is using was initially designed to treat hepatitis. Doctors found that a side affect was the lowering of platelets. As time has passed, they have developed new treatments for hepatitus. This means they may phase out the interferon all together. I too am a firm believer in a free market. But it appears that this drug situation is being a little bit manipulated. Right... Surprise surprise. There at least appear to be viable options that are being ignored or intentionally squelched that would continue to provide the needed drugs at a competitive price.

As much as I have whined on here, I feel it is only fitting that I should share the good news. The four weeks post op had been filled with ups and downs. More of the latter. The ups could be measured in hours while the downs were measured in days. Well, I am pleased to report that my last down was Tuesday morning. Since then, I have felt great, good energy, increased stamina and quicker recovery after exertion. I am just a bit reluctant to say this because the down times came on with very little warning. I hope they are over. if not, I am prepared (hopefully) to suffer through them. It amazes me how quickly a crash and burn day comes on with very little warning and how it seems to alleviate almost as quickly. Well, here is to appreciating every good moment and waiting patiently through the bad!

The visiting nurse who monitored my mother at home a couple times a week said that when you're listless, your body is telling you to rest physically AND mentally. You're overloaded in some way, probably with trying to heal physically and from the godawful amount of info they throw at you. Veg out. Stare out the window or sit in a lawn chair outdoors if the weather is comfortable and tell people not to bother you unless you're on fire.

Mary K I had something like that on July 4, the day after my day long journey home from Cleveland Clinic. Went to the ER, they said that it was PVC's (preventricular contractions) as well as bigeminy (two normal beats and then a PVC). They kept me for two days for observation and changed the Toporal to Coreg. The cardiologist advised me that it is not unusual after heart surgery, since the heart is still irritated. He also said that if I had had PVC's before surgery, yes, that I would have them after surgery. Since then, I have had some but not like that day. I have also had a low pulse rate. Next week I will be on a Holter monitor to check everything out. Hope everything works out for you. Can you give your cardiologist a call?

I have been troubled somewhat about how to proceed with what I am about to say. But, once again, God has given me clarity by way of memory.
I came home from the hospital on Friday after successful AVR. I have felt better than I ever thought I would. I have had zero to little pain and that from uncomfortable sleeping positions and motrin has been able to contain that. I can hardly feel my scar. I have to make a conscious effort to not use my upper body for the normal functions because I feel so good. I know that I still have a long recovery period and I know I will probably go stir crazy from being idle. But when I consider the trauma my body has been through, it amazes me that I feel so good.
My reluctance in sharing this news comes from knowing that others are not having such a good recovery and coming across as braggadocios or prematurely enthusiastic.
However, I just got off the phone with a friend and shared with him all of the above, including my hesitation to share on this website. He reminded me that all the glory goes to God. The moment he said that, I recalled the day in May when I was diagnosed. After a brief "jolt" of reality, my very first thought was "how can God get the glory from this" well, this must be how. I wish everyone on this site could have the same recovery and I will pray for that. In the meantime, to God be the glory

Terrie Syvertsen John-Life is lived never quite knowing what is "around the corner". We turn each one hoping to continue on in good faith and with hope for each turn to present the good that is in life. Sometimes that corner we turn puts us faced with obstacles and we move forward hopefully working them out along the way hoping for a good outcome and then to continue on looking forward to the next corner! God only knows why our surgeries present a more difficult road for some during or directly after surgery and it is that great unknown within each one of us that makes it worth it to face each new corner with anticipation of what will come. While it is true for most that we come out of this experience minus the complications of others it is also true that to each of us has come a humbling experience regardless of the outcome. Each uniquely our very own and not one of our experiences should put any of us in a way that when the outcome is good or excellent as to date your case; should there be the need to feel a need to "tone it down" for fear it makes you appear a braggart. John, You are celebrating your entry back home with all of the joy YOU SHOULD BE SHARING and we Heart Brothers and Heart Sisters are drinking in your experience as we do with one another with feelings of prayers being answered and knowledge that this is a possible outcome for each and everyone of us who enter through those surgical doors.
You give us Hope. You extend our Faith in what is to come and the thoughts of what will or should follow. Please continue to share your story knowing it is doing someone out in our community a service. Know that we all hope as you are early on in your recovery that all goes well for you as you continue up the Healing Path. Nancy D Praising God for all the recoveries here-- some are more difficult than others, but sharing the good and the challenges help all of us. Yes, heart valve surgery is more routine now- but that is for those performing them. It is very personal for those of us here- and not a routine life event! All reports of progress are cheered on and prayed for by many of us here, and no one's experience is exactly the same! It shows in the posts here- But, in the long run, most of us make it through and are better off because of this miracle of heart surgery! I am quite humbled to be in this group- we understand this better than anyone who hasn't experienced it. Keep sharing your news....happy to read everyone's progress notes!
Bob M Yes, all the glory goes to God! God bless and rise up! Amen!

Well , here it is almost one week post op. Blood pressure is down. Heart rate haning around 72. If this is as bad as it gets, I am a happy camper. Walked about a 1/2 mile on Friday when I got home. 1 mile total on Saturday. Had my daughter set plants on table outside so I could clean them up. All in all I am good. I hope everyone else does as well. It's a little groggy at first but I notice hour by hour things begin to clear up and a little more fog is lifted. Thanks to everyone for your prayers. I truly believe that is the most important thing going. I am praying for all those headed to surgery this week. Keep your chin up and look to a better future.

Well, here I sit 0730 on the front porch. Everyone else is still asleep. That's good. This has always been my favorite part of the day. When my children were still kids, I was always thankful that they could sleep confortably without fear brcause "dad" had the fort secured :) l always knew though that they were in Gods hands. Now, come Monday, the tables are turned. They will be helping mom take care of dad. A different perspective for sure but I am thankful they are here and prepared. The timing of this surgery could not have been any more precise as my wife and kids' plans were such that they would all be here at this time. There plans were made 6 months ago. It may seem like a coincidence but as my mother would say " it's not odd, it's God". I believe that now more than ever. Well, let's get ready for church. Me, my son and another man share teaching a middle school boys Sunday school class.

Eleanor R You are lucky to have your family with you. it will help your family to understand what they will see in the ICU, so maybe you can prepare them, or the nurse. Lots of machines, lines, tubes, you mostly asleep, breathing tube, etc. I had prepared my adult daughter, and on her own she had looked at some research so that she was not too freaked out. It helps. Best wishes to you, and to them, who have the hardest emotional job, that of waiting and praying. Eleanor

Just got back from Baptist. First, I must say that the staff there was absolutely outstanding. very knowledgeable, courteous, kind and helpful. I am learning that Dr. Kon is a top notch surgeon. I didn't have a lot of time to do research prior to seeing him but had heard good things. Now I will spend a few hours looking deeper into his career just so when some one asks' later on I can pretend I went into this knowing what I was doing. In reality I have been a leaf at the mercy of the wind. Can't let the guard down you know. Kidding. Pulmonary results are very good. I have the lung function a 112 year old whose health is that of someone half his age. Kidding again. Had my anesthesia consulting. That went well. Blood test, chest x-ray and bag of meds. All systems are go for Monday, July 6, 0530.
Since I found out I had this deal, I have taken it one step at a time. Today was the final item on the checklist before the big day. The only time I have dared to speculate has been looking beyond recovery.
Looking forward to spending some good time now with my family these next few days.

Paige Baitinger Your words ring true! Trying to take it one step at a time while going through the never ending checklist while worrying about the caregivers who love us so- I can relate. I read posts, such as yours and I see that many of us go through similar feelings. That makes me feel less alone and frankly- less nuts! I have made lists & gone through pre-op and worried about my family's stress level and done pretty much everything I can around the house to prepare for recovery post-op. My surgical consult in Monday, July 6th. But as Lora posted above -we've got the BIG GUY on our side! :-) You will be so healthy & better than ever after surgery - and how lovely that your kids and family are all with you this weekend!! :-) Embrace the love and know that you have lots of prayers coming to you, your wife and your family.

Getting ready to head to Winston for my Pulmonary evaluation, anesthesiologist consultation and to get my care package. It's getting real now. June has flown by. I've been able to putter around the house more than usual trying to get on top of as much as I can before this weekend. The real countdown starts now. Some big weeks ahead. Some good,I'll be on my way to having energy again. My daughter is on her way home from Pensacola for the upcoming week. My son is finishing his job here tomorrow and heading to Deland Fl. in a few weeks in preparation for school. My wife teaches school so she is off for the summer and will be able to take care of me (she need's prayer more than I do for that reason). Interesting that all these things were already on the agenda before I ever new I would be going through ohs. One more thing along those lines; I would have had my surgery sooner but Dr. Kon was out of town this week. I do believe God has this under control!
And some bad. I'll will be laid up and having to be tended to more than I would like. I am the one who does the tending :)
Well, I know I've rambled so I'll sign off and head down the road.

Terrie Syvertsen Good morning John-It is Terrie from California up early(2:00a.m.) with my husband and lucky for you having a cup of coffee! I read your post and you ended it by mentioning you were rambling! Not so. Just going through an energy change that takes place the closer you get to your surgical date and you are doing excellent! You have an important point in that you know you are looking ahead to your energy level coming back again and that is one of the greatest changes to look forward to! You also have some great Family support which is a big asset to you. As to you having to be laid up and tended to... Not easy to switch from the one normally tending to everyone else to the one who needs the help but this is one of those cases that from the get go you will fill with gratitude for any time spent where someone is there for you so that your comfort level is strong so you can concentrate on getting the proper sleep, food, exercise and company during your healing recovery time who will give your mind and spirit the attention you need!
You are right that God has this under control. You have confidence in your surgeon Dr. Kon and you sound like a Man ready to move on and get on the other side of this surgery. Don't forget about all your Heart Brothers and Sisters here who will also be here with you along your heart journey. Let your wife know we are here for her too. Have a good day John, coffee is gone and I seem to have run out of words....!
