Good evening, I have been on metoprolol succinate since my surgery on August 20, 2019. I believe my local cardiologist wants to start tapering me off this. I noticed my heart rate is avg 50-55 sometimes dipping into high 40s. I'm concerned with long term use and my heart rate being too low. Has anyone taken this and had a low heart rate like that? Also how long did you have to take it?

Carlos Banuelos I took for for 3 months after my surgery in on July 16, 2019. After 2 months I went from 75mg/day to 25mg/day, then went off it altogether after 3 months post op. My cardiologist was fine with me going off it so long as my blood pressure didn’t increase too much. My heart rate is consistently in the 60s at rest without the metropolol. I experienced no side effect while on it - I just would rather be on as few meds as possible. Sounds like your cardiologist wants to take you off it just like mine did. Good luck.

Marie Myers I have been on metoprolol tartrate 12.5 mg twice a day since my surgery 3 years ago.My heart rate runs 55-62. As a 40 year nurse-anesthetist, I’ve seen many, many low heart rates on beta blocker patients over the years, some in the 30’s. If you are feeling faint, especially when you get up, your heart rate may be too low.

Susan Lynn Joe - My surgeon put me on it for three months. Then, my cardiologist had me on a low dose for six additional months. As Marie mentioned, I would get lightheaded upon standing. I switched cardiologists and was immediately taken off as he was unable to see anything in my medical records that indicated a need for continuing the medication. You should definitely ask your doctor about it especially if you're concerned. Good luck!

Catie B I was on it about 3 months and had to be at the low 12.5 mg/day dose because it lowered BP and heart rate--and mine runs on the low side anyway. I'm often in the 50s at rest without metoprolol. I keep some around to use for palpitations but don't take it daily.

Rose Madura I had surgery in May of 2017 and had a lot of problems with Afib/aflutter and was on Metoprolol and Amiodadrone. After about six weeks, I was taken off Amiodadrone and my dosage of Metoprolol was gradually lowered. During this time, my heart rate would venture down in the high 40s and I would feel funny. I ended up on 12.5 mg twice a day of Metoprolol and 5 mg of Amlodipine. This combination seems to do the trick for me. My resting heart rate is currently in the mid 50s and my cardiologist says that's where we want it. I feel fine with this. You may want to call your cardiologist if you are concerned. Believe it or not, your body is still healing. Best wishes and God bless you

Sommer Russell I am on Metoprolol and was hopeful that I would be weaned off of it as well. Man, I feel like one lazy bag of bones on that medicine. Anyone else? My heart likes to throw PVC's and jump up fast if not on it, though. My brilliant PCP did help me get the perfect dose by switching mine from tartrate to ER (extended release) so that I got the same amount throughout the entire day and night. That was a game changer. No more having drastically low HR's at one point in the day and then having high BP at the other end of the day. It really helped me taking the ER.

Hello Brave HWs,
I am wrapping up week 9 of my recovery from aortic valve repair. I feel much stronger each day and almost like I'm back to normal. I've started lifting light weights in cardio rehab which I am excited to get back into. I have noticed improved breathing but know I am not 100% just yet.
I had an echocardiogram in September that detected trace or minimal leaking which was a slightly disappointing but I have no complaints. My surgery was a success because it was severely leaking. I am so blessed to be here and try to thank God for this and all blessings.
Its hard to define or put my finger on it but I don't quite feel as physically confident as I once did. I maybe feel a little fragile when I see my scar or just feel my chest. Maybe this will improve with time or it's just a phase. I've been told maybe I just discovered my own mortality.
Overall my surgery and recovery has been a smooth process. Words cannot capture the gratitude I have to God, my wife, family and you all! I pray to continue to make strides of healing and improvement and support all of you in this journey.

Good morning HWs,
It is day 20 since my AVR. Recovery is going well with a minor bump here and there. I saw my cardiologist here at home and he ordered a CT this week to check for fluid in my chest and a follow-up echocardiogram to check the status of the valve repair later this month. He ordered cardio rehab and said I won't be able to drive for 3 months which seems like a really long time.
Pain management wise I have just been on ibuprofen and tylenol plus lidocaine patches. That all seems to help but I do have a good amount of sternum/incision and neck/back pain. My upper body feels pretty stiff and muscles tight/strained. I've been active going to the store, a concert, family BBQ, walking a mile and half each day etc. I think I may have overdone it some this last weekend because I felt like total crud on Sunday and had a lot of chest pain on my right side and a slightly elevated temp. I also noticed I bead sweat from my back just sitting or standing around which never happened before.
Overall my AVR and recovery experience has been a blessing. I know it will be awhile but I'm looking forward to the day I turn the corner and feel back to normal.

Rose Madura I'm sorry you've had a few bumps in the road. I can definitely relate. As Marie said, your body has been through a major operation. Everyone heals differently so try not to compare yourself to others. You will recover well in your time. Regarding driving, I was told that they worry if you are behind the wheel and have to react quickly with a turn, the pain may be unbearable and you may not be able to react. I was released by my surgeon after 4 weeks but I didn't drive until I had my eyes checked. My eyesight was affected by the Amiodarone (The eye doctor said). I didn't want to take any chances. Take your time in healing. God bless. I really do understand your frustration.

Good evening HWs,
I am post op Day 9 from a aortic valve repair. My experience at the CCF was above expectations. Meeting my surgeon was a pleasant experience. He spent time answering my questions, we made a operating room plan and my family and I felt very confident and comfortable with him. He also visited me in the ICU and step down. My care team in the step down unit was beyond great.
I was discharged 5 days after surgery. The recovery has been rough but each day a little better and stronger. I battled a fever in the step down and was extremely nauseous for a few days. Wednesday I had my chest tube stitches removed and it leaked pretty bad for awhile. To me these are all minor things. I am so blessed and grateful to God the Father Almighty to be on the recovery side!
I am also thankful to all of you that have provided encouragement, education, and prayers! You all truly made a positive impact in my journey!
Today, has been the best day in recovery. I went to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a restaurant and some shops with no issues. I don't feel 100 percent but I'm making progress.

David Moore Hello Joe - So glad to read you are doing so well. David also fought a fever. However the more breathing he did the better he felt and it kept that fever at bay. And yes, we agree with Rob, David felt better week over week. Looking at it day after day could be discouraging in the early weeks. Now we look back to November 12, 2018 and we see just how far God has brought him and all the blessings he received along the way. Which the most important was a greater understanding of how dependent we are on the Almighty and without Him there would have been no hope. May He continue to keep you in His care as you travel this OHS road. - Cheryl

Rob Sparling Joe, first item of business is to pack a positive attitude and a heaping amount of patience. The positivity you live and breathe rolls over and crowds out bad karma. High fives to the team on the way into every procedure, baby! Patience is necessary because at CCF you need (sometimes) to be a “patient patient”. Besides those key things, you absolutely need: chapstick, boxer shorts, pajama pants, long charging cord for devices, your password for MyChart. Walk n comfortable in sweats, running shoes and a comfy T-shirt and sweatshirt and that is what you will walk out in several days later. Be sure to clear your head on the top floor overlooking the city! You are gonna rock this! (BTW, chapstick is for immediately after surgery when coming around in ICU. Your mouth will be the Sahara desert.). ❤️💪

David Moore My husband, David, has the Inspiris Resilia Valve. He was diagnosed with Bi-Cuspid valve with VERY severe aortic stenosis in October 2018. I began researching this forum and saw where many people had already researched this new valve from Edwards. I asked our surgeon about it. He was using the Magna valve but said he would look into it. After two weeks he said his partner had already been using it and had great results so he agreed to use it for David, who is 61. The Inspiris is supposed to be a better choice when expecting TVR in your later years. It also should last longer. Guess we will all see once those 20-25 year limits are reached. David had his surgery in November 2018 and Dr. John Gott at Piedmont Atlanta said the surgery was successful. David has had no issues with the valve. May God bless you and guide you to the solution that gives you peace. This one was ours. - Cheryl

In the meeting with my surgeon today, I asked about the inspiris resilia valve, and he said that my hospital wasn’t buying that one yet, so he didn’t have experience with it, but if it was important to me, he would see about ordering it but was doubtful it would be approved. He said that the Magna has been his valve of choice with outstanding long term results. I had thought, if a valve is out there, it’s an option. There are enough positive results with the Magna, so I’m comfortable with it as a choice, and my surgeon is very skilled, so no worries there. But now I see that there may have been a benefit to exploring the more cutting edge valve surgery hospitals. I’m not going to look back, but that would be my advice for someone starting this journey who wanted all options available.

Joe Tarango Thanks for all the replies! I plan to discuss with my surgeon the day before my surgery. I believe this is his tissue valve of choice since he did the clinical trials for it. Only thing is since it's so new there isn't any long term data to speak to it's reliability, however, hopefully it is an improved and long term great valve.

Joe Tarango Cheryl, thank you for the insight. If I go with a tissue valve, the Inspiris Resilia is the one I'm planning on. We'll see what my surgeon recommends. I have David continue to do well and this new valve lasts him a very long time!

John Lant Hi Joe, It has been almost 13 months since my Aortic valve replacement (Inspiris Resilia Valve) and I feel great. I have healed well and doing things now that I could not do before my heart surgery. I just went for my annual Echo and everything still looks good with my valve and heart. I am happy to have received the Inspiris Resila valve because it was the latest Generation heart valve made to last longer that the previous generation valve. But you should talk to your surgeon about the valve that is right for you. I am very happy with my valve choice as it is just as quiet as my original valve and when or if I ever need another surgery it was designed to accommodate the TAVR valve without going through the major surgery again. If you have anymore questions, please feel free to ask as I will be happy to reply to you. Good luck with your upcoming surgery and it will turn out just fine with very little chest pain and discomfort.

Erik Jensen Hi Joe. I saw your reply to my post where you referenced this valve. Researching it, it looks like a great option both in terms of accommodating a future TAVR as well as the advancements in decreasing calcification (thus increasing longevity). I just sent a note to my surgeon's office at Mayo to see if this one is an option for me. Thanks for tipping me off to it!
Joe Tarango Erik, glad I can help! I hope it's an option for you. Keep us posted on your progress.
