Hi all, it's been awhile since last update post. My surgery was March 28, 31 days in recovery. Doing very well, I can attest to the other OHS veterans that the waiting before surgery was definitely the hardest part. Once surgery was over I shifted focus on recovery and rehab. I've actually enjoyed this part of the journey. Getting better every day and can tell the difference in my strength and endurance improving. I've attached a video of me getting on my rowing machine on day 17, felt great! I've been slowly progressing to my stationary bike as well. Along with continued dog walks and gym workouts. I gotta say the rigid sternal fixation method to close the sternum back is a game changer. Definitely made a difference in my recovery time, very little pain and pretty much normal mobility. For those with upcoming surgery dates check out this method. There's videos on here from Dr. Gerdisch on this topic. Feel free to ask me anything about this.
Cheers

Greetings, going on 16 days in recovery. Doing well and stronger every day. Replaced aortic valve and ascending aorta. Have post surgery check up this morning. One kinda odd thing I experience is I can feel my heart beat pulsating through my ears when I'm in a quiet place. Also feel it in chest and arms but more so the ears. My BP, heart rate, etc are normal. Anyone experience this? How long does it last? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Marie Myers Yes, I still feel a stronger heartbeat after 5 years, like Rose. It is more prominent when lying on my left side, and can “hear” my heartbeat in my ears when wearing earplugs. I am guessing it is due to the higher /more efficient output of circulation with the better valve.

Greetings, got home yesterday from OHS. St. Francis in Indianapolis was the place and Dr. Gerdisch the surgeon. All went really well. The nurses, therapist, etc were all fabulous. Have never been treated with such caring and professional people. I told them the reason I'm here wasn't great but having them take care of me was awesome and memorable in a very good way. Posting a picture from within 24 hours of surgery completion. Incredible the amount of iv bags hanging. Want to provide a synopsis of the later. This morning kind feel like I got hit by a mack truck.

Adam Pick You got this Dan... You are in great hands with Dr. Gerdisch. To help you manage any potential nerves or anxiety you may experience... Here is one of my favorite poems... The poem is called "Come to the Edge".
"Come to the edge," he said. "But, we are afraid," they said.
"Come to the edge," he said. "But, it's so high," they said.
"Come to the edge," he said. "But, we might fall," they said.
Wanted to pass along I've lost the "upcoming surgery schedule" feed on my news feed. I've scrolled down pretty far and don't see it. Ginny Turner Dan, the fear you're experiencing is normal as you approach surgery. Here are a few things that helped me let logic rule over emotion as I waited for mine (I’m now 4 weeks post-surgery and doing great!):
1. My surgeon is very experienced and skilled, as is the team who will care for me. They do this EVERY DAY with great success. Even though it's a big deal for me, it's routine for them.
2. I don't need to worry about the technical aspects or details of the surgery. My job is to go to sleep, then wake up. I can do that.
3. I'm grateful to have a condition that can be taken care of with surgery. Not everyone is so fortunate.
4. Almost every heart patient story I've read says the waiting is the hardest part. The big event will not be nearly as bad as I fear.
5. I immediately flip the switch on anxious thoughts and think of something to move my mind away from the fear - a funny grandchild story, beautiful sunrises on our lake, a new recipe I want to try, a trip we want to take.
6. With my surgery plan in place, I avoid too much reading and research on the subject. I already know what to expect and am prepared.
7. I view the surgery as a key that will open the door to many more good years to come. I'm blessed to be in my mid-70s and in good overall health. But after surgery and recovery, I expect to have more energy and feel even better than before. 80 is the new 60?
7. I start each day with a grateful heart. I have the support of my family and friends, Adam Pick's wonderful site, this caring community, and the teachings of my faith. I feel the good wishes and prayers of others and know I'm not alone.
Dan, I have every confidence that you will do well. We'll all be celebrating your successful surgery and you'll be on the road to recovery soon. Here's to the Class of '22!

Greetings all, this might be a stretch but I'll give it a try.
I'm having surgery March 28 to replace a bicuspid aortic valve and ascending aorta. I have chronic low blood platelets, medical terminology is ITP (thrombocytopenia). I'm usually low in the 60-100 range. Last week I was at 27 for my catherization. Normal is 140-450.
Has anyone that had surgery or facing surgery with low blood platelets? How was this managed before, during, and after surgery?
Thanks very much in advance for any feedback.

Good news, Had cardiac catheterization yesterday, no blockages.
Not so good news, learned I most likely need ascending aorta replaced along with aortic valve replacement. Which means OHS.
I've went from heart murmur, keep an eye on it. To severe aortic stenosis, need replaced soon via TAVR. To due to aorta anatomy should perform mini-sternotony. To enlarged ascending aorta, 4.5cm. might need replaced. To need to replace both valve and ascending aorta via OHS. To left atrial appendage also needs closed off.
All this in a matter of weeks.
I'm usually optimistic on all things, this is definitely wearing on me. I totally trust the doctors but just a lot to take on. I've always been very active, love to do physical stuff. I'm worried how much this will change my life.
Surgery date is March 28, number of weeks to "hurry up and wait".

Janelle Hurst Hey Dan, I saw your question regarding what attracted me to Dr. Gerdisch. I had watched a few of his videos on here, and then read his many patient reviews. I remember noticing that many patients talked about how fast their recovery was, and restrictions seemed minimal, and that is something I really want. I also learned that if Dr. Gerdisch has to do a sternotomy that he uses rigid sternal fixation (plates and screws) instead of wire to hold the sternum together....rigid sternal fixation minimizes restrictions during recovery (like lifting and putting arms above head). During my video consult with him he was very willing to answer any questions I had, I did not feel like he was trying to "sell" himself to me, he came across confident but humble. He did not minimize my concerns about risks, but also emphasized the importance to him of a great outcome and repair. Also, from my research, he is very skilled and very involved in research.
Dan Rhoden Thanks Janelle, this really helps! Good luck to you!
