Bill Cherry I bought an electric lift recliner and have not regretted it one bit. At first I used it to get up and also to sleep so that I would stay flat on my back. After healing for a while, I needed the lift less but really enjoy the power recline, all positions of recline to even flat out with foot rest. Terrie Syvertsen I bought a power lift recliner to avoid making myself go through the problems I would encounter trying to use the bed at first and found that it cost near the same to buy a chair on sale with the lift as to rent one as long as I would probably need it. Mark Alafita Conrad, my aortic valve replacement surgery was on Feb 2, 2015. My tube was kept in for several hours after my surgery, but don't fret too much, since I don't really remember any of the time that passed. A real blur. i'm sure each person is different, but since there were few complications from surgery, it did not have to stay in for long.
As for visiting nurse, I think that depends on the hospital and the insurance. As it relays to my situation, yes, I have a visiting nurser come in a couple days a week for vitals, checking of the incision, and to go over next steps. Very helpful, and I didn't even know this was offered until I was in recovery.
Hope that helps.

Bob M Conrad, my experience with my breathing tube was peaceful. Because of this blog, I told my wife about the breathing tube. In my hospital, they dimmed the lights when they reduced my sedation. When my eyes opened, I saw my wife talking with my nurses. I noticed the breathing tube, and it was working fine and I was fine. Then, the nurse said 3, 2, 1, I turned my head and when the tube was pulled out, I little water came out of my mouth. Then I when back under sedation. I had a nurse visit my house every other day or so to check my vitals. She released me to cardio rehab along with my cardiologist after 3 weeks after surgery.

I had a nurse visit every other day for a week to check my coumidin and vitals. I had a physical therapist visit twice to make sure I could move around well enough, and gave me simple exercises to do.
During my pre-op testing and orientation I spent time with a social worker who asked questions. She wanted to know who was driving me home, who was staying with me, who was preparing my food. She asked if I wanted to go to a rehab center before I went home. My hospital was very concerned with how I would "get by" at home after surgery.

Meredith Bray I'm NOT ashamed to admit I was over-emotional in the weeks leading up to surgery! It's a lot to face, all the unknowns and what-ifs. Everything will be ok. Simply asking questions makes you so much more prepared for post-op. It seems the people that have the most difficulty with the vent tube are those that are not expecting it. Feel free to read my journal if you'd like, and also please ask questions! I relied heavily on this community when I was pre-op, and I'm thrilled to be able to give back!

Mark Alafita Conrad, nothing to be ashamed about! We are/were in the same boat, and I firmly believe I was no different. I cannot stress enough how minimal the tube was to the whole experience. You are so drugged up it is a non-issue. That said, yesterday was my 4-week anniversary on the surgery, and I will admit that my throat still is a bit scratchy. My voice still isn't back to 100%, either. But, since I am not an opera signer, it has had virtually no impact on my daily life enjoyment. I just was unaware that the tube can have that effect so long after the surgery. When I sing in the shower, I avoid the high notes!

I met with Dr Cohn yesterday for about 30 minutes. He was extremely nice confirmed that I did in fact need my aortic valve replaced and that my blockage was in a top artery that was an important one. He said due to my size I would need the large incision which would let him do both the artery and the tissue valve and I wouln't need a blood thinner in the future. I need three more surgeries after this on other body parts. When Dr. Cohn got done he told me he no longer does surgery, rocked again. He recomended that I meet Dr. Sary Aranki who was in surgery at the time. Dr.Cohn said Dr. Aranki was his surgical son. We waited for two hours and met with Dr. Aranki. He said he would use a bovine valve. I asked if he had done many aortic valves to which he said that what he was doing in the morning and he was also doing one in the afternoon. My previous consultation regarding my teeth getting was that no surgery for three weeks after the extraction. These docs said didn't have to wait.

Tom Elliott Conrad, Hi! I haven't checked in lately so I missed your questions re recliner and meditation tapes.
I don't remember the name of the recliner we got - I'll look it up when I get home tonight. We got it at a store called Relax the Back, on sale but still more expensive than I was imagining. It's a powered one, which I don't think I really needed, but that's a nice feature.
What wound up being my go-to meditation audio was by a woman named Belleruth Naparstek at Healthjourneys.com - "Meditations to promote successful surgery." I also downloaded some non-surgically oriented relaxation MP3s from Dartmouth College that I still listen to from time to time.
Update: the recliner is made by Golden Technologies, which is located in Pennsylvania. I didn't do any comparison shopping before I got this, but it's worked out pretty well.

Penny Prichard I've Been lucky enough to see a few open heart surgeries when techniques were on the cutting edge. Picture a beautiful symphony performance with the team the orchestra and the surgeon the conductor. Each musician knows exactly what they are going to do next and knows exactly what the surgeon needs. Any surgery is very beautiful to watch because it's so precise. Although it an emotional roller coaster for the patient , realize that the heart team has done this hundreds of times and you are in good hands. Good luck on your adventure because that's what it is. It's like being scared to go on a roller coaster but once you get off, you say to yourself it wasn't really that bad.
