Peter,
I just read through your journal and it's interesting to read how many different opinions you collected (and got) before your surgery.
I've only gotten opinions from within my cardiology group and Dr Stelzer. I didn't seek any other medical opinions, I just collected my own information on all alternatives and I arrived at the same one you did:
The Ross Procedure is the best way to go.
I'd love to hear about your recovery and how your heart is currently doing now over a year post-op.

Good update brother. I visited Dr. Stelzer last weekend at Mt. Sinai -- was great seeing him and Dr. Varghese. Felt very strange visiting the ICU area and was reminded how special those folks are. Glad you\'re doing well and I\'ll drop you a line next time I\'m in NYC.

Peter,
It sounds like things are going extremely well for you. We have been thinking of you. My wife, Michal, is scheduled for the Ross Procedure with Dr. Stelzer a week from tomorrow, March 27. Please let me know if you have any advice for us or anything that may be helpful to know prior to surgery or any advice for recovery at Mt. Sinai.
Thanks.

Peter Woglom Hi Grant. Thanks for writing. As you already know, Michal will be in good hands with Dr. Stelzer and he also has a very good staff available to answer questions when he's not around.
As for the recovery at Mt. Sinai itself, a couple of things come to mind. When I came out of surgery, what hurt most was my back. I was able to get a recliner in the ICU but it took a few days to get one once I made it to the step-down room. I would begin stumping from the get-go for a recliner because it made all the difference in the world. The beds are pretty uncomfortable and while sitting upright in a chair will be good for her, I found that reclining was the way to go.
Also, as in any hospital, they tell you that you need rest but seem to come in at all hours of the night to take blood, vitals etc. I think I was getting woken up at 3am for blood and I basically said - WTF! My nurse said that I could tell them earlier in the day that I'd like blood taken around 12am when they did an earlier round for vitals which was helpful because uninterrupted sleep is not easy to come by.
Whether it's for you or Michal, the food served in the room isn't great but there are some pretty good options in the neighborhood. If you need any suggestions on that front, just let me know.
If you or Michal are interested, I can give you the play-by-play in terms of what she'll be doing up until she's carted into the operating room. Nothing terribly exciting but if she wants to know what to expect, just let me know.

Great update. Glad everythjng looks good. Love the bit of humor you always throw in. The sleep issue is one I had too, but like I said before, I was getting up a lot rather than getting up and not being able to fall asleep again. Hope is goes away soon. Maybe try some 5-HTTP, valerian root or something like that. Good luck.

Hi Peter,
Glad things are going well. We all went thru the \"tired of sleeping on m back routine\". And yes, getting up and down is difficult at first. As you can see progress is being made. In another month, you will look back in disbelief at how far you have come. Please update us after your appts on the 18th. Today is my one year anniversary. As I write this, a year go this very moment I was in surgery. Amazing! Say hi to Stelzer for me please.

hi Peter
those night sweats are the worst, I would soak the whole side of our bed. It gets better with time, but i still ocasionally get them yet four years after surgery. The only time I get warm in Minnesota is on a hot summer day when it hits 85 degrees and high humidity. I still look foreword to a nice hot summer day. My fingers get so cold they dont\' activate my smart phone. I think the beta blocker does it. We just had four grandchildren for a week ages one to five. I can\'t imagine trying to help care for triplets with an eight pound weight limitation. I hope you have some good friends and neighbors that can help your wife out. my first walk to the end of the dr
iveway and back ( a quarter mile) required a three hour nap. It takes a lot of rest to heal up after this one.
good luck and lots of prayers,

Hey Peter,
I had some of that too. More night sweats than anything and that was mostly in the hospital and hotel after I left hospital. I think it was from Percoset. I found this for you on the Internet:
Hot Flashes: As your body goes through changes after surgery, you may experience hot and cold flashes. These hot and cold flashes are due to the body’s internal thermostat trying to regulate itself. During these periods, it is best to control your hot and cold flashes by adding or removing blankets rather than adjusting your room temperature.
Jeff

Hey Buddy,
Yup, I know I had the chills -- actually \"night sweats\" if there is such a thing. While laying on my back my chest and front of my body was freezing and my back was sweating!? Truly bizarre sensation. I would go through 3 or 4 shirts a night because they were wet with sweat. They basically goofed up our temperature gauges but it all gets sorted out in a month or so. I also had flu-like symptoms with my chills (achy, headaches, etc..)
You\'re almost in the clear Peter! We\'re all very proud of you bro.
Big Hugs,
