Hi Patricia. Thank you for responding to my post. I'm also from Georgia, now living on Okaloosa Island, near Destin, Florida. I'm having surgery on July 30th with Dr. Roselli. I talk to him the day before surgery, but I met with Dr. Xu in May. I had my first AVR in Orlando with Dr. Kevin Accola, who I was able to find through HVS. The valve would be 8 years old in October. I saw the story of Dr. Roselli and his friend Ari on HVS. I thought that is the outcome I would would like to have for my second surgery. My biggest fear is being put on the heart lung machine for a second time. I'm also hoping for Rigid Sternal Fixation, which I think helps with recovery. So many questions. Was your husband able to stay in your room? Mine was able to stay in Orlando, which was a great help to both me and the nurses. Airline tickets are done and Delta is aware that the return may very well change. Wheelchair assistance has been requested. I'm not sure how to advise the hotel on the length of stay. So sorry for rattling on.
Congratulations Patricia! Wishing you continued success with your recovery!

Patricia Miller Thank you for your message Jack. Each week is a little better than the previous wk. I am 9 1/2 wks post and returned to work today. In office so did fine. So far my sternotomy recovery has been generally smoother than my robotic mitral valve repair. Don't want to jinx myself though!

Hi Patricia. It sounds like your surgery went very well. i know that you got several opinions before going to CC. I am from GA as well but have lived in Asheville for a number of years. We have an excellent cardiac surgery reputation here and going to CC would be hard for me. Did you get second opinions at Duke or any other hospital in our general area? I hope your recovery is smooth!!

Patricia Miller Barbara- I had my initial consult at my home hospital Emory University. Sent my records to Mayo in Rochester and CC. Got an extra opinion at the other Piedmont hospital in Atlanta. It was stressful getting different measurements of my aortic root and different recommendations. But I had clarity after the last consult. Aortic roots are challenging to measure. I knew I needed to be at a high volume aorta surgery center especially since I was considered a "redo" (second OHS). It is definitely a little more challenging to do surgery out of state but it's definitely doable. If you meet w/ a second surgeon you will likely find clarity on the best steps for your case. You are going to do well!

Barbara deLoache For you all the went to CC from out of town… will they use the cardiac cath & CT done at another center or do you have to do them again? I would have to pay my way & also a friend’s ticket plus hotel rooms. This seems very costly!! ( if I can get someone to go with me)

Anna Ma Barbara, I am not going to CC. I will go to NY Presbyterian. I just watched their patient education videos, they said the tests need to be within a month. I’m not sure if that is the same standard for CC. I will have my cath the day before my surgery and stay in hospital overnight before my surgery. I kind of like how they arranged it this way.

Hi Patricia
Doctor Roselli performed an aortic valve replacement as well as my aorta, up to the aortic arch, plus a single bypass, via sternotomy in October, 2021. I flew in from Atlanta on October 25, stayed at the Intercontinental Conference Center Hotel, connected to the hospital (I highly recommend that), the Cleveland Clinic Medical Concierge recommended a driver to and from the airport, his name is Mustapha, he's excellent. I had numerous tests on October 27, including a cardiac catheterization, which showed a 90% blockage, and I was out running at Kennesaw Mountain on the trails the week prior. No symptoms whatsoever. The cath surgeon called it a "widow maker" blockage. I was in the right place at exactly the right time. The open-heart procedure was October 28, afterwards I was in cardiac ICU, then moved to a step-down unit on November 2 (I think. My memory is a bit rough of that time period), then flew back to Atlanta on November 8. The most difficult parts were the drainage tubes, they're very uncomfortable, and the wheelchair ride to the car from the gate in Atlanta was brutal, I think he hit every bump. Other than that, it was a breeze. Dr. Roselli is really the best in the world. And the food is excellent. Good luck!

Patricia Miller James- Thank you for your message above. Remarkable story. Kennesaw Mountain trails are quite rigorous! Glad you are doing so well. Really helpful information above as well as your "my story" summary. We stayed at the connecting Intercontinental Hotel one night when I was there the end of December for consults, tests, and lab work. (I was very impressed w/ everyone I met and the organization of my schedule) The hotel was really nice and convenient, but I ended up reserving a suite at the nearby Residence Inn for my surgery stay, since it had a little more space for my husband and daughters. I might add a couple more days to our reservation based on yours and others experience. Thank you again for sharing your experience that you had there.

Hi Patricia, On Monday, I was lucky to be in Houston for the National College Football Championship game. My Michigan Wolverines were taking on the Washington Huskies.
As you may know, Dr. Eric Roselli (your surgeon) and I became friends at the University of Michigan in the 1990s. Just a few minutes before going to the tailgate, I saw your new post about your upcoming valve-sparing aortic root replacement surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. So, at the tailgate, I read your post to Dr. Roselli.
I want you to know that Dr. Roselli and his entire team at the Cleveland Clinic are ready to provide you the best possible care. If you have any questions about travel to or from the Cleveland Clinic, please give Dr. Roselli's office a call at (866) 306-5846. Dr. Roselli's team is there for you.
My thoughts are with you. You are in the best of hands. The valve-sparing aortic root replacement procedure is one of Dr. Roselli's specialties as you may have seen in our recent videos featuring Dr. Roselli. If you need anything, please let me know!

Patricia Miller Adam- Thank you for your kind post. Peace of mind going forward means everything. I am far more prepared for this surgery because of what I have learned from this community and the wealth of information on this site. (discovered HeartValveSurgery.com several months after my first OHS). I plan to re read your book this weekend. Much to gain from it.
btw. Great picture of you and Dr. Roselli at your tailgate. A great win for Michigan! I did choose the Wolverines in our family/friends football pool.

Sorry to hear Patricia that you have to undergo a second procedure. I am scheduled to visit CCF and for surgery on December 21 for ascending aortic aneurysm with aortic valve replacement. If all goes well, I can share my experience and also logistics with you. We are doing AirBNB close to the hospital. All the best to you!
Patricia Miller Sandeep- I hope your surgery goes smoothly. Waiting is the hardest part.
Kyle Griffin posted a note for Patricia that says:

Patricia Miller My aortic root was <5.0 at the time of my MVR. Long story there. Apparently, some aortic root aneurysms can stay stable for a long time and some change. I am diligent at doing what I can to keep b/p down. The measurements I've received have been 5.2-5.6 cm. Most of my dilation is in the non coronary cusp area. My understanding is there can be variation in measurements. I did cardio genetics, which were essentially normal. If anyone needs a genetic counselor in GA, I would happily recommend the one I saw.
