Thanks for your response, Mary, to me suggesting asking the anesthesiologist for a smaller breathing tube since I'm a singer. I wouldn't have known I could do that without your help. I had my pre-op appointment Thursday and he agreed!

Mary K They are for reducing scars:
"ScarAway™ helps restore raised and discolored scars to a more natural color and texture, using the same technology trusted by burn centers and plastic surgeons. Using ScarAway on newly healed wounds helps prevent the formation of unsightly scars. Even scars that are years old from burns, surgical procedures and injuries show significant improvement with ScarAway. "

Mary: Through all of this, remember that we can be fixed. So many people would trade places with us if only they could. If life is going to throw something at me (and it appears that it has), I'd rather it be this than a lot of other things that are lurking out there. Besides, "this is really routine these days !!"

Lora Lee Peterson I started telling myself something along this order last week, and you can't believe how peaceful I am now. I am lucky to be getting this valve! Back in the day, they didn't have these, and I'm sure people passed away young, with no explanation. I'm glad this finally took root in my mind, because worrying all the time about something I have no control over is so unproductive.

Mary K The only "routine" surgery is to someone not having it. Could it be worse, oh yeah. Much, much worse. Cancer, transplants, amputation. Lots of worse things. I met a young girl at the Cleveland Clinic who had had half of her brain removed because of cancer. Horrific. But she was delightful.
Different people process in different ways. Some approach a problem very analytically, with a "fix it" mindset. Others work it through on a more emotional level. Sometimes denial of one's emotions is helpful such as in an emergency situation, but if one is the type of person who needs to "feel things through", the that is the healthiest course for them, especially after having done that emotional work, unresolved issues do not linger and fester. Congratulations to all those who can just always "let go and let God". Like Annie Lamott, I have a strong faith, but sometimes if someone's says that or something similar, I want to smack them.
Life is not all rosy with lots of exclamation points. Sometimes it is messy, dirty and seemingly unfair. Sometimes the best thing that I can do when I see someone suffering is just to find some empathy to be with them in the suffering , God willing, so that they can move through the suffering, still whole.
