Hi, read your last note. I also went to Sinai NYC for MV repair. First off, the research clearly shows the MV repair is preferable over a replacement. Dr Adams, i bet, also told you such. The repair is harder to do. So perhaps surgeons in your country have lower successful outcomes because of such?! Regarding some of your other concerns, which i totally get, the vent tube is only in for hours after your surgery, at-least for most. Most of us do not have a clear memory of it, but some do. The pain is quite well managed by medications and astonishingly will likely be the least of your concerns, especially after the first two days. The tubes, yes, are annoying, but you get used to navigating. The extreme fatigue is a big, big deal, as well as having to sleep on your back for weeks. So be creative with those pillows to ease this discomfort. Some of us found the use of the reclining chair in the hospital and at home helpful in this regard. Eat a lot of protein (heme, from meat) before the surgery to get your hemoglobin up. A major reason for your extreme exhaustion will be low hemoglobin. Hope this info is helpful. Godspeed.

Richard Munson That deena, knows her stuff. Shadow says go deena. If you are a mother, happy mothers day. If not, have a good day anyway. We had our mothers day on saturday. Nancy, michelle and elaine, all mothers. Nancy got treated to a non cooking day. Pizzas all around. Shadow got to see his cousin luna but his other cousin callie has been banned. A bully.
Deena Z Lol. Thank you, Richard. Pizza never fails to please! Hope Shadow had a bite too.
Richard Munson No pizza for shadow. He does love his dr. Marty dog food however. He lives large.

Hi Markos, I think that the expertise and skillful of the surgeons team is determining for a good result. And this depends on the number of surgeries that carry out every year, which is about 5o surgeries for replacement or repair, of which at least 25 must be of valve repairing. I see that there are quite a number of surgeons with such skillful in USA. Anyway, in my opinion it is also important the good judgement of the surgeon everywhere you are in order to opt for replacement in case of not feeling sure of the result of repairing the valve at the very moment of surgery, with the heart under the view.

So glad you found this website before your surgery. Your mitral valve issue sounds like mine was. Anterior (most are posterior) with A3 flail and ruptured chords. I was shocked when I found out I had to have surgery quickly. It was good though, because I didnt have a lot of time to think about it and worry before hand. I had to get all my business stuff in order (accountant and it was tax season! ) I found this site a few weeks after my surgery. Everyone is so helpful and it is such a great wealth of information. If you have any questions, just ask. Best of luck!!

Hi Markos,
I posted on your recent journal entry and then read your recent update re: Sinai. I read that you are waiting on Mt Sinai for a out-of-the-country cost estimate. I had my fairly complex mitral valve repair there (7 out of 10 difficulty) was what Dr. Adams estimated and then after the surgery said it was even more difficult. All went really, really well. The difficulty was due to my severe MAC (calcification) and also my TV ended-up being repaired.
Dr. Adams, as you probably are already aware, does perform international heart surgeries for free for lower income people. I think quite a few are children. So I would think that he would have some sympathy for how expensive this surgery is for those whose insurance carrier may not pay to the fullest or does not apply, whatever your case. As you go along, if you have any questions, feel free to ask. I can tell you that Mt Sinai took total control of my insurance coverage issues and I never made a call to deal with the cost, etc. In the meantime, Godspeed.

Thinking of you Markos - everyone’s heart surgery is an individual journey but this community offers much loving support. The Gold Standard is to repair the mitral valve if they can. I had open heart surgery October 2024 & my surgeon was prepared either way- he said once they get in there sometimes they have to approach it differently. I was lucky to have a full repair to my mitral valve.
Have a surgeon who is well experienced in doing mitral valve surgery! Have a surgeon you feel confident with! Then you put it in his or her hands. Wishing you blessings on your journey.
Markos Barrios Thanks for taking time and your blessings, . Which type of mitral valve injury did you have?
