Leslie, welcome to the heart valve surgery support family. I call us a family because we all have heart valve issues in common and support one another through the journey of cardiology appointments, tests, surgery and recovery. We are here for you. Ask any questions.
Last Summer I was 54 years old and had full sternum surgery for mitral valve repair. The main thing I learned is that while the process of open heart surgery takes the same course for everyone, we are all unique physically and may expoand respond differently to pain, surgery itself, and the rate in which we heal.
My pain was off the chart the first 8 hours, but the ICU RN was quick to get additional medication prescribed by my surgeon. The pain persisted at a lessor intensity throughout my 11 day hospital stay. I was in ICU 2 days, but most are there overnight. I was in the hospital 11 days, while most ate discharged on day 3-4. I call myself an outlier. Just be honest with your medical caregivers and do what they tell you. They will help you.
When you get home take it one day at a time. I felt pretty good at 6 weeks. Started cardiac rehab at week 9. Cardiac rehab is so important. Don’t overlook it. I made great strides in one month.
I’ll be praying for you, your surgery and your husband whom you care for.

leslie terjesen Thank you so much, Louanna. I am going for my pre-admission testing tomorrow; only hope it's a little warmer outside. I am going to call NY Prebyterian in a few to see if I come in early, can I give a pint of blood. I called last week and they said there are forms that need to be filled out ahead of time. Maybe they can email, we'll see. Otherwise I need to take a bus to NYC and then a cab up to the hospital although I have friends that said they'd come with me. Everyone has been so helpful, informative and kind. Thanks.

leslie terjesen Went for pre-admission testing yesterday up at NY Presbyterian. Fifteen minutes just to make a left hand turn into the hospital!!! Hopefully everything is done and set for surgery on 2/19. My husband has Parkinson's, his onset in his 50's so my daughter has been driving us as I have no intention of every driving in New York City. And the hospital is all of 2 blocks from the GW Bridge. My daughter and I were laughing and thankful that neither of us had ever had to commute to the city! I felt pretty good after, once again, meeting with the nurse practitioner, Dana, and just look forward to getting this done with. I truly appreciate all the support on this site.

leslie terjesen Give yourself time to get there. Not sure where you live but it takes time to get on the GW Bridge, lower level is easier to get to Columbia. Just turning on to the Street that the hospital is on takes time as lots of traffic in front of the hospital. Valet parking is great and takes very little time to get your car back. The first time we were there, the police officer had no idea where cardiac surgery is, it's on the 7th floor. Make sure you have picture ID with you; it's like going through the airport!!! Everyone could not be nicer there. Good luck.

Hi Leslie, welcome to the site! I had aortic valve replacement surgery about 5 years ago, feel free to read through my journal if you'd like. I had a bicuspid valve, and now I have a mechanical valve and take warfarin every day. My life has only gotten better since surgery.
What questions do you have?

leslie terjesen Thank you, Meredith. I'm quite sure I am having a bovine valve which I am happier with as I am the bleeder of bleeders. I was glad when I had my cardiac catch I have no blockages anywhere, just an aortic valve issue so I can ditch the baby aspirin. What a difference, if I get a knick, I don't bleed non-stop. Since I have zero symptoms, I am concerned about the pain afterwards and the recovery although I know it needs to get done and getting it done while I am still so healthy, I think it will be better (I hope). I get a little confused on this website; I assume that when I post in my journal it gets posted on the community site. Everyone has been so helpful, kind and happy to be part of this group!

Meredith Bray I'm sure you'll be happy with the bovine valve. It's a very personal decision to make. The pain and recovery after won't be as awful as you imagine - at least mine wasn't. The most difficult part for me was getting in/out of bed. I needed help for that for about 10 days after I got home.
Yes, when you write in your journal or on someone's guestbook, it is posted in the news feed in the community. If you would like to ask me questions privately, I can share my email address with you. Let me know.
