I am traveling out of town for my surgery and am very nervous about being alone. I have been asking for prayers to help me with my fear of staying at the hospital without my husband. I had some major complications (3 blood clots) after a simple Surgery for my gall bladder in 2016. I was wondering if you waited till you checked in to contact the chaplain? I thought they might be able to help me if I was anxious during the night.

Patsy Stewart Hello, Cameron. I had noticed on my hospital papers where it stated that I didn’t want to see the chaplain. I had actually wondered why nobody had dropped by my room, so the day before my surgery in November, I told the lady who was filling out my paperwork that I wanted that changed and that I wanted the chaplain to come pray with me. A chaplain came in and talked with me before I left for home that day. The morning of my surgery, he came into my room and prayed with me. It was a welcomed and much appreciated relief for me. Since before the pandemic had started, I was unable to attend church. I hadn’t had physical contact with anyone and it was very hard going into surgery without contact from my church family....just to actually hear someone calling my name out in prayer. At the hospital that I was in, the chaplain is the person who checks in with your family to keep them updated on how your surgery is going. Since I asked for the chaplain, one either came in to visit or called my room each day that I was in the hospital. They also provided me with a phone number to contact them if I needed them. I would suggest calling your hospital and asking about the chaplain or spiritual services that are offered for the patients. I pray that you will have comfort and peace going into your surgery. Know that I will say your name when I pray.

Kimberly Goodloe Kathleen,
I will pray for you, your husband, family and his medical team. Friendly reminder(s) ; please reach out to your husband's medical team ; prior to surgery re; any questions or concerns about the procedure . Also seek support from the patient advocate ( if one is available ) at the hospital, contact your family, friends, neighbors etc.. prior to the surgery. I established a great support team for my husband and children ( a couple of days before my first surgery): it made all the difference in the world. Sharing words of encouragement; Keep hoping, believing, trusting and never lose hope.

Kimberly Goodloe Hi Kathleen. I recently celebrated my 12 year heart valve anniversary. A couple of day before my surgery: my husband and I met with my surgeon and medical team. We shared our concerns re: the procedure and my medical team provided the answers to our questions. After my surgery: the journey began. One important part of my recovery : to follow my doctor's advice. I suggest create a journal: write down any concerns you or your husband may have and share with your husband's medical team. I also reached out to my family, neighbors, friends and church community ; prior to my first surgery and it made all the difference in the world. Knowledge is power and developing a relationship with your husband's medical team: is part of of the healing process. I hope you find the information helpful; if you have any additional questions: please send a message to theheartadvocate@comcast.net. I wish you, your husband, and family all the best

Hi, Kimberly! I just read your journal entry. I had my aortic valve replaced on July 13th....then heart block and got a pacemaker on July 22nd.
I feel like I'm not moving as fast as I should in recovery but I also know it takes time.
Of, course the pacemaker was a big surprise and something I'm dealing with mentally and emotionally right now.
If you have any words of wisdom for me right now, I would appreciate it.....recovering from both surgeries, balancing resting and walking, etc
Thanks! Glad you're doing well!

It was a shock for me as well to get an unexpected pacemaker a few wks after OHS. I wasn't ready for that.
There is no normal recovery time. It's not a race. It took me months to get any energy back. Allow yourself time and don't compare yrself with others. You are singular and your recovery is yr own.

Hi Kimberly, I just read your post. Your writing is inspirational. I admire you for your emotional and spiritual strength. Yes, Faith can be very powerful (notice the capital "F"). And, the pictures are absolutely beautiful. As I was looking at them, I felt a certain calm (I'm from NY and the pace here can get to be hectic). Continue healing....I wish you all good things. Be strong and keep writing.
Kimberly Goodloe Thanks Fay. God bless you and your family today and always.

Hi Kimberly,my name is Sara I live a little north of Atlanta.I'm glad to hear you are doing well.I was diagnosed about 2 years ago with mitral, tricuspid regurgitation.since then they have added the aortic.I have been to 3 cardiologist. They all say I just need to exercise more.If I had the energy and could breath ok That would be great.
I stay so tired and feel like I can't get enough air.Everytime I go to Dr. He puts me on a different med.The one I take now causes my bp and heart rate to drop too low.I can't understand why they will not just fix the problem, then maybe I could have a chance of a normal life again.
