Kimberly Eisenhut Ruth joy, thank you for this today, I really needed it. My daughter will be taking on my business with my son while I am not able to stamp my orders for my Etsy shop. Hammering out every letter is not something I will be able to do for quite a while I am guessing. I am right handed too and getting the incision on the right side for the mini thoracotomy. Hope I heal quickly and can stamp by Christmas rush!

Kimberly Eisenhut Aw Richard, I love your name for your car! "Golden Girl" :) I hope you have nice weather tomorrow for the show Just booked a hotel next to Northwestern for my daughter and youngest son to stay for the night before and night of my surgery so they do not have to drive back and forth too much. They will come out when I get to step down and in regular room sometime during the week after surgery also. I will miss them like crazy though Crazy expensive for hotels anywhere near Northwestern because it is on the Magnificent Mile in Chicago, parking is crazy too. I just want to see them before I go into surgery so decided it is worth the expense. My beautiful daughter will be holding down my Etsy shop while I am away, so I am very grateful for that, as putting a shop on "vacation" really brings down sales.

Richard Munson My blood related daughter was rushed to hospital today after bee sting incident which she is apparently very allergic to. Took her sweet time about going which has me crazy but she is 3 hours away. She never replaced her epipen after last one. Had her on iv benedril. Sounds better on phone. She is 55, one might think a little common sense is too much to ask. We had a rather tense conversation. I need the blood pressure spike of a worried dad. Lord give me strength.

Kimberly Eisenhut Thank you all for your support. Richard, I am sorry your daughter had to go through that, sounds like something my daughter would do also! Never thinks ahead about things until I get the phone call when it becomes a crisis! Then I have to deal with the "blood pressure spike"! Yes, it truly never ends when you have kids. When I was talking to my, (will be 80 years old tomorrow), mother yesterday, I started crying because she insists on being with me the entire time I am in hospital and I worry about her health and the stress of being there all day every day. I had to help her with the stupid MyChart stuff over the phone too because the Dr never called in her prescription when she was in ER last week and she could not get ahold of anyone at Dr office, always recordings and a million prompts that just annoy her to death. I am glad I set it up so I can get into her MyChart as well and I walked her through it so she knows how to send a message to her DR office through MyChart and she got it refilled next day. I told her, unfortunately, this is just how it is now. Terrible way to run things when someone is sick, does not know how to navigate the computer/apps easily and just makes having chronic illness so much harder than it has to be. She is better now, but I told her to never leave a hospital or ER without proof any prescription or orders have been sent. I will not be leaving after my stay until everything has been sent to my pharmacy and I know they have it for us to pick up on the way home, or I am given it from hospital pharmacy. I also worry about how she will take it seeing me in ICU, as when my little sister, at 13, passed away from sudden brain stem aneurysm, it just crushed her for the two weeks she was on life support. I was only 18 and it has scarred me for life also about any health conditions. My older sister also will probably have a hard time with this, but not as much as my mom. I will have to be strong and try to smile and possibly make a joke before going in. Richard, can you think of any good jokes for me when I am going in to surgery?
Wishing you well, knowing your fate is coming soon.

Not only will you walk 4 miles after surgery but you will do it regularly, and with ease. Too bad we live so far apart or i would proudly join you. I can see the headline, hvs step dad and hvs step daughter join forces and walk for heart health. There was an animated tale on t.v years ago with a voice over by fred astaire and micky rooney and it was santa claus is coming to town. My kids loved it. There was a song and to paraphrase the opening line “ put one foot in front of the other, and soon you’ll be walking out the door”.

Not to sound like a hvs step dad but mrsa is very contagious so you should be careful where you go before your surgery. I was lucky in a way before my hvs as it was in the middle of covid scare. Stayed in the house mostly. I hate to preach as my kids call it especially after tripping on a concealed root in my yard this week dragging a hose. I fell against a tree which had rough bark. My arm looks like hamburg where the skin was peeled off. It may have ruined my tattoo that i got at 16. I will no doubt have a nasty scar. I will say it was forearm entry heart surgery. Over 80 has its pitfalls. No pun intended.

Kimberly Eisenhut Ruth, yes, I finally locked it in, but I am so very nervous and anxious about everything. Not sure how I will get through the next month and this whole thing. I am also moving this weekend, so very stressed at the moment. No sleep doesnt help either. I am grateful to have the option to fix this, but as always it comes with so much anxiety and worry. If anyone has any advice on what they did to alleviate it would be much appreciated. I do not want to have my son see me so anxious either. Id like to be more confident and enjoy every day instead of just ruminating over this. Being sleep deprived certainly does make it so much harder to cope, but none of my Drs will give me anything to help with sleep. They all just say to take Melatonin, which I have tried and really does not work for me.

I will let you know how he does, at the time of the surgery he will be just 3 months shy of his 55th birthday to the day. We were relieved to hear it won't be a full open-heart. When we talked with the doc it still sounded pretty extensive with a pretty long recovery(off work for 3 mos.). Sounds hopeful though that maybe it won't be so terrible from some of the comments below. Good luck with your upcoming surgery as well.

Hi, Kimberly. I had a mini thoracotomy in 2010. I had OHS to replace my aortic valve. If getting a full sternum cut is worse than the mini, I cannot IMAGINE what that would be like! I found OHS to be very tough. I was in the best physical shape of my life, yet it took me many months (9) to feel back to normal. But my scar now is completely invisible, and I have had 15 years from my pig valve....a decent lifespan for a pig. Next up I will be receiving a TAVR, so no more OHS. My advice is to get the mini procedure if it is available to you. I do believe your recovery will be a bit easier. Just my opinion. GOOD LUCK!

Hi Kim, I had my mitral valve repair done minimally invasive when I was 70 years old (Jan, 2022). Spent 2 nights in the hospital post surgery, was walking 2 miles per day after 1 1/2 weeks. Within 3 weeks I couldn't tell I had open heart surgery. I had my surgery at NYU-Langone in New York City. Currently speed walk 4.5 miles daily @ about a 16 min pace, lift weights at the gym 5 days per week. Good Luck!!

Hi Kim, I am Anne from London UK. I am 67 on 18/8/25. I had full thoracotomy and Aortic Valve replacement in March 2024, my valve was so calcified I was on heart/ lung bypass for over 2 hours! My kidneys did not like the operation one bit, but my team were brilliant and I made a full, speedy recovery. The operation was not as bad as I thought I only needed Paracetamol as pain relief no morphine and I was walking up to a mile a day the day after discharge! I came to the USA in August 2024, and I am here now in Orlando with my family and 9 year old grandson living my best life and fitter than I have ever been! My surgeon and team saved my life literally, and thank you will never be enough! I wish you all the best for your surgery and a speedy Recovery xxxx My Team: Mr Neil Robert’s Cardio thoracic Surgeon based at St. Bartholomew's Cardiac Centre,London,England.

Hi Kim. I had a mini-thoracotomy in February 2017. Dr. Doug Johnston at Cleveland Clinic was my surgeon. I was delighted with the outcome. I live in NC, the travel (we drove) home was easy. I was able to start cardiac rehab in just 3 weeks. It was delayed a bit due to a bout of afib and a short hospital stay. Overall, I would absolutely encourage you to go with a mini - thoracotomy. Of course Dr. Johnston is a rock star!!! If you have specific questions I would be happy to chat with you. ❣️

I had thoracic surgery done on my mitral valve 6 years ago I am doing well so far I was scared at first but came to the realization that I had to get it done I did not even know I had a bad mitral valve they call it severe regurgitation my my thoracic surgeon Dr Carmacie was able to do a repair on my mitral valve rather than giving me a bile valve or mechanical valve I dodge that bullet . Otherwise I wouldn't have to be on blood thinners for the rest of my life I'm glad he was able to do the repair of my mitral valve with an angioplasty ring around my valve to give it extra strength . Good luck on your heart surgery .

Hi Kimberly,
I had a mini thoracotomy five years ago & recovery was very easy. I only had a 2”incision & used a silicone bandage while it healed. I’m in Canada & I stayed in hospital for 4 days, then was up and around the following week. They used a small titanium disc to secure the rib afterwards…it does cause the airline scanners to beep! Otherwise, I wouldn’t know it’s there :) Good luck with your procedure 💕

Hi Kim - I'm over in the UK and had a right sided mini thoracotomy for a severe mitral valve regurgitation. I also had a Maze procedure at the same time for AF. It is absolutely a game changer in cardiac surgery - recovery is so quick, I had no pain, the wound healed brilliantly and I would recommend it to anyone. I was terrified at the prospect - really terrified - but it was all absolutely fine and 4 years on everything is going great. I was just amazed at the skill of the surgeon who did it! Please please please try not to worry too much - easy to say I know - but if I had to do it again, I would choose exactly the same. Sending you all the very best wishes I can from over here in the UK - you can do this and you absolutely will. You Go Girl!!
