Julie - my best wishes for your upcoming surgery. I had mine on July 28 and - if everything goes well - you will have your energy back in no time and you feel very quickly how much better your heart functions. I also went for a mechanical valve and have no problem with it - also with the anticoagulation.

Hi Julie....your story sounds very similar to mine. In my case I will also be scheduled for an AVR and my surgeon will also replace my aorta. Yes all of this as a result of a bicuspid valve, the nearly unrecognizable heart murmur I've have all my life. I think its not so easy for me to accept the diagnosis as I feel fine, maybe a tiny bit of energy loss but I've been mostly living a quiet life for about 10 months, I suppose it will be nice to climb mountain again, ride my bike and not wonder. I was also curious to learn you had selected the mechanical valve...I've still not totally decided but the mechanical option has been my first thought even with the blood thinner.
