John, this is Ruth's daughter Christine. You are in my prayers for your big day tomorrow. My mom just had the same thing you will have, aortic valve replacement and aortic root replacement. Surgery was only 3.5 to 4 hours. She is doing good so far. It's been 6 hours. Fear not for the Lord is with you!!
Enrique K Hi Christine, thanks for the update. I will send lots of prayers for your mom.

Hi John,
I just read your story. Im 47 years old and I underwent mitral valve repair. Today marks a wk since my surgery 9/11. My advised is to always be positive and believe in your doctor and yourself. I know you have more problems than me but nothing that can't be fixed. I was walking day # 2, discharged from the hospital after 4 days and on the street for a short walk around BJ's on day #5. Believe me! you will do well. Have a blessed day.

John Schutte Thanks very much Popeye. I appreciate the support. Looking forward to getting on the other side of surgery and joining the zipper club. You, and so many others on this website, are a source of strength and inspiration.

Hi John,
Hang in there buddy! I'm also hoping for the repair option, but fear my bicuspid valve is beyond repair. May need to have the puppy completely replaced. I have my first meeting with the surgeon on Tuesday, so we'll see. Although you're much further along the process than I am, I have a feeling I'll be "getting my zipper" in October or November as I am symptomatic and suffering moderate heart failure as a result of my backflow.
Try to think positively and keep your anxiety in check. Sounds like you have a great support system and are going to a great place to have the procedure done.
I will be sure to keep you in my thoughts and prayers!

Thanks very much for the encouragement. I hope your visit with Dr. Stelzer goes well today. I initially considered the Ross procedure as well, but was concerned with the way this may complicate future re-operations. Like you, I'm healthy and active, and news of my condition came as a total shock last January. It took me a few months to wrap my head around things, with plenty of time spent reading medical journals and different studies. From the sounds of things, you have done much the same.

John. I also decided for a tissue valve. My Dr and husband and I decided that the way these surgeries are going replacement would be via catheter not ohs in the future and risks less than blood thinners. It is hard to face this with young children. Good thoughts and hopes your way.

Hi John,
I wish you well at ccf. I am 74 yrs old and had av and mv tissue valve replacements at the end of Jan this yr at ccf. I feel great and did not experience any memory loss, depression or decrease in mental ability after the surgery. My surgery pain was minimal but I did feel extremely weak for several weeks. At this time I am back to normal and enjoy 20 mile rides on my trail bike.
Regards Bill

I was in your shoes a few years ago, with essentially the same diagnosis. It's a nervous and anxious time, but stay strong and confident and you will get through this just fine. Get yourself ready for the surgery and then push each day in your recovery.
You will do great!

matt berry Hi, john. Our stories are almost identical (4.8 AA, mild regurgitation, no symptoms). I have my follow-up with Dr. Svensson in couple weeks to see if there is any further dilatation. Dr. Svensson is the man, you will do great. Best of luck from Cleveland!
John Schutte @JH: Thanks! Reading your positive updates are definitely inspirational.

@Matt: Great to hear from you. I was in the same 6-month waiting game prior to my last visit with Dr. Svensson. Went from "wait and watch" to "you're at the stage where we recommend surgery." Not sure why the prognosis changed, since my AA stayed at 4.9. However, based on my height (69"), I'm above the ratio threshold for elective intervention. Will be interested to hear during your visit!
