Hi Darrell. I’m half way through cardiac rehab, and have a question. Based on my stress test before starting, I have an upper range of like 98 BPM. If I only walked, I could keep it there, but when I do things like a walk / run interval, I’ll get above that. I guess I’m wondering what your experience was with heart rate. I’m finding it hard to see how I could realistically begin to increase my workload and be under 100 BPM even with a beta blocker. The only thing holding me back from pushing the pace is that number, not how I actually feel. I feel like I cold be going much harder / longer. Any feedback? Scott

Darrell Malone Hi Scott. I found rehab for me was challenging and got me off on the right foot. Maybe speak with them there and let them know that you feel like you could push a little more. Possibly try different machines? Sounds to me that your coming along well, maybe you hit a wall and they can increase your target a bit. I found the staff quite good there.
John Cook Scott, this is a lot how I felt on both 50mg and 25mg doses of Carvedilol. I could get myself up to an RPE 4/5 walking on hills but it would jump to an RPE 8/9 in the space of a 5 bpms. It felt like the beta blocker was limiting my ability to exercise more than my recovery was.
At 50mg, I had difficulty getting above 100bpm. At 25mg, I had difficulty getting above 120bpm.
It was by complaining to my cardiologist’s PA about it and having my other blood pressure medications adjust that I got my dosage down to 12.5mg and keep my resting blood pressure under 120. Now I can run, get my pulse up in the 140s, and feel like I’m at an RPE 6/7. ... Read more

I actually had a serious argument about it with the PA about my exercising. She’s “old school” conservative in treatment and doesn’t want me running anymore -> ever.
My middle-aged punk comes out whenever someone says, “You can’t ____.” I tend to respond with a literal or metaphorical middle finger.
My surgeon & rehab physiotherapists are fine with my running. I’ll be talking to my cardiologist directly about it in 2 weeks.
Since I personally don’t feel like I should be pushing myself harder than an RPE 6/7 just yet, I’m not asking for my meds to be adjusted any further. Maybe when I hit my 1 year anniversary.

Darrell, I hit send too soon. I’m curious how long you were in hospital for. I think Dr. Ashe suggested 9/10 days because of the need to get the blood pressure locked in, but the nurse at the pre-surgery clinic was saying 5-7, so any insight would be appreciated :). Scott

Scott Mills Thanks Darrell. I’m a week out, so things are starting to feel more “real”. I’m expecting the first few days to be rough, and that after some of those tubes come out, it may get more comfortable. Fingers crossed, and thanks for the reply!

Hi Darrell. Thanks for your note, looks like you and have some stuff in common. I’m having a Ross, and St. Marys, and with Dr. Ashe. Sounds like you had yours a year ago, and I hope all is well. While I’m not super excited about the early days of recovery, I’m very excited to get back to what used to be a very active life. Scott
Thank you for sharing your story! I had the ross as well 2.5 years ago! So glad you are doing well!

Hi Darrell. I am from Canada too. Thank-you for sharing your story. I am still trying to navigate everything too. I really liked the part of finding a doctor that resonated well with you. Do you also have an Aortic Aneurysm and need a Dacron sleeve? My valve is okay but the ascending aorta enlarged. I don't think I am a candidate for the Ross Procedure. Big hugs and prayers for you. I am looking forward to hearing about your procedure and how your recovery is going.

Good morning Darrell, wondering how you’re feeling with surgery just around the corner? I’m a praying person so I will definitely be praying for you, Dr. Ashe and his entire team that you have the best possible outcome. You are in wonderfully skilled hands—as Dr. Ashe says, a Ferrari mechanic! 🏎️ 😁 I look forward to your post-op updates! 🙏🏻❤️🩹

Darrell Malone Hello Sue. I just sat down after taking the dog out. Thank you very much for your prayers I am happy to receive them. I have a lot of different feelings now with how quickly I am moving towards surgery. One feeling I don't have is I am not scared.
Dr.Ashe has definitely made me feel that this decision is the right one as well as the timing.
Yes a Ferrari 🚘 lol I liked that. 👍🏻
Thanks for reaching out and again thanks for the prayers. I will try and do some updates.
Good luck with your journey. Chat soon

Hi Darrell! Nice to meet another Canadian on here! 😊
At this very moment I’m sitting in the waiting room of Toronto General Hospital’s cardiac clinic waiting to meet Dr. Maral Ouzounian to discuss the possibility of the Ross—it seems there are so few surgeons in Canada who do it, or at the volume recommended.
I’m also waiting to get Dr. Ashe’s opinion as his wonderful assistant Von was the first to get back to me when I began making my inquiries and I was told he has performed over 90 RPs.
Do you know when you’ll be having your surgery? Though I’m much older (and not sure if I’ll even be approved for it) I would love to follow your progress. Wishing you all the best! 🙏🏻❤️🩹
