Hi Christi, my surgery was March 28, had rigid sternal fixation to close the sternum. Minimal pain after day 2-3. At discharge pain was 0-1, was able to lift arms over my head from day 1. Can lift up to 15-20lbs each hand. Have had very little pain at 2 weeks today. I know everyone's situation is different just passing along my experience.
Good luck in your journey, you'll be on the other side of this in recovery mode before you know it.

I asked two docs about the plate vs. the titanium wire. The plate is rigid and if a redo is ever required it may have to be drilled out whereas the wires can be more easily cut and redone. I have no pain from the wires I got 3 weeks ago. Hope this info helps a fellow Texan.

Timothy Williams I struggled with the thought of sternotomy as well. I was worried about strength and athletic performance limitations after. My surgeon recommended this approach for best chance of success with my procedure. I trusted him and had mine on March 11. Only wires. I can't believe how much progress I've made since then. The thought of a sneeze is still scary, but I have full range of motion in my arms and can see where I'll be back to normal in no time.
My advice is if you don't like a surgeon's recommended approach, get a second opinion from a different surgeon. It's good to challenge or question, but let them do what they do best (training & experience with a certain approach).

Christi, hello from a fellow Texan, just north of you a bit in the East Texas piney woods. Just saw that you have upcoming mitral valve surgery next week. I had mitral and tricuspid repairs and a Maze 9 weeks ago with a full sternotomy, closed with sternal wires. I've had very little sternum pain from the beginning and needed no more than OTC Tylenol during the first weeks for minor discomfort. As an ICU nurse, you probably know a lot more about all this than I do, but I did want to reassure you about the full sternotomy. Prayers and good wishes for your surgery!
