About Me (In My Own Words)
I had 3 holes and 2 leaky portions of mitral valve. This was repaired at age 8. I was told have would need to be replaced by age 25. I'm 52 and just now needing it. I thought this would be an excellent 52 birthday gift for myself so here I am.
First of all, let me start by saying I'm an ICU nurse. Therefore, I believe I know enough to make myself stupid about this surgery. I'm swirling around about how I feel about a few things with my upcoming surgery. My first operation at age 8 was done with an incision under my right breast. My surgeon said since I've had significant corrective surgery before, the best access would be with a sternotomy. The thought of this scares me immensely. My doctor says he closes with titanium wires. I've read about sternal plates. I'm going to ask my doctor about them.
Doc also told me because my valve has been repaired before, I need it replaced with a mechanical valve. This also means I'll be on Coumadin for the rest of my days. This sounds so intrusive to my schedule. I'll get over it! I do welcome any and all advice. I know there's many more questions I haven't even thought of. Oh yeah, I'd sue appreciate your prayers too!
