Hi Carlie, I relate to your situation. I am still recovering from the initial news of severe mitral valve regurgitation. I also met with 5 surgeons... and the 5th one was the charm! My mitral valve was successfully repaired this Spring, and while it is alot to go through- I wanted to share that Im back into my life and still can hardly believe Im on the other side of it. For me, I was very worried about the outcome, but the physical discomfort was temporary and very manageable. I was not prepared for the emotional rollercoaster-ness of it all though, so I hope you will be patient with yourself in your healing. I just started a new job and there are days where I almost forget that I had OHS just 4 months ago. Wishing you the best...

Carlie,
I'll be thinking of you tomorrow and as you move into recovery. I guess as a health care professional you know a bit of what's to come and that may be a bit of a blessing and a curse at the same time. Know that you're in good, capable hands, and we'll see you on the other side!

Robert S. Howell Prayers going out to you and your recovery. You will do great and be back in action in no time. Hardest thing for me was just being patient and allowing my self to heal. I have had a great set of medical professionals and my wife was outstanding throughout the recovery period. Best wishes!!!
Mary Beth Evans posted a note for Carlie that says:

I am an 80 yr. old retired nurse, was scared to death, and all my worries were a waste of time! You will do fine also and will return to school in the fall! Hang in there...the waiting is the worst part!💕❤️

Carlie,
I had my mitral valve repaired August 9, 2017. It was a Barlow's valve.... lots of extra tissue in the leaflets. Dr. Sloane Guy at ny Presbyterian repaired it robotically, without cutting away any tissue. He used two sets of artificial chords and a support ring and achieved very good functionality. The day I came home I climbed my stairs seven times! My heart has never been so quiet. So have faith, the Cleveland Clinic is number 1 in the nation for heart surgery. My surgeon thinks a Barlow's valve is one of the easiest types to repair! I'm sure you will be fine....and you have youth on your side.

Hi Carlie,
By some strange coincidence the chap who works me over to help my aching bones (my physical therapist) had exactly the same condition as you at about your age. He was a professional hockey player and had been drafted by an NHL team. He had the surgery and was able to play hockey again - ending his career early due to a knee injury of all things shortly thereafter. He was able to get a degree and has a very successful practice. I understand that the Cleveland Clinic is a very good hospital and know that you're in good hands. As for the fall, is there a way that you can perhaps arrange for a lighter semester?

Carlie Marsh Hi, Steven! Unfortunately, my nursing school has zero tolerance or flexibility with regard to clinical rotations. Understandably, they worry that I might get hit by a combative mental health patient or might have to perform CPR. I could take the classes if they could be separated from clinicals but they can't. Thanks for reaching out!

Welcome, we are all with you. I have learned a lot from the folks here about what to expect. I do recommend buying Adam's book it is worth it. I know at some point I will need surgery myself and I am guessing it could be within the next year. Just have faith, and all of us will be sending prayers your way.
Jennifer John I also highly recommend Adams book. It has helped me so much, before and after surgery.
Hey Carlie! Is Cleveland Clinic giving the repair a shot or are they just replacing it? At 20 years old I’m sure you’ll bounce back very quickly.

Susan Lynn Carlie - I had my Barlow's MV repair done last December by Dr. Scott Goldman just outside of Philadelphia at Lankenau's Heart Pavilion. It was also a minimally- invasive, mini-thoracotomy procedure. Almost no pain, 3 day hospital stay, and easy recovery. Check out his videos on YouTube. Best of luck!

Carlie Marsh Thank you so much for reaching out! Cleveland fully intends to repair the valve and will only replace it if they can't repair it. Unfortunately everyone seems to think getting a successful repair will be an incredible feat. I'm grateful that they still want to try.
