I can certainly relate to your dissappoinment. I recently got news that after this major valve repair surgery in December I still have a leak. Get a second or even a third opinion until satisfied, stay positive and bring lots of questions with you.
Good Luck Nancy - I just had a valve replaced on April 7th with a cow valve. I cannot imagine hearing that I would have to go thru this again so soon. I would get another opinion and go someplace where they do these in the 1000"s to see what your options area. I will be thinking of you. Randa G
You should definitely get another opinion. I just heard about a 93 year old man from here in Wisconsin who went to the Mayo Clinic in Arizona and got a replacement valve for his failing first replacement valve, and they did it all percutaneously (through the femoral vein in his leg)! He had it done on Good Friday, and is doing just fine. I know his was an experimental case, but I'm sure it is something that will be available to everyone soon. Maybe you can hold off long enough to have it done percutaneously. I hope you do more research.
I'm so sorry to hear your valve is failing so soon . . . it does happen but it is rare. If I was in your position, I would get a second opinion at one of the major heart centers - Cleveland, Mayo, Hopkins, etc. I had my surgery at Cleveland and they make evaluations very easy - just go to their web site, get the phone number of the consulting nurse, and call. You don't live all that far from Cleveland so you may want to go there for a complete work-up.
Of course it is raining, but I love the greenery. Yes hindsight is 20/20...but it's not your fault. In one of my journal entries I expressed what if I had handled things differently. A friend reading my journal quickly pulled me aside and said don't blame yourself. We do what we know to do. Thank goodness we are always learning.
Nancy, sorry to hear about this. I also work in the hospital where I had my surgery done. Although rare I have heard of tissue valves needing to be replaced for the very reason you mention. You made the best decision for you at the time. You will get through this again. :-)
