This is a great website. I found so much information here. My husband is having aortic valve replacement in five weeks. I’ve been through open-heart surgery with my dad twice for bypass, but this time we were thrown for a loop. My husband has no symptoms whatsoever, but he has a bad murmur and a leaky valve. His heart is starting to become slightly enlarged and it’s time. He’s very calm about it, but I’m scared to death. Is there any kind of family support available anywhere? I’m hoping that there is at the hospital where he’ll have his surgery because I think I probably need it.

Rose Madura Paula, sometimes I think it can be just as hard emotionally on the family than the patient! I'm sure you will be a great support to your husband. Try to remember that they do these surgeries all the time and are quite good at it. The odds of success are very high! Thank you for sharing your journey with us. God bless you both.

Rita Savelis There are definitely specialised therapists at hospital, both for patients and family. Do not hesitate to ask and to find someone to express yourself to. It's all hard. Being a caregiver is harder than being a patient because strength is expected from you. Patients can react however they want, but caregivers are supposed to remain solid. It's a lot to ask. In any case a patient will never know what a caregiver went through and the other way around. Take care.
