Yesterday was my 1st day back to work. It was a long day and I was a little tired but it feels good to be putting one of the last pieces of my life back in place.
I Still have a few pieces left which should get resolved over the next month or so. I've had to keep reminding myself that this is a long term project and to be patient.
I've learned alot and found support from reading the posts on this site and I'd like to thank everyone that has responded to the few times I have posted. Your support has been a very big help.

Had another appointment on Monday. They seam to be please with my progress. Now that i'm no longer in a medicine induced fog we finally got to talk about the condition of my valve pre-surgery. He was amazed that I was able to function concidering how bad the valve was.
I am finally cleared to drive with out restriction, and I need to talk to work about a return to work date. I still have a small part of the inssission that is open and they will continue to follow up on. Oh and I still have the Holter monitor. So not 100% but getting there and finally to the point where life can start returning to normal.
Civita Fahey Glad to hear that Steve.. hopefully all will be normal soon.,

Had a folow up appoint yesterday but just after I got up my heart decided to race along at 130 - 150bpm just as I was sending my vitals to the telemonitoring folks. So as you can imagine that started a flurry of calls from visiting nurses and doctors. Lucky it lasted less then 10 minutes. So off to the doctors I go, this was supposed to be a check on the small piece of my incision that did heal right. (which they did work on) but it turned in to an EKG and alot of question about what happened in the morning. So to shorten the story. I now have an open wound that has been packed needing daily attention, a Holter monitor for the next month, more appointments and still not cleared to drive.
I get that all this needs to be done and I can deal with it as they are just bumps in the road. But not getting cleared to drive hit me the hardest. I'm feeling good pretty close to 100% and still being dependent on others to cart me around is fustrating and has caused some issues with my kids who I depend on to get me to places I need to be. I know we get through this but now that I'm doing good not being able to drive has been the biggest stress on my family.
Sorry for the rant but I needed to vent.

Bob Jensen Steve no worries feel free to rant. My surgery was just a couple days after you ours and I am going in tomorrow to see my surgeon for the first time almost a month after the surgery and then my cardiologists today after that who knows that they have to say where this is going but all I do know is that I'm grateful to be alive in the great work they did so if I have to be on the bench for a little longer I will just relax and enjoy the view and breathe in the fresh air knowing that I have a couple extra years of life because I made the decision to do this surgery hope you're doing better in the near future

Phyllis Petersen It's hard to depend on others, but knowing that it isn't forever makes it a little easier. I went nuts until I felt I could drive and when I did I could only do short drives at first. Good luck getting your HR under control so you can have more freedom.

Over all thing's are looking good and they are pleased with my recovery. I was hoping to get cleared to drive but not yet. Plus I may have the start of an infection, or it could be one of the stithes irritating the surrounding tissue. Either why they put me on antibiotics and go back on Monday for a follow up.
I am also suprised at much of a change for the better i notice from on day to the next, I just need to remember that I do still have restrictions that I need to follow.
Civita Fahey Good to hear you're on the mend Steve..

Dwight Miller Hi Steve, glad you are home and feeling back to yourself. Take it slow. I had the same concerns when I got home,. I felt great and did things I shouldn't have. It took me a few days to realize that even though I looked and felt great, my body and heart told me it needed to recover. Enjoy the naps.

Rita Savelis Try not to worry Steve. You will do some things that will tire you out, unexpectedly, but they won't undo the doctor's work. You'll feel tired, and the next time you might take it easier.
But I hear you on the worry. There is pre-surgery worry and post-surgery worry.
It takes time to heal. It takes time to feel "safe".
Take care.

Stephen Phayre Steve - my surgeon specifically told me not to get twisted out of shape about worrying about forgetting about sternal precautions. He said everyone has a few times that they forget and that it's actually pretty hard to do major damage with a single mistake. I'm approaching week 6 post-surgery and have had a few times where I sat down too quickly, or slid out of bed without being careful. My body reminded me pretty quickly that I shouldn't do that ;)

I have had issues and had AFib past 6 weeks. I am currently still on anti-arrhythmics and anti-coagulation at about 14 weeks and see the EP (Rhythm specialists) next week to determine next steps.
I'd love to hear other answers as well.

Got the news in august that it's time to Concidering replacing my aortic vavle. We have been monitoring it for about 10 years now so it was no real suprise. It still has hit me kinda hard. Met the surgeon about 2 weeks ago. He left it up to me when I want to scedule it. It has been waying pretty heavy on me after meeting with him. I have been trying to find support groups in the area(southern NH) so I can talk with someone that has been through it. But they don't seem to exist so that has added to my fustration. I guess I've come to terms with it, if thats what you want to call it . Just decided today to have the surgeon schedule it sometime in the next few weeks. In part because there is never a good time to do things like this, and to do it and get it over with so I can start heeling and get on with my life. My Doctors are great and vèry reassuring but that is part of thier job. The family is also very supportive but there are still so many uncurtinties that make this hole thing is pretty scary.

Steve Lewis I have a tenitive date of Nov. 15th. And i have another appointment with the surgeon coming up next week about finalizing it. My question is, How do you know when it's time? Thing is I don't feel sick, I do have some endurance issues when I workout and at times my heart feels like it is doing sumer salts so yea i do get that something is going on. but like I said I don't feel sick. MY biggest concern is having surgery and not feeling any differnt. Or see any improvement/changes.

Rita Savelis That's how I feel, Steve. No improvement, just changes. In this way, it is very similar to when I had cancer. Cancer treatment was hell, but I didn't see any "improvement". Although one can say it saved my life, I didn't feel any "symptoms" before...
Knowing when it is "time" is one of the most difficult calls. Some people have no symptoms but look bad in tests, so doctors make the call. Others have symptoms but their tests are still okay. Some have both.
I think it can be a difficult call for patients and doctors.
In hindsight I'd recommend waiting as long as one can, unless your symptoms have made a big change on your quality of life. But of course one gets so anxious pre-surgery that many just want to hurry it up.
The risk with waiting can sometimes be having more damage happen to your heart. Again you can't always see or feel it.
What you really want is a surgeon you can trust, ask questions of, and who makes a good call for you. But know that this decision is hard for doctors too.

As my surgeon said, "you can't skirt this".. its going to eventually need to happen so do it when its convenient for you..
