Hello! Scheduled for mitral valve reoperation (re-replacement) on Monday 7/28. First surgery was a robotic procedure back in 2011, where a bovine valve was placed, as per my decision. I have learned that my reoperation cannot be robotic, and, frankly, the idea of possibly having to do this AGAIN, at least one more time after this (I am only 58) is not appealing. I am leaning towards going mechanical this time, but the Coumadin regimen (not to mention the audible ticking?!?!) freaks me out. Would love to hear what life with a mechanical valve is like!

James Roberts After a failed repair I had a mechanical mitral valve replacement 4 months ago as I did not want to undergo a 3rd open heart surgery. The INR levels are quite hard to get right but I've been roughly in the right range for about 6 weeks now so hoping the blood tests can decrease in regularity soon. The ticking was hard to sleep with at first and still is at times but you do get used to it.

Rita Savelis Ticking was a non issue for me. The room had to be very very quiet. Now (10 yrs later) I rarely hear a thing. I freaked about anticoagulants at first, and your body has to get used to them. INR varies and so you have to check yr level at least once a month. I haven't changed anything I eat or my lifestyle. Now years later I do not think about them at all. I got 2 mechanical valves 10 yrs ago at age 53.
