It started off good but this past weekend was not. My hemogloblin dropped resulting in me becoming excessively tired over the weekend. I could not take 15 steps without being extremely fatigued. It was as though I never had my surgery. My team of doctors have been on the case and we have been making some adjustment in which I have been getting better.

It's good to be back and to be able to share. As you know my procedure was September 28th. I spent 5 days on the ICU floor and 2 days on the step down floor. In my conversations with my husband and my mom, I was not awakened until Thursday. I was very lethargic for a couple of days and they did have to give me a pint a blood in which the following day I felt much better. On Thursday they did start getting me to sit up and walk around however on my first attempt I only made it to my door but on the following days I was able to walk further and further. To the point that I was able to walk 3 times a day up to 500 feet. I will say that overall, I had a very positive experience and the care that I received was amazing. I was discharged on Oct 5th and have been getting a lot of rest. I walk within my house right now and use my spirometer faithfully. I'm so glad to finally be on the other SIDE!
Have a Great Day

The past week has been kinda rough because I came down with a cold. I mean it was hard and really got me depressed because I thought my date was going to be rescheduled. After going to get my Coumadin levels checked, it was too high and I almost had to go back to the hospital. Fortunately I took more lasik to get the fluid off me and I started to feel better. The past couple of days, I've felt pretty close to normal but just walking slow. Now I'm in better spirits because I know the 28th will be MY DAY! I've gotten my house together. My mom is here with me and now I have to get my bag together. There have been so many prayers sent and I am most grateful for them. I know initially that it will be a little rough but I do have faith that I will come out much better than how I am currently living. I've said it in one of my earlier post that I might be a little crazy but I am far from nervous or scared. I am so excited that I will be on this journey to wellness.

Terry Gillen They just wanted to get the paperwork out of the way, where you initial and sign five or more pages. Then they ask you about your meds you get to watch a short video telling and showing you what will be happening to you from the moment you get to the hospital surgery day until you wake up in intensive care. Also they took a X-ray of my lungs, drew blood from my artery. A therapist will come in to talk to you and show you how to use the respirator they send you home with. They even put your hospital bracelets on just simply making it to where when you get there for your surgery you don't have to do a thing they will look at your bracelet and send you straight back to surgery makes everything easier for you and the hospital. I almost forgot either your Surgeon or the gentleman that buts you to sleep will come and answer any questions you might have and walk you through step by step what will be going on while you are asleep. I can't ever spell the title of the man who puts you to sleep so just wanted to say that because they work for their degree and I certainly do not want to come across disrespectful. Mine was a very nice man and very good at what he does. God bless you my dear and everything is going to be just fine. I had my surgery at the Heart Hospital in Austin Texas so I am not sure if your pre op will be the same but I bet it is similar. One more thing when they start to draw the blood from your artery they usually send their best to draw the blood I did not even feel mine she told me the trick to it was to find a place where the arteries are not crossing each other. When it was over I ask her why she did not tell me she was so good at it beforehand, she said she did not want to brag. Do not be afraid to speak up and ask her about what I told you about arteries not crossing each other. I don't want to scare you this doesn't even hurt for most people I have had several surgeries and I think I must have had a few people who just like to hurry and get it over with. Anyway I need to quit harping on that I am just a big baby when it comes to getting stuck with needles. But when it comes to Heart hospitals they hire nothing but the best I will be praying for you sweetie.

Joshua Trimberger For Pre Op they make sure you are very informed and answer any questions you have. They also draw blood, do X-rays, and it may include tests like CT scan with dye or heart cath (they will have told you about those prior to you showing up). They will also have paper work for you to fill out and surgical consents to sign. Depending on the hospital you may meet with financial services as well to discuss payment. They will probably give you a special soap to shower with on the surgery day too. The social worker is not out of the ordinary. They just want to make sure you're going to be ok when you are released from the hospital and go home. The one thing they don't want is to have to readmit you weeks later because you had trouble with recovery at home or didn't have anyone to help you at home. They also can help set up home health care or rehab or even help get equipment like oxygen for your home. Basically in my experience the social worker was just another point of contact with the hospital that checked on me periodically to make sure everything was good and I was on track for recovery. Their main goal is to make sure you aren't readmitted to the hospital as they are graded on that and it can affect funding if they have a high re-admittance rate and can even affect insurance companies not wanting to renew contracts with the hospital if they have a high re-admittance rate as re-admittance costs the insurance company more money.

I had to go see my primary today because I was coughing up cold and my wheezing has gotten progressively worse. Whatever side I lay on, I could hear myself wheeze. Even when I would sit up, I could still hear myself wheeze so needless to say I have not been getting any sleep for the past week. I was given antibiotics, cough suppressant and I have to increase my water pill. I feel alot better knowing that I am being given enough time to get better so that I can move forward with my procedure. Next week will be full. I have to go to Pre-Op, I will be having another conversation with my surgeon and I have to go to the coumadin clinic for orientation on lovenoxx that I may have to take. Come on September 28th I'm ready for you.

I hope everyone is doing well and continue to stay on the path to wellness. It's been a while since I've posted but I look and see many posts from various people and you continue to give me hope that all will turn out well when I go for my procedure on the 28th.
It's starting to get a little more real today when I started getting calls from the Coumadin clinic today and I was able to get in another appointment with the surgeon that is doing my procedure.
Today was actually the first day in months that I felt a little bit normal in terms of not being winded and not having my feet swell. Then I got to thinking that very soon I will be able to feel "normal" all the time. I miss that feeling so much.
The support, prayers and encouragement that I have been given from many friends and family members have been very uplifting but coming here to read various posts from those that are "on the other side" have been just as uplifting and it continues to put me in a positive mindset that things will be ok despite some of the small obstacles that I may come across.
Thank you for sharing your journey. Trust and believe that what you say does have an effect on people and just because we don't comment, does not mean that we are not listening.
Wishing everyone a good week!

Today my husband and I went to Costco and I had to get an electric cart to get my shopping done. It was very embarrassing and made me very sad that my body has gotten to this point that I had to break down and get an electric cart in order to get something done. I know that I am no where near needing an electric cart in my life. I am an extremely mobile and active person. To see myself now at the point where I'm taking 20 steps, I am tired. To see my self not being able to walk up 10 steps without being tired. To see myself not being able to walk at a normal pace without being tired is soooo frustrating. I am looking forward to tomorrow so that I can call my surgeon and see if I can make my appointment for the last week in September although I wish I could have it tomorrow.
When I read some comments about being afraid or scared, I can relate to the fear but for whatever reason I am just the opposite. I don't know if it is because I have been through so much in my life (cancer, stroke, and A-fib) but I know I'm not meant to be this way and this is something I don't have to live with and I have the ability to get it fixed so that I can be the person that I was a few months ago. With all that I have been through I firmly believe in maintaining a positive attitude. I have overcome so much to not be otherwise. (and I'm not even 50 yet) I have a 12 year old daughter who I have to continue to raise so that she will become strong self-sufficient woman. I maintain my positivity for her because that is who I am here for in addition to my husband who continues to be my rock and support through all this. So once I have my date, I will be jumping for joy because it will be one more day that I will be closer to being ME.
Shandra Boyd Sorry for being so lengthy but I just had to get that out :)

Got a chance to see the surgeon for my second opinion and echoed everything the first surgeon told me. I've come to accept what needed to be done with me, it was just reassuring that they were both on the same page. I had the most comfort level with the first doctor so I think I'm going with him. Both surgeons have a wealth of experience and are at the top of their field, I just found that I had a stronger comfort level with the first one.
Now my husband and I will talk over the weekend and see when I will have my procedure

Not sure where to start or how to begin.
So I guess and will just say that I have been given the news that I have to have my mitral and aortic valve replaced. The news was easy to digest due to the fact that since February of this year, I have been tired, short of breath, winded and retaining fluid. Initially I thought it had something to do with my lungs however my pulmonologist suggested a catherization and another discussion with my cardiologist (I also have afib).
From the catherization to the TEE, it was confirmed that I have severe mitrial regurgitation. In having a discussion with the surgeon we went over my options regarding biological vs mechanical valve replacements. Due to my age (47) and my lifestyle (active), I'm not sure if I want to go with a biological valve. I've been on Coumadin since 2009 due to a stroke so being a Coumadin lifer does not bother me to much.
I must say that coming across this site and reading a lot of the stories, blogs, etc has been extremely helpful for me so thank you to all that have shared their stories.
Currently I have another appointment with another doctor for a second opinion in which I know he is going to say the same thing so I don't expect anything different.
I'm not sure how this will sound but there are times in which I can say that I am looking forward to this process because being in my current condition which is always being tired, wheezing when I sleep, and fluid retention SUCKS! My quality of life has severely deteriorated in contrast to how I previously let my life. I desperately want to get back to the level. Now don't get me wrong, I don't do marathons or anything that is extremely strenuous. But I would like to go back to exercising, walking and running on the treadmill. I so miss being active.
As my journey progresses, I will be sure to post.

Rita Savelis I had 2 valves replaced and a 3rd one repaired. If you are already on coumadin mechanical valves might be a good choice with double repairs because those new valves (if tissue) can wear out at separate times in the future. I understand your wanting to get on with it, because yes living with the tiredness is hard. Double valve surgery can mean a longer recovery, and it takes time to feel good again. I hear you about wanting to be active again. You'll get there. Take care.

Emily Rowley Hi Shandra, welcome to the community. This is a big decision, a tough one, and one for you to make the final decision (unless in surgery your Surgeon needs to otherwise) that you feel comfortable with useful information. A second opinion is a great idea! Might they be able to repair your valves? I've had severe mitral regurgitation, and am happy to be of any assistance to you and others ☺
