Sean Coast Hello, still no surgery but I have 3 different hospitals I'm looking at and in discussions with and of course I'll go with the best one I can. I haven't visited the group page for awhile. Thank you for your concern. I realize for me that the hour is late (figuratively) and I need to make a decision now. I am grateful for those who have spurred me on such as you because it keeps me from getting to complacent about my situation. I guess I happened into this situation in an environment I don't know and am not familiar with (i.e. Oregon). I'll fell much better if I can get to doctors I can trust. Medically speaking, Oregon is a little like a third world country when it comes to medical care. As far as the website working goes, every time I'd use the heart link to read someone's post it would take me right back to the log in page. Hmm! I'm reading this so it must be working properly again. I guess there must have been a glitch in website software.

So, they told me to come to the hospital and 6 p.,m. to check in for surgery, due to issues I am having, I did, I was with my dog as I couldn't find temporary residence for her. They said they'd have put in the animal shelter, I told them I'd leave, and did. The shelter is a "kill shelter" I've got to find a new medical team, I am never going back to that hospital again.

Catie B Sean... My tone of voice as I write here is gentle, and I feel compassion toward you. I'm a huge lifelong dog lover and I still grieve my furry girl who died from cancer two years ago. But it's been weeks now and I had hoped you would have secured a good way for your beloved dog to be cared for by now. There are pet walkers who could come to your home to feed and take her out; there are veterinarians who board dogs; there are separate boarding places. Some vet techs board pets in their homes. Lots of possibilities. But getting that set up can't happen at the very last minute--it takes a little planning. If it looks like you'll need emergency surgery, you'll need to arrange for someone/someplace that can step in right away for you.
I'm sure you're upset about what just happened. But making arrangements for your dear pup is something only you can take care of. The only job the medical team has, is to help with your physical needs, your surgery and recovery.
Please move quickly on deciding who and where your dog will be cared for, and have them ready to step in. This is a very necessary practical step and you can't let this keep derailing you.
Wishing you the best, as always.
Barbara Wood Best wishes Sean & wonderful reply Catie.

Sean Coast Hello, I am not saying anything for sympathy. I am simply conveying my real situation to this group as I have no one else to convey to. I took my dog because there was nothing else I could do. I do not blame the hospital for this, It is true though that once I saw my room, the big black sofa for visitors, the black tinted windows with silver decor, all this looking more like a viewing room in a funeral home, I was happy they told me to leave and rather relieved that it was necessary to take my dog and go, thereby giving me an out. Oregon is an extremely hostile place to be. I don't trust Oregon doctors any more than I trust anyone else here. I realize I will have to go someplace else to get this surgery done as it won't get done here. As for the nay sayers, believe me, I am very sick, very weak, I have lost half my mental capacity probably due to the lack of blood and oxygen to the brain and I would give anything if I could find a situation where I could get this surgery done. Thank you to those that answered.

Catie B Sean, I'm a trauma survivor and I get it that it's very hard to trust anyone. I totally get it about anxiety and fear, as well. But you're going to have to find a way to trust SOMEONE. (Not yelling, just emphasizing). In this case, you just have to. You have to get someone ASAP and trust them to care for your dog. Commit to it and be unmovable. You have to get a good surgeon and make that leap of trust to put your life in their hands and let them work on you. It has to happen. You've got to dig out some internal strength and take the steps. Sean, not patting myself on the back when I say this, but I walked through the process on my own and I had no one with me for my surgery out of state. It was very hard. I'm just saying you can do this. You've got to. People here care, they care a lot! It's just that we all see you're the only one who can take responsibility for these things. Make some good decisions for care for you and your pup, then don't let anything move you off course.

Rob Sparling Sean, in the upper right of the screen you will see a link to heart hospitals. It depends on your specific situation and needs. Beyond that, you then need to decide how much you value the skills of those teams (and their process-driven approach) and compare that to teams closer to your home. The process to get in to see them differs and takes some time and dedication, in some cases. But once you are on the docket everything moves along and you just do what they ask you to do! Keep a clear head and shop for the skills you need and the place that fits you best. Eliminate risk if you can do it!

Catie B Not all heart hospitals are listed here, Sean. Just ones that have agreed to be listed on the site. Many here do have phenomenal reputations. Are you thinking about traveling out of state now? It does take some lead time and providing them with all necessary records so they can evaluate your situation. My own process was not quick. I've been under the impression that you're needing surgery ASAP. Another consideration is, will your insurance cover your surgery out of state?
US news & world Report ranks heart hospitals on their website. Even if you're not able to go out of state, you could research online to find which hospitals in your region do the best job with heart surgeries. Just some thoughts.

Sean Coast Catie B Thank you for your advice. I'm not sure of the year but one of the top one's on the list you mentioned was UCLA Medical Center which is the only hospital that has done surgery of the anesthesia involved kind on me. I would love to go down there for surgery and I will call on Monday. Yes, from what I've been told I will have to do something soon. There appears to be only one cardio-thoracic surgical group in my region but I understand that in Portland there are at least 3 renowned ones. I I can swing it I would prefer Stanford or UCLA though, that is, if I can swing it. Which hospital did you end up going to if you don't mind my asking?

I went to Cleveland Clinic in 2016. But in my case, I had time and it was a process of several months with a long-distance consultation first. Then another delay, since I needed to switch to one of their more experienced surgeons.
I didn't realize you have special considerations for anesthesia. On a quick search last night, Kaiser Sunnyside in Clackamas appeared to be high-performing in aortic valve surgeries. Don't know anything else about them.

UNBELIEVABLE! It wasn't me this time, I was ready to go through with the SAVR on Friday, sniffling and all. They said I MAY have an upper respiratory infection which would make surgery at this time to risky. They said that my surgeon is going on vacation for a month and wouldn't be able to see me until mid to late January. What if I have an emergency? I said, "I may not last that long as I'm deteriorating fast." They said, as he's going away it's the only alternative. Hmm! Okay, the little character on my right shoulder is secretly laughing and saying, hey, we dodged a bullet on that one. On the other hand the little character on my left shoulder know's that this isn't so and we're just prolonging the inevitable, I just hope we're not prolonging it until it's too late.

Susan Lynn Sean - I would think this surgeon would have put you on some major prescriptions to clear up your cold before surgery - especially knowing how critical your situation is. I suspect there's another cardio thoracic surgeon covering for him for the next month, you might want to consider inquiring. Remember, if you go into the ER, you'll get whomever is on call. All the options to make an informed choice will be gone. You may even want to get checked out by your surgeon, today, just to see if your sniffles are enough to warrant prolonging your procedure for another month. This could all be behind you, tomorrow.

Susan Lynn Sean - Surgery is almost behind you. By the weekend, it's in the history books. Clinical trials generally require a lot of scrutiny - you may have been given a provisional approval based on the initial questions. Plus, in your advanced condition, you may not be able to wait until you find out if you officially qualify or to actually get into the trial. You're having a proven procedure on the 20th. Relax for the next two days and enjoy the one minute nap - that's what surgery feels like and it's over. You can do it.

Hmm! I went to my surgical consultation yesterday. It was with allegedly, the top surgeon in the area. My pen had fallen out of my shirt pocket, and I said, "oh, I dropped my pen" but froze as I often do with my condition. He picked it up, he was very friendly over all and answered all my questions and really explained everything and seemed to know what he was talking about. With the pen I mentioned earlier? No, I'm a guy, he wasn't being a gentleman. My concern? He picked it up when he noticed he didn't have his pen so he could write down the name of the suggested valve so I could do my home work on it. Thanks to the group here. I understood that he was a pro, he knows what he's doing and what I need. However, He kept the pen. I don't believe it was out of malice, though it could have been, therefore he must have spaced out a little bit. I space out all the time, I even spaced out and forgot to ask for my pen back and didn't realize he had it until today, but I'm very sick and not a surgeon. Should I be concerned about that? I mean he put my surgery date on the short list, I don't have much time he says and it should have been done long ago. I mean his office claims that all I have to do is call and say something is wrong in the mean time while I'm waiting and immediate action will be taken. What do y'all think?

Hello Ya'll,
I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the fact that I backed out of my original OHS scheduled in another town in August to have my aortic valve replaced. I've written in this group about the reasons behind that decision and some have supported it in that particular instance but told me I'd better have it done somewhere, soon. Saturday morning I'm walking my dog, I don't feel dizzy, but I do feel disoriented. That's all I remember, when I came to, my bloody nose is smashed into the road, I lift my head and see my dog (the brindle and white one) about 25 yards away smelling bush, I'm in a lot pain and I suddenly realize I'm lying in the middle of the rode. I sit up and scoot to the side of the road. Long story short, as my orientation returns I go home limping and with a sore and swelling arm, I also am bleeding from nose which is all scabbed over. A few hours later I figure I can drive and I head to local ER. The hospital was friendly except for the x-ray technician that took 12 ex-rays of my arm and shoulder (that's not normal is it?) which caused some annoyance due to the danger of the radiation, I finally had to stop him. Anyway, the cardiologist on call asked them to admit me and put a heart monitor on me which they did. A sonogram showed that my aortic valve was leaking more than it had been, in other words, my condition was worsening. I got released from the hospital early this evening with a battery powered heart monitor attached. Still now talk of surgery from this cardiologist though, I wonder if it's because of the August incident. By the way, my arm is still swollen and unusable and my nose is one big scab. Oh well. Good luck to those of you scheduled, and everyone else too.

Susan Lynn Sean - I'm so sorry to read about this terrible incident. I can only imagine how frightened you must have been when you woke up in the road. I don't think that this has anything to do with your decision to cancel your surgery, but it does have everything to do with the fact that untreated valve problems generally get worse over time. It's important to get back on a surgical schedule with a physician and team you trust. Your body is telling you that you can't wait any longer. I wish you all the best. â¤

I have shared about how I cancelled my last surgery date. I'm not sure if my inherent mis-trust of the medical profession and hospitals could have been overcome or not. The reason I'm not sure is because I was quick to cancel when the plans for care of my dog fell through and I had no place to leave her. The black one in my ID photo has gone to be with GOD in heaven. The brindle & white one is till with me and I have to find a caretaker for her while I'm in surgery. The person that was supposed to care for her, cancelled at the last minute. Providence, St. Vincent's in Portland has a woman that helps people with such issues but all the numbers she gave me for animal care were businesses that had nothing to do with animals or animal care. To shorten this, does anyone have any recommendations for animal care while I'm in the hospital?

T.C. Sayles I am not sure what city you are in, but Rover.com is a great service! This is what I used when I had to fly to California for my surgery. I found a lovey college age girl who lived about 10 blocks from me and she had another dog. I met with her and her dog and my dog loved her. I saw her home and it was her and her boyfriend and it was perfect. I left my dog for 2 weeks with her. Got pictures every day and was happy with my choice. She charged $25/day and $30 if they spent the night. I asked her if she would take $25 since it was for 2 weeks and she did happily! When my mom came back (I stayed another week in CA) she said the dog looked perfect and was having a great time! NO fleas, ticks, bumps..nothing! Oh and this was the 3rd time I had used the service...2 other times were when I was living in CA, so this was the first time in Florida using it. Do this if you can't get a friend.

Kevin Shackelford Sean I am a fellow Aortic Valve replacement patient. I suffered the same issues of dizziness. I also have family in Grants Pass and Ashland. I am going to reach out to them for any resources that might be available in the area. I did my cardiac rehab up there and Asante in Medford is highly regarded for its cardiac care.

CHALAH DiCESARE I'm sorry about what you're going thru. Maybe try the vet you take your babies to, or call the local SPCA. Don't put off surgery - your baby needs you to get better. Tell your cardiologist about your anxiety and they may be able to get you some medicine. I have a lot of anxiety too - but I want to walk into the hospital and make the choices for myself. If I am wheeled in on a stretcher - it's the surgeon's choice what happens to me - not mine. So, be brave & move forward - you've got this!!

Hello,
No surgery yet and I hope I'm not too late. I cancelled that last one and now I am feeling very weak and dizzy, I can barely concentrate on my typing. I am thinking about going to the hospital tonight, but I don't leave near one that has a cardiologist.

Susan Lynn Sean - Call your surgeon ASAP. I'm sure you're frightened - we all were before our cardiac procedures. The longer you wait, the more you are at risk of further complications. We "valve" people are generally pretty lucky - we usually get notice about our conditions, have the chance to research and select the surgeons and facilities that have good track records. If you end up being rushed into a local ER, you will get whomever is on call - good or bad, competent or incompetent. You need to apologize profusely to your surgeon for your no show and hope he/she will squeeze you into the OR schedule. You need to do it right now. You'll get through this, but procrastination is no longer an option. Sorry for the brutal feedback. You remain in my prayers.

Hello Sean, God wants you here on earth and because of that you need to do your part. If you need to find another hospital, another surgeon and an agency that help you navigate the healthcare system in or near your area go there. Donât be shy about asking for help. If you donât have a support system if you are a senior contact the senior center near you and ask for help. Your dog needs you healthy. Pray and ask God to guide you and help you get thru this. Blessings

Sean Coast You all are of course right. I keep thinking surgery will work for others, but not for me. Yesterday I went into a local hospital where I was too claustrophobic for the MRI, I had sonograms done on my neck and legs to make sure they were clear enough for surgery and in case they had to use an artery or vein or whatever. Locally they don't do anywhere near as many valve replacement surgeries as my originally scheduled surgeon does up north. I'm a little concerned about that little issue. I just wish I could talk to a surgeon I can have faith in.

Susan Lynn Sean - "We move toward that which we think about." Focus on what you want, not what you don't. Your surgeon will take care of the details. He/she wants a good result as much as you do! Your goal might be getting back to playing with your dog. The rest of it is just the trip to getting there. Be positive - it makes all the difference.

I was supposed to go back up north to Portland with the same surgeon October 9th due to some very odd physical experiences I've been having due to my leaking aortic valve (purple face in one side while of normal color on the other side, feelings of extreme warmth and/or cold etc.). Everyone was friendly and it was a go at first. Then I started running into the rude hospital employees on the phone. I have no support system and people I thought were my friends became very hostile. I started thinking about the first trip mentioned in a prior post, and I never went up. Here I sit with this physical problem that has to be fixed, all the while knowing I'm going to have to find another place to have this done. I have to remember to keep my mouth shut about my situation when I'm out and about, just discuss this issue with persons that are there themselves, like here. I want to thank the friendly posters and if I survive long enough to get back on this issue, I will.

Sandy Laine Sean - please try to find a place you feel more comfortable, with the understanding that no one (I think) feels truly comfortable with this. Use this site or others to search for hospitals and/or doctors that can help you. The doctors that help us are also helping many others - I didn't see the surgeon the day before surgery (as I was told I would) but he explained the next morning that he had been on call for two nights before, and felt rest was more important (I agreed!) I also did not go with the first surgeon I was referred to, though, because I just did not feel comfortable. (Or the second one, either, actually.) I had no symptoms, though - so please try and find someone you are comfortable with as soon as you can. Good Luck.
Sean Coast Sandy, thank you. I am trying to do just that, encouragement is always a good thing to hear.

Okay, with all the problems I was having with my aortic regurgitation, the weakness, the fatigue and all, I did everything I could to make the to trip Portland (Oregon) on the 19th of August for my valve replacement surgery. I'm not from Oregon originally, and it is such a cold and lonely place to be, Portland was no different. The hospital personnel were rude. The pre-op nurse saw my dogs picture on my phone and asked me about her. The nurse said, "She's really going to miss you now that you'll be gone". This didn't make be feel good. The surgeon, who was late for the pre-op by about 2 hours, came in with bright red and watery eyes. She was in a very hostile mood, she looked like she hadn't slept in a week. I went back to my motel room feeling very despondent. I set my alarm clock for 5:00 a.m. that night to check in for surgery on time. I actually woke up at 4 a.m. with one of the worst nightmares I've had in years and it was about the surgeon I had met the evening before, she was doing horrible things to me in this nightmare. I didn't show up for surgery. I packed my bags and returned to southern Oregon.

Marie Myers No. I think we all wanted to wake up from the âyou need heart surgery dreamâ, and find out everything is fine. But the reality is different, and we must all make peace with the reality in one way or another. Acceptance takes time. You do need to feel comfortable with the doctor taking care of you, so get another opinion if you need to do so.
Bradley Dunn Agreed - that first opinion is not enough.

Sharon Cotter I sure understand where youâre coming from, Sean. I just refused to believe I had a valve problem. I kept thinking they would discover that it was all a big mistake. But after 3 different cardiologists told me the same thing, I thought Iâd better start paying
attention.

Rose Madura No, you aren't the only one. I got four opinions and the message seemed worse with each one. As Marie said, it's hard to come to grips with having to go through such a major surgery. Try to focus on the positive...we live in 2019 and they do these surgeries evey day with a very high success rate. You'll be feeling so much better when it's over. Best wishes. Keep us posted.
Sean Coast Thank you so much for all of you that have commented. You are right of course.

Meredith Bray I went for a work physical about a year prior to surgery and the person said they didn't hear a murmur. I thought I was "cured"! My cardiologist laughed the next week. Ah, no, he said, let's talk about surgery. Everyone hopes for a different possibility. Honestly, the best day of my life was the day I woke up from surgery, because I knew I wouldn't have to wait and worry again. Beats my wedding day :)
