As of this time 8 weeks ago (10:00) p.m. CST I was on the table at Vanderbilt University having an aortic valve replaced and ascending aorta. Amazing how far I've come in such a short time. Have gained more stamina and energy and feel better now then the last 6 months pre surgery. Went back to see surgeon a week ago and he said things look good. Doing rehab 3 days a week and not having any problems with that either. Chose at St Jude mechincial valve and the thing does click but it only bothers me at night, I'm getting used to it. Thank you all for this community and I contuine to follow it. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and best of luck on you're heart journeys.

Two weeks post op for aortic valve replacement with aortia graft. Have noticed thanks to my Fitbit my resting heart rate is running upper 90s. About 10-15 faster than before surgery. I've read this is common after OHS, but still concerning. Talked to my cardiac care nurse Monday and My surgeon wanted an EKG, did that and showed I was in rhythm just fast. He doubled my Metoprolol and I can't tell a difference. Anyone else have these issues? Other than that and getting INR adjusted things have been going well.

Shannon Gray I had tachycardia something fierce after surgery... It certainly worries me, but nurses and Dr.s said it was very normal to have happen. As long as you are being checked for fluid build up around heart, you are letting dr.s know, it will hopefully subside after a while. Best of luck!

Rita Savelis Alas, this is very normal, a "side effect" and why many/most are on some sort of betablocker. I went off betablockers after a year and still have a very fast heart beat which I have learned to live with. Sort of.
Take care Nathan.

Darlene Smith I had a resting heart rate of 85-95 after OHS with a prior resting HR of mid 60s. I understand this is normal. After about two weeks post op, my surgeon also doubled my metoprolol, it came right down. Now its mid 60s to mid 70s. I take 25 mg twice a day.

Thanks so much for the comments, support and prayers. I'm sitting up in a chair and have had a nice recovery so far. Nurses say I'm a boring patient; I'm ok with that. They act like chest tubes will come out today. That's my hope cause it's the last big thing to come out. Those facing this surgery, stay positive, it's a big deal but major heart hospitals know what they are doing. Only problem I have is soreness and hurt feelings because I'm usually very active.
Civita Fahey Great news Nathan.. keep up the good work!

Met with my surgeon Friday and awaiting a surgery date in next few weeks. Although my cardiologist didn't mention it my surgeon was concerned with aortic size as well. No measurements have been taken yet he wants a CT to determine size. I have always planned on valve replacement but idea of replacing aortia was something new to me. I know this increases surgery risk, but was curious on others thoughts/experiences.

Joshua Trimberger I went through the same issue when i had my surgery. They did the heart cath and couldn't make an accurate determination of aorta size so did the CTA with dye to get a better look. Turns out I was ok but they told me when it was a possibility that really the only difference was it would add 2-4 more hours onto the surgery but all the outcomes and recovery things would stay the same as we had discussed for just the aortic valve.

Amy Steele First, welcome Nathan! I too was diagnosed with at bicuspid aortic valve at a very young age. I've been seeing cardiologists all my life and last year it was determined that my valve is to the point it needs replacement. My aorta wasn't even on my radar either until my surgeon ordered the CTA to check my aorta. I also need the aortic root replaced and part of the ascending aorta. From what I've gathered it's not uncommon at all for the aorta to be compromised with a defective aortic valve. I will be having my valve and aortic root replaced and have the aorta repaired tomorrow morning. Yes, the surgery is riskier, but I'd rather take care of the aortic aneurism at the same time than to have a ticking time bomb in my chest that they may have to repair later. Something to discuss with your surgeon... I hope that everything goes well for you.

Corey Sines Pretty common diagnosis that goes along with the AV Replacement, as everyone said just adds time to the procedure and a little more risk, but not much overall, at least you can take comfort that it has been resolved, one less worry after surgery.

Ruth Valenzuela I also had my biscuspid aortic valve and part of my aorta root replaced during my surgery last year. I didn't learn of my aorta root needing replaced until my cardiologist performed an angiogram on me 2 weeks prior to surgery. It has a bit of a shocker but overall all it added a few hours to my time in surgery and I had a very successful surgery with only a little afib afterwards. You will do fine but yes, having some fear about it all is so normal but you will find afterwards that it's not as bad as you think. I was also 63 years old at the time of surgery!

Atul Vij Welcome Nathan!!! Like you i am 35yrs old and was diagnosed with at bicuspid aortic valve at a young age and have been diagnosed with an aortic stenosis in Aug. Met few surgeons and have finally made up my mind to get a Ross Procedure. Even though my aorta is enlarged I was told by my surgeon that he will take a look at it during the procedure and if required will replace it.
