My heart surgery is due on July 05/2018. I have a faulty aortic valve, aneurysm of 4.9 cm, and 4 arteries blocked 95%, 90%, 70%, And 40%, hence 4 bypasses. Dr. Allen Speir Of INOVA in Fairfax Hospital will perform the surgery. I have problem in sleeping on my back,... Read more.
I rented an electric recliner for a month, and that made sleeping on my back easier. I also found that taking half a pain pill at night helped me sleep. Having the recliner made it easy for me to get up and down without help, also. I would ask your... Read more.
It was hard for me to sleep on my back for weeks so a recliner will be a good start. And yes, they do give you medication to manage your pain and they put you to sleep. I did not need it and only took Tylenol when I was home.... Read more.
I'm a left side sleeper and a whole series of events, starting with heart surgery, has kept me from being able to sleep in my bed. My reclining sofa has been a godsend--and I'm able to find a comfortable position on my back on it, while back-sleeping in bed is... Read more.
I used a wedge for a while but ended up with lots of pillows and the recliner with travel pillow. The offered me something to help me sleep the night before my two surgeries but I didn't take it.

Dr Speir is my Cardiac Surgeon who has 43 years of experience under his belt. He was one of team member who performed heart transplant on... Read more.
Sounds like you have a stellar team. They gave me senna every day in the hospital, along with stool softeners. But I'll bet they have it all in their repertoire, Miralax, or whatever might be in order. Because, for sure, the pain med is constipating.
Catie is right. The hospital won't even discharge you until you have had a bowel movement. I was given stool softeners every day, and a splash of Milk Of Magnesia on the third day. It is wonderful to have confidence in your surgical team. I think the positive frame of... Read more.
Never thought I would worry so much about the required post-op deuce before discharge, but when it's the only thing standing between you and freedom, it's definitely a priority! However, if the staff knows, they'll be able to treat you with medication. You may want to take a closer look... Read more.
I took softeners and still do. Your medical team will take care of you. Mine knew what I needed before I knew what I needed. Hang in there and take a few deep breaths.
