I have had seven surgeries all relating to bleeding from Warfarin. Are there others out there with this issue? I absolutely cannot have heparin or lovenox. The internal bleeding is quite extensive when I have to take them. Has anyone tried aspirin therapy vs warfarin?

What INR range are you in? I had a St Jude valve, INR 2.5-3.3. Now have an On-X, INR range 2.0-3.0, but some on this site are kept closer to an INR of 1.5.
I've been on Coumadin since 1990 and have tolerated it very well, but it sounds like you are not. I also take an 81mg Asprin daily. When I had my last surgery, very similar to yours, Dr Roselli offered me a tissue valve. I declined only because I really don't want to have a 5th OHS, but there are days it would be great to have a tissue valve again. I had one of those too when I was in my 20s. There is no guarantee that you won't end up on warfarin as the tissue valve ages, but it will most likely be a lower value than the range required of the St Jude valve. Best wishes in getting this sorted out. Thumbs up!

Moosey Chewsington I have St Jude valve, range is 2.0-2.5. I had to have a hysterectomy...twice, they first just removed my uterus because I would bleed all month (mensruation). I kept bleeding so they then went in and removed my cervix. Shortly after that, my appendix burst...bled horribly after all three surgeries. Had a routine colonoscopy and had to have transfusions due to bleeding in my abdomen afterwards. They don't know why I bleed so much. I am thinking of doing Aspirin therapy vs Warfarin. I need more info though. Because of my age they left my ovaries and now I have bleeding cysts. Its quite painful but my husband and I arent ready for another high risk surgery to remove them. I have never gotten to the point where I feel great, probably because I am nearly always anemic from bleeding. My body does not like warfarin at all.

Elaine Cutri Thank you for answering our questions. I can understand why you and your husband are hesitant about anymore procedures. Have you talked to your cardiologist about Asprin therapy? There must be some studies out there. I'll keep my eyes and ears open. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers. EC

Ed Miskovic I have taken daily aspirin (325 mg) for about 7 years before surgery and continued on it after Aortic Valve Replacement (bovine valve) surgery six months ago. The reason for the aspirin only was because I had an allergic reaction to Coumadin when given it for a small stroke. Mr forearms swelled up like Popeye's and turned black and blue. My surgeon accepted that this was an allergic reaction and agreed to prescribe only the aspirin. Maybe a second opinion and/or some google research for medical articles on the subject might give you more options. The best to you.
