Seven years ago I had open heart surgery for an aorta valve replaced. I developed scar tissue and I had to have another replacement. On November 21st, at French Hospital in San Luis Obispo, CA, Dr. Mark Sada, did the TAVR procedure to replace it. I went home the next day with no pain. The color has returned to my face, and I feel great. For 2 weeks I can't lift over 5 lbs or do anything strenuous. I'll still have to go to cardiac rehab. What a difference from open heart
Ana Brusso Congratulations on your successful TAVR. Continued good health and recovery. Blessings

Grace Mason Sorry to hear that scar tissue is causing blockage. Sending prayers for your successful TAVR.

Rose Madura Linda, the TAVR is such a new procedure that they really don't have enough data to say how many times. I do know that my aunt had a SAVR, then 12 years later had a TAVR and 9 years after that another TAVR. But she got an aggressive cancer and passed away so we don't know how long the 3rd valve would have lasted. Praying for a successful TAVR for you. Godspeed.

Steven Hayden Linda, I had an AVR via sternotomy last month. I originally though I wanted a TAVR but two separated surgical teams talked me out of it based on my age. I am 58 and both recommended replacing the valve via a full sternotomy. The reasons where the likelihood of another valve replacement. Both teams explained to me that a TAVR in TAVR is a much risker and more complicated surgery than replacing a valve via TAVR into a valve that was replaced via SAVR. They cited reasons such as not only replacing the valve but correcting any other problems they found reducing the risks/complications for a follow on TAVR. They also would not commit to how long an initial TAVR valve would last. In my own reading I found plenty of supporting evidence that the durability as comparable to a SAVR valve. Maybe this can help with a new conversation with your Doc. You are going to be fine. You got this.

I need my aorta valve replaced for the 2nd time. The first one developed blood clots. I am having the TAVR procedure this time. My surgery is scheduled for Nov.21st. Is it common to have blood clots develop? My last valve only lasted 7 years.

I really had no idea what to expect for recovery. I thought that I would be laid up for months after surgery. I also thought that I wouldn't be able to lay in my bed, so I bought an expensive recliner to sleep in. I pictured myself with a walker for 3 months at least. WRONG! I was up and going full steam after 2 weeks. After one week I could lay on my bed with no problem. I didn't have any pain after the three weeks. Well, a little if I would sneeze. I went back to driving after 3 weeks. I also got released from the home nurse and home physical therapist. The surgeon took me off the blood pressure medicine, the potassium, and the water pill and released me from his care. Now, I just have to wait for my bones to heal so I can go back to work. Another month should do it.

Lilly Black Linda, that's great news! Congrats! I was up and about quite quickly as well after my second surgery, and I was 63 at the time! my husband thought the same as you....walker, cane, etc. 6 weeks later I was walking 2 miles a day, cooking meals, and doing chores. We are lucky.....but we are all different, and cannot compare ourselves to others. Our experiences are unique. Happy for you, Linda!

It has been I week ago today, that I had my aorta valve replaced. I spent 2 nights in ICU, one night in the heart wing. The 4th day I was transferred to a physical care unit. I have full use of my arms. I can move around independently. My biggest pain is my right shoulder, from being on the ventilator. Physical therapy has helped enormously. I heard about the depression that accompanies this operation, and it kicked in yesterday. Has everyone experienced this?

David C @Dan, yes. Crazy Sciatica last week from all this weird sitting/awkward sleeping. It's moving on, but man, I wish I didn't have it on top of everything else. I actually had stopped taking any real kind of pain meds, and pulled some of the more narcotic ones out last week due to lower back/hip/glute pain.

David C I am not sure I want to know. I can tell you I had some pretty crazy neck and shoulder pain about 3 weeks after the surgery...It's mostly gone away, but I do have a little sciatica in my lower back now. Think about it, though. We are laying still for MANY hours...on a cold steel slab. I think I was out for 12 hours before the breathing tube came out. That in itself will cause back/neck pain, not to mention the nature of the surgery and what it takes to let them access the heart. Again, not sure I really want to know. :) I can tell you the more I walk, and stay active, the better I feel.

Meredith Bray I say, talk about it! The week before surgery is blurry in my memory - maybe because I couldn't see anything through all the tears! And I had PMS, so I was just a mess. ANYWAY, here's to no more tears after surgery! My wish for you (and everyone else having surgery) is that you wake with a smile on your face with the realization that "I MADE IT!" and look forward to the long recovery road. Emotionally, the toughest part is leading up to your surgery date.
