For anyone with a loud mechanical valve - any tips on how to muffle the sound so it's not so obvious to others?
I had my aortic valve replaced with the ON-X mechanical valve 7 weeks ago. I have been trying different body postures and layers of extra clothing.
I am not sure. It seems like younger people in the room sometimes heat the ticking sound and I just decided that I am not going to mention this.
My best advice would be to keep your mind active. It is stressful at times. However, at 15 months I rarely think about it anymore. I do hear it. It is always there. However, during work, sports or whatever; I don't hear it unless I think about it. An active... Read more.

Hi all, surgery went well and I'm now the owner of a new aortic root and a mechanical valve! The first few days in ICU were tricky at times but you really do improve a little bit each day. The surgeon, his team and the nursing staff were amazing and... Read more.
I'm glad it went well Kieran. Hardest bit is now behind you. Once you get your inr sorted and sternum healed you'll be back in the game. Hope you're recovery continues to go well. All the best.
Welcome to recovery! Glad to hear things went well.
Woot woot Kieran. You are now part of the post open heart surgery club. I will be thinking about you and your recovery. Be kind to yourself. Push yourself but don't punish yourself. It all gets better from here my friend.
Kieran, You are right in saying each day you will take a step forward and there will be ups and downs. I felt abit poorly in week 3 into week 4. Just generally unwell as compared to week 2
But after my research I realised it was common to feel that way I.e good in week 1,2 and then it goes down week 3 /4 and comes back to normal in few days
Welcome to the recovery side, Kieran. You're on your way to getting back to life!
Thanks for the update, Kieran. You'll see dramatic improvement in the next few weeks. You're going to love rehab! All the best!
Kieran, I had my operation in Melbourne, Australia. I was at the Epworth; where did you have your surgery?

9 days until OHS in Melbourne, Australia. Sometimes I just feel like hitting fast forward, life is strange sometimes.

Kieran - I know how you feel - the last days of waiting are the absolute worst. But, you're mentally prepared for what's ahead - ready to just get it done. You will look forward to that day and know that better days await you after surgery. Hang in there!... Read more.
You can do it! Wishing you a smooth trip through surgery and recovery.
G'day Kieran, I have had 3 ohs in Adelaide over the years & transcatheter repair of paravalular aortic leak a couple of weeks ago. What procedure are you having? No doubt you will have world class surgical treatment in Melbourne.
Aortic valve repair/replacement and same for the root - over 5 cms! My surgeon is Peter Skillington. I feel pretty confident about the team. Any tips?
Do your research on replacement valves if yours can't be repaired. Try and find some peace prior to your surgery in that your team are highly skilled and your future health will be greatly enhanced once you recover from the surgery. Comfy recliner for those first days home for sleep... Read more.
