George Gardopee Hi Gary. While I didn’t have night sweats, my heart rate did elevate by about 20 bpm after my mitral valve repair. It took about 3-4 months (with cardiac rehab during this period) to return to my pre-surgery rates. I was 69 at the time of my surgery.

George Gardopee Garry - I am coming up on my one year anniversary of having my mitral valve repaired. I had severe regurgitation with broken chords. I had had endocarditis and that made a replacement more likely but the surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic was able to salvage my valve and with excellent results. I needed a full sternotomy and I can say it wasn’t that bad. If you can, find a surgeon with a good track record of repair.

Thomas Brusstar My mitral valve went “flail” probably last half of 2017, meaning chordae broke and it was very severe. Once we finally figured out I was having trouble breathing not from pneumonia but from the valve, I had it repaired in July 2018. As of a few months ago it is still perfectly repaired, not leaking at all. The mitral valve is very repairable, so yes you will worry before, but you will be amazed at how you recover. It’s a big surgery for sure, but it is fixable..

Hi Im Garry i have had mitral valve prolapse with regurgitation for several years. It appears no i have a ruptured chordea on the posterior leaflet I am in Canada , i believe and hope i can have mitral valve repair and also feel i am a candidate for robotic surgery but so far my surgeon feels he can do the surgery less invasive than robotic. In our health care system as a patient we generally can not choose
Richard Munson I would love to know what is less invasive than robotic to repair a mitral valve.

Susan Lynn Garry - Robotic is generally considered the least invasive entry to access the heart, but it can result in longer bypass and surgical time. What was your surgeon recommending? I don't think it's MitraClip since you also need a chord repair. Just curious.

Thomas Brusstar BTW, fixing my valve involved just removing the floppy part of the posterior leaflet, to which my broken chordae had been attached. So all that went in the surgical dustbin and they didn’t need any artificial chordae to fix me. Mine was a sternotomy (surgeon said better outcome and more flexible options once he’s in there and sees what there is to do), so I have a scar souvenir that is almost invisible now.
