Hi, I'm a 54 yr old athletic man who found out last year that I have a regurgitating bicuspid aortic valve. I have been an avid cyclist for the past 12 yrs. I've ridden multiple 100 mile rides and even 205 miles in one day. ive Done Mtn bike Races Lasting Up To 8 Hrs. And for the past 5 years I've been racing Cyclocross. During a race last year I suddenly didnt have any power in my legs. And during the week I had numerous heart palpitations. So after tests, and more tests the found out the problem with my Aortic valve. Plus my mitral valve has sustained damage and needs to be repaired or replaced. I've always raced in the lower and slower categories and did ok, but never won any races. I just thought it was because I hadn't trained enough. So now I have an excuse....
Anyway my Dr wanted to postpone the surgery as long as possible as long as I was feeling ok. But lately I've started having more symptoms. So after the recent rounds of testing he decided it's time for the surgery.
We've decided to go to Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale and have an initial consultation with the surgeon on January 8. I have a positive attitude about what's happening now and what is going to happen. I look forward to having the procedure done and continue on with the second half of my life. I don't look forward to the medical bills but fortunately I have insurance.

Rita Savelis You're young and active which should help a recovery go smoothly. But it takes time. Those for whom sports are central can be impatient to get back quickly to the activities that define them. So I wish you a smooth surgery and a smooth recovery but be easy on your body after OHS so that your heart and lungs have the time they need to get back to shape. Take care and a happy 2018.

Civita Fahey Welcome Eric, as Rita said being in good shape will definitely help your recovery. It does take time though to get back to what you want to do, bu you WILL .. we all heal differently.. I am in somewhat good shape as I like to box for exercise.. I am back to 3x a week for 30-45 minutes.. I am 8 months out of AVR (56 yrs old). My goal is 5-6 times a week and soon I will be there.. Consider cardiac rehab after your surgery the will help you get to where you want to be! it helped me tremendously both physically and mentally. Keep the positive attitude and you will do great..

Barbara Wood I'm 7 months past mitral repair- a full sternotomy- and pretty much back to my old self physically. I ski, snowshoe, skate in the winter, hike & mountain bike in warm weather. I'd agree that by about 3 months you will feel close to normal. It is different for everyone though & there have been very fit people that have had a harder recovery. Best wishes to you!

Meredith Bray What everyone already said! I was on a recumbent stationary bike in cardiac rehab in week 5-ish. And the more fit you are prior to surgery, the easier your recovery will be, in my opinion. I was riding roller coasters at 10 weeks :) I think you'll be back on a bicycle before you know it!

Eric Stromerson Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm looking forward to having my 1st appointment with the surgeon. Then I can get a schedule of when things will happen. I've just been waiting so far. However I am very thankful to have caught my problem before it was too late. And that it can be fixed!
