Hello everyone . I am 43 years old. My aortic valve will be replaced, and my aneurysm will be repaired. I'm very curious about something. My fitness level has dropped significantly; I even have difficulty walking now. I stopped playing tennis because I was experiencing severe shortness of breath. Will... Read more.

I can only speak for myself personally. My fitness level has improved but I do have bouts with fatigue from time to time. My running times have improved and I can run farther without walking than I could prior to my surgery. I hope this helps

Diren, from my experience, my fitness level was much better after surgery. I had the same surgery as you are. I hope you have a great result. I'm sure you will feel better. Please keep us posted.

Better, yes, but be realistic about recovery and don't set bar too high. With younger patients (like myself @ 50) there is a tendency to "hear all the noise" about miraculous improvements and being better than ever in no time. It does get better, but fatigue is real, and constant... Read more.

Counter example: I was a runner and never had any symptoms pre-surgery. If I hadn't been told I had a problem, I wouldn't have known. I'm 11-months post surgery today and my running ability is still about 85-90% of pre-surgery. My surgery was a Ross with an aneurysm repair.

Yes there will be improvements in fitness, but you must be patient. It is. A huge surgery, and will require time to recover and then regain your fitness.

Hello, Thank you all for your replies. Sean; My fitness level is terrible; I can't run at all, and even brisk walking only lasts 20-25 minutes at most before I run out of breath and get tired quickly. Your situation is very encouraging; I hope I'll get better too. Rose;... Read more.

Diren, it seems strange to me that your cardiologist told you to return in 6 months yet you are experiencing such fatigue and shortness of breath. If I felt that way I would push everyone I could to get it done sooner rather then later because everything I read says... Read more.

Hi Diren It is a big chance that you come out much better, I did. But it is not a miracle and we all need to adapt to our prerequisites. I am back much better but it takes time, discipline, being prepared for set backs etc. I followed the rehab... Read more.

Hi Chad, thanks a lot for your concern. I sometimes have the same thoughts myself. I’ve seen about four different doctors; only one said I needed to have the surgery without delay (due to the aneurysm), while the others described my aortic insufficiency as moderate. However, I really do get... Read more.

If I remember correctly from a video on another site I watched, CABG patients usually wake up without the tube but sometimes do. Valve patients always wake up with the tube. Personally, I don’t remember the first 1 to 1.5 days. I’m told I woke up and tried to take... Read more.

Diren, I was intubated when I woke up in CICU. I'll admit it kind of freaked me out at first but then I calmed down. They took it out soon after I woke up.

I appreciate your support, @john and @Rose. I hope I can stay calm when I wake up and not freak out or go nuts.
