So far, great news is that my heart is doing well. They repaired my custom valve and my pulmonary valve was replaced. Have had no afib. Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time getting my lungs to improve. I'm also having a hard time coming off pain meds. I still need to take close to a full dose of Tylenol to keep the pain down enough so I can cough with little pain. I'm wondering if I'm overdoing things during the day when I'm not hurting and then injuring something in my sternum. Has anyone else had issues with prolonged use of medication?

Rose Madura David, you just had a major surgery. Please listen to your body. Slow and steady wins this race. Continue to use your spirometer and any progress is good progress. Are your lungs better today than last week? Regarding pain, you need to stay ahead of the pain. It may be advisable to take a narcotic once a day or so to help with the Tylenol. You may want to call the cardiologist to get his opinion. Please keep us posted. God bless you.

STEPHEN MORRIS I was sort of the opposite...I didn't take the pain medication as I knew how addictive they can be and honestly, when I took them I didn't notice any difference in the pain. But yes..it hurts like hell. I think I was close to a year where I didn't have pain ( laying a certain way in bed) If I noticed a difference, I definitely would have taken the meds.

This is day 5 now. I finally had my first bowel movement a day and a half ago. That made me feel so much better to get that part done. My stomach had been hurting that night. The last couple days the only issue I'm having is food is not very appealing, and my heart rate is in the 100-110 range. Anybody else have issue with their heart rate being high? Blood pressure, oxygen, and other things are fairly normal. Since I haven't been eating very well my nutrients have been a little low which they have been replacing with supplements. Energy has been a bit low mainly due to the higher heart rate. I am walking three times a day and using my incentive spirometer. My pulmonary valve was replaced good and my tricuspid valve was repaired fairly well. I feel like I'm very close to being on the right track. They ate discharging me tomorrow even with the heart rate.

Rita Savelis Typically one is prescribed betablockers after heart surgery to slow the heart rate down and give one's heart a break after what it's been through. I can't imagine one's energy being anything but low in the days/weeks following surgery! I was exhausted. It's so very very early for you. Let your body heal. Take care.

Susan Lynn David - You look marvelous! Don't worry about the elevated heart rate - they wouldn't release you if there was the slightest concern. As Rita said, they may prescribe a beta blocker that will bring that number down. As far as eating goes, eat whatever you like - I only craved fruit and ate a ton of it in the hospital. You'll figure out what works for you over the next week or two. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Day one in the ICU. It's 7:00 in the morning after my surgery. I'm in some decent pain in the chest but mainly when I breathe deep. Thought the tube out after about 4 hours of waiting. It came out easy. I've been super groggy. It's hard for me to focus my eyes. For some reason I can't read very easy. I've been sleeping like a log since I woke up. All I want to do is sleep

Thomas Brusstar Great work! Thanks for taking the time to give an update. I found the pain went waaaaay down once they pulled the drainage tubes from under my rib cage. By 48 hours post surgery I found regular Tylenol adequate for the pain. Get some rest. Sleeping is good!

So here's the deal. I am a night owl. I prefer staying up until midnight before going to bed, then sleeping until 10:00 the next morning on weekends. I am not a morning person! My surgery this Thursday, is scheduled for 7:15 a.m. I need to be at the hospital 2 hours before surgery time. I also have to get up to take my meds and shower 2 hours before I get to the hospital. That means I need to be up at 3:00 a.m. Thursday morning! I don't know how I'm going to get any real sleep that night. Did any of you Heart Warriors have any issues getting any rest the night before your surgery, especially if your surgery was early in the morning?

Andy Teel I didn't get any real sleep the night before. It didn't really matter because you are put to sleep for the surgery and get ready for a lot of laying around during recovery. I have been home a couple of weeks and even though I get out and walk around the neighborhood I find my body telling me to rest here in recovery and as active as I was previously I just decided I am going to listen to my body and let it guide me through recovery. I'll be back out logging the miles on my runs at the right time. Good lick on you surgery. You are going to do great. The first 36 hrs are a challenge and the chest tube is tough but once it comes out life gets way better...
Grace & Peace
Andrew Dial Most of these heart surgeries, especially full sternotomy… are early in the morning like that. Surgeries take 5, 6, 7 hours +, so they have to start early.
If I were you, I’d try and take the remainder of the nights and re-train your sleep habit. Try and go to bed early every night.

You are going to be asleep during the entire thing, and when you wake up, it will be time to focus on recovery. There is nothing to worry about and you will do great :)

Rose Madura My doctor had me admitted the night before the surgery. They had a cot/bed in the room for my husband. Apparently, I slept that night and he didn't. 🤷 I would not worry about it. If you are up all night, you'll have plenty of time afterwards to catch up on your sleep. Godspeed.

Rita Savelis Surgery almost always takes place in the morning. I spent the night before surgery at hospital. It's hard to sleep anywhere, but when in hospital the nurses get you up and ready. It's okay if you stay up all night at home the night before surgery. Being rested is not necessary. All you have to do is showup. You'll be exhausted afterwards whether or not you got any sleep the night before. Take care.
