Has anyone experienced depression post-surgery? I felt emotionally awesome for the first 2-3 months. Then, I began getting "sad" again (I was previously on Welbutrin). Talked with my PCP and she agreed to put me back on Welbutrin beginner dose (150mg). That's been a month and I'm feeling very frightened. Yesterday and today, I have had thoughts of suicide just come out of NOWHERE! Literally. Has anyone dealt with this type of thing post-surgery?
I have called my cardiologist for a referral to a psychiatrist who works with heart surgery patients. I'm waiting on a call with him. I have NEVER had these sorts of thoughts before.

Klara Čičić Dear Daphne, I just had my surgery so I didn't have those emotions (yet). I've read that cardiac depression is a real thing and it is acctually very often. I just wanted to say that you are very smart and brave for seeking help! You are doing the right thing. If you have those black thoughts again you could immediately go to ER. In Croatia we have 'psychiatry ER' (basically one of the few emergencies in psychiatry is 'having suicidal thoughts'). Then they admit you and take good care of you and seek to solve a problem, find a better medication perhaps.... Please hang in there, heart warrior. We are all here for you. I am sure there are plenty with similar problem.

Susan Lynn Daphne - You are brave and self-aware. Depression after heart surgery is common and I'm not sure anyone can put definitive time parameters on onset or duration. Recognizing that you're having these feelings gives you an opportunity to have them addressed. We tend to spend more time talking about physical symptoms after OHS, but the mental impact is very real. You don't have to endure post-operative depression and, hopefully, your cardiologist will recommend someone who can resolve your issue. Please keep us posted on your progress. I have no doubt your fearlessness in sharing your story is helping others on this site who are walking the same path.

Phyllis Petersen My first surgery as an adult was on my little toe and I was shocked by the depression that came on suddenly afterwards. When I researched it, I found out depression was common after any surgery. I'm glad you're being proactive about getting help and hope that this passes quickly.
