GOOD news! So I made a none heart surgery post a few weeks ago. I had cysts on my pancreas and they did a biopsy because of some bad signs on blood work. Hi enzymes and other stuff. When they went in the cysts were gone. Thank God the procedure was none invasive last thing I need is another scar. Dr. said it happens some cysts are normal on a lot of people.
I am so glad and good luck to all of you recovering and getting ready to go through surgery.

Anyone have trouble losing weight after surgery? I was in pretty good physical shape at 48 prior to my Mitral valve repair in 2016, 22 months ago. It's like my metabolism just shut down. This is even though I am very active. I weight train 5 days a week like I always have just not as heavy and I still do cardio 4 days a week. I have even been doing intermittent fasting 16/8 5 days a week and still can't seem to lose weight. I am being tested for thyroid and other hormone issues. I know trivial to what most of us go through but I am trying to live longer. My diet is good 90% of the time.

Susan Rush Dan, I am SO glad you posted this story. I am not nearly as active as you are, but I have had a great deal of trouble trying to maintain the weight I was before surgery. In fact I would give anything to lose the 15 pounds I have put on in the last 6 months since my surgery. My doctors tell me I am imagining that it is harder to lose weight. At least now I don't feel like I am crazy.

Kevin Shackelford Hey Dan, although I have been extremely active I am struggling too. I attribute it to swapping muscle for fat. But It has been extremely slow going. Would be interested if there are any studies on this.

Dan Marcantel Thanks all. Now I don't feel like I am crazy. Finding research on anything post heart surgery that seems out of the normal is like a needle in a haystack. I am still a pretty muscular guy just carrying more BF than I ever have. My new doc did blood test everything looked ok. I do have low testosterone which I am now doing a low dose every 2 weeks. My cardiologist said it was fine as long as I give blood every 8 weeks and do regular blood work. I also have the option to do bioidentical hormone replacement. New doc says it is just now I am 50 and could be some changes based on the surgery. I am almost 2 years out so I was confused.

Still not happy with my workouts and some other small things to work on but I do feel great.
I did get kind of nervous moved to Austin last August and had to go to a new clinic, Austin Heart.
The medical terminology is completely different, some of their words scared me so I sent their test results to my old surgeon back at Mayo. He said everything was still perfect and it was just the way they worded it. The doc at Austin heart said the same thing that everything was fine, and they just used more "blunt words".
Anyway, hope everyone is doing well that used to visit here and if your surgery is coming up just know it gets better.

It's not so painful I can't take it just more aggravating. I am 14 months out I though this would be gone by now. It just feels tight and pinched. It itches still too even though completely healed.

Lilly Black Dan, it took a long time for me too. I used gel ice packs, and Neosporin with pain reliever for pain and discomfort. Today, I just use coconut oil, as it is almost 3 yrs post-OHS for me. In addition, I had very deep tissue pain surrounding the sternum, which I used an infrared heat lamp massager. All of these 3 things were extremely helpful. I tried Mederma, and broke out in a rash, so the over-the-counter scar medications did not work for me. Today I am free and clear of pain. I can actually wear jewelry around my neck as well....something I could not do for many years! there is light at the end of the tunnel. :)

Lilly Black Dan I freaked when I read the letter too! But fear in general is debilitating. Quite common for people who have had heart surgery. Every thing I feel or hear or read about, I fear it's related to my heart. PTSD was a factor as well but I'm doing better with this as time passes because I'm completely healed and out of the woods. Nonetheless it creeps up on me now and then. I managed the nerve pain with the infrared heat lamp. Every night while I was watching tv or reading I would give myself a treatment for at least 25 minutes. 99% of the nerve pain is gone. My sternum took approximately 2 years to heal. Hope you feel better, Dan!✌️🤞

2 weeks ago August 3rd was the 1 year anniversary of my Mitral valve repair. My wife and I talked about this around noon that day agreeing I was out of the woods and sort of celebrating. Around 7:00 PM my wife called and said her mother passed away. She had spent the last month at her bedside in hospice. What a coincidence that we can celebrate one life event and mourn another hours later.

Rita Savelis Oh, yes, I hear you Dan. I am more than 2 years after OHS and still feel a sort of discomfort in that area (and especially after doing something strenuous, or when I am tired).
I was under the misconception after OHS that at some point I would no longer feel my sternum...
But I am often very aware of this area. It's not pain, it's just an awareness/ a discomfort.
Ultimately it's hard for one's body to really forget OHS...
Take care Dan.

Hi Adam and everyone place looks a lot different than when I started posting April 2016.
I don't see the old gang I signed up with and post with anymore . Anyway had Mitral Valve repair 8 months ago and had my last post op echo a week ago. 100% repair no leakage at all only concern now is cholesterol was a little high but that can be controlled.
I bailed on the Cardiac rehab and wish I would not have so do it if you can. I did everything on my own but I feel great pretty close to being normal in the gym and in life. I was one of the lucky ones I only had minimal complications like a small infection in my groin incision but was quickly overcome with antibiotics.
My message to anyone going through this now or near future is stay Positive. Do your research on the facility you choose and the surgeon and his team.
Mayo here in AZ was fantastic and highly rated for a reason. If you need a valve repair look up Dr. Patrick De Valeria. He does not market himself like a lot of other surgeons but he is highly respected and touted as one of the best valve guys around. He prefers minimally invasive when he can and he is a whiz at it I know.
Just checking in best of luck to everyone.

Phyllis Petersen It's always good to hear success stories! Did he go in from the side? I wound up travelling out to Cleveland to have robotic repair in October. So far so good. I did have a small issue with the incision for the robot: it split open and became inflamed. It was a pain to treat and took a good while to fill in, but healed beautifully in the end. I just finished cardiac rehab phase 2 at Banner UMC in Tucson and will be doing phase 3 (basically working out on your own at their facility and going on the monitors once a month for 3 months.
