Hi Everyone, I am about to complete 3 years of my surgery; still using Metropolol 25mg Succ, and I think it does impact your mood and drive (I read the other day that it impacts your adrenaline). I also learned that I haven’t had any AFIB (I originally had flutter after surgery and 3 months after), although the iWatch keeps saying I have 20-30% AFIB - my doctor put a monitor and said that I has having PACs and PVC but no AFIB. I thought I would share this with the community. I also hope to get off Metoprolol someday. Cheers Carlos

Anna Ma I want to get rid of metoprolol too. My cardiologist said I will have it for life. But I don’t have high bp, instead I have low bp. I’m three months post op, my hr is around 75 when sitting. I don’t have afib. If my hr gets even lower in the future, I wonder if I can ask again to get rid of the metoprolol. I don’t quite understand the benefits other than lower bp and hr.

Anna Ma Thank you Valerie! I don’t have afib, I wonder if I will be safely out of woods without it.

Suelynn Hanegraaf I found that metropolol contributed to low energy and BP following both of my aortic valve replacements. Thankfully, my cardiologists allowed me to stop - 7 months after my first SAVR; just two weeks after my second SAVR. I’m a big believer of second or third opinions.

When I first left the hospital there was not much instruction on how to monitor yourself. They don't even tell you to take your pressure off or to look at your HB. I borrowed the iWatch from my son who allowed me to detect the HB at 140s when I had my first flutter incident 2 weeks after surgery. Since then I also purchased an Oura ring which provides me info about my sleep etc. I think a blog post of useful wearables would be a good thing for people.

General question for those who had Aortic valve replacement a few years back; I also had Aortic root repair. Has anyone gotten clear of not taking any medications. Like Metoprolol? or you still taking your medications years after surgery. I just had mine on October 13, 2021.

Rose Madura Hi Carlos. I'm still taking Metropol Succ once a day (25 mg] which is time released. I dont have any issues with taking it. I had my surgery 5 years ago. At some point, I may be taken off of it but since I have no major side effects, I'll take it as long as necessary. Hope this helps.

Rita Savelis I asked to be taken off of betablockers (after a year)- otherwise I think the doctors would have just continued, as they do. I used to bring up meds at every appt to ask if/why I had to take each med; Betablockers slow you down (which is what your heart needs to give itself a break after surgery) but this can be difficult for some. As soon as I stopped betablockers my depression lifted.

Marie Myers I am still on a beta blocker also, and a statin since I had a lot of cholesterol in my right carotid that was found on the preop testing. The right carotid has since improved.

Susan Lynn I was on Metoprolol and off of it within a year because I asked about the continuing need for it. Unfortunately, I developed PACs two years after surgery and I'm back on extended release and it is working. As others have stated, it's a good idea to be an informed patient and question the need for your prescriptions and dosages. Best of luck to you!

Carlos Alonso thanks for all the comments, I am also on Metropol Succ 25mg. I also take Eloquis because I had a "flutter" event on April 1 this year almost 6 months after surgery. But apart from that I feel great, I play pickleball 4 times a week and my heartbeat at nights is in the 50s. I think the surgeon always told me that it takes a full year to be back at 100%. I am always wondering if the flutter event was a fluke (as I was exposed to someone with Covid but I never tested positive); and perhaps I won't have any more events.
