About Me (In My Own Words)
I am 63, in great shape, no symptoms; but at my last colonoscopy my EKG showed a irregular heart beat. My colonoscopy was cancelled. The following week after an Echocardiogram my cardiologist inform me that I had a 'leak' on my aortic valve. Further studies show an enlarged root. I had my surgery (after a 2nd opinion) on October 13th, by a great surgeon Dr Irving David, he replaced the valve and also part of the aorta root. I was walking the 2nd day and spent 6 days at the hospital. The 2nd day I had an Afib event that scared me more than the surgery. But I recover that night after medicine. Around the 19th day after surgery I developed Atrial flutter, but now this is also gone. I had never had taken any medicines and I am taking now 5 meds. Hope to eventually not require them. I am more than glad to share my story with people if it can help. I do have a few questions still in my mind:
- What caused this? my father had Mitral valve relapsed but never had to do surgery and died from other causes in the his late 80's. Doctor said something about a protein deficiency i.e. genetics. But this is still one of my open questions.
- Given the question above, is there something to do or change to ensure this doesn't happen again?
- How long to get rid of the medicines, I am on anticoagulant (because of Atrial flutter), Valsatran, Metropolol, Diogenix, Aminadore, (spelling may be incorrect) - and also Cholesterol medicine (even though my heart had not blockages).
regards to all, I really feel for people going through this experience and generally just being at a hospital with all the protocols to being woken in the early morning to do test rather than letting you sleep.
