Steve Farthing Yes, standard procedure. You probably gained 15lbs of fluid added during valve surgery and may be on a diuretic now to work it off. They told me once the valve leakage is fixed, the heart gets 'floppy' and needs extra fluid to compensate for the fluid 'loss' of no leakage so it has something to push against. Ask your doc when the excess fluid will be gone.
Dan Baltazor Yes, a lot in fact. But it was resolved a few days after being home. Elevated my feet.

Barbara Blackwell A very belated Thank You to those of you who responded to my question about leg/thigh swelling!! It has all settled now and is completely gone. It was 4 weeks ago today (Dec 20) that I had my surgery. Both the Mitral Valve and the Tricuspid Valve were "repaired"....... This was the second go round for the Mitral Valve, but the surgeon felt it was the better option so I have placed my trust and confidence in him. He's done over 6000 surgeries in 30 years and valve repair is really his forte. Hope everyone is feeling good and recuperating beautifully. I am coming along just fine.....try to get out a little every day for a 20-30 minute walk depending on weather. Feel a little "sting-y" on parts of my incision. Just very, very tender for some reason. Anyone else feel that?? Using BioOil on it twice a day as suggested by my GPs office. Follow up with surgeon is 1st week of February. God bless all.....❤️

Good morning everyone. Well, this is the BIG week! So many of you have been there and are on Recovery Road right now, and many of us are still waiting for the big day. Thursday is it for me....feeling good, and anxious to get in, get it done, and start healing. I must apologize as I may have missed replying to several of you who sent me lovely supportive messages when my date was announced and I posted it. Please know every message was lovingly read and appreciated!! I do have a quick question......for those of you who have HAD your surgeries, any little tips or ideas/suggestions about things you've figured out to help make recovery a bit smoother......I.e. I read someplace about placing a small pillow on your chest under the seatbelt while in the car.....what about at home or anything special I need to take to the hospital?? Any input, comments, suggestions you've figured out would be appreciated. And a huge Thank You in advance to all......so much still to do with Christtmas right around the corner!! Hugs and Thank You! ❤️❤️

Marie Myers I found that a shower seat was really helpful for me. I was exhausted for about 2 weeks, and the shower seat made showering much easier. Also recommend renting an electric recliner. I had one for a month, and it made it easy to get up and down myself without help. It was also great for sleeping, since I could not lay flat comfortably for weeks. I was told to ride in the back seat for a month to avoid the possibility of an airbag deployment. After that, I wedged my heart pillow between me and the seatbelt when in the car. Lastly, I listened to relaxing UTube videos, especially at night if I could not sleep. Best wishes for a smooth journey!

Diane Maher Like Marie, I too was extremely exhausted and weak for the first month ....used a shower chair and slept in my rental electric recliner for a month....an absolute life saver for me. Unlike many, I had no problem with being able to sleep during my recovery. My problem was staying awake🙂. Also a weigh scale and blood pressure machine were a necessity. Sending many best wishes and look forward to your update when you can.❤️

Bonnie Stone-Hope Hi Barbara,
Your surgery date is the same as mine last year😀
My tips are as follows:
1) Take a colourful pashmina to drape around your shoulders while connected to all those tubes. Looks pretty, keeps you warm and easy to remove when getting out of bed.
1) Facial wipes are very nice as they moisturizer your skin, and feel refreshing.
3) Bring shoes that have a good rubber sole, and slip on easily with Velcro fasteners, if possible. Makes it easy for others to put on you✅
4) Bring cozy, comfy socks while in bed.
5) Bring you cell phone and charger cord so when you are feeling like sending texts, you are ready.
Best wishes for a successful surgery and easy recovery.

Cris Dykeman Ditto to all above! Also, find a sports bra that hooks in the front! So helpful for when you go somewhere that you cant be braless. I used the spray on icy hot on my back (because I could put it on myself). I just posted about the heart hugger. check to see if your hospital gives you one, if not it's worth the purchase. If you haven't already read Adam Pick's book. It helped me have the right mindset postop. Everytime you go walking, be it in the hospital or at home, go a little further each time. You'll do great!

Louanna Miller The one thing I wish I had taken to the hospital was my own pillow. The hospital pillows are so stiff and covered in plastic. I was very warm while in the hospital, even though no one else was. Ha...I kept the AC on 67. Both the bed mattress and pillows are plastic covered for sanitary reasons, so they trap heat and my hair was often sweaty.
Dry Shampoo, face wipes, lip moisturizer and face moisturizer. Anything that pampers you.
I also took socks for in the bed. They had me walk in the hospital provided socks and I did not want to put my feet in the bed with those on after being in the floor. I wee my own socks and just put those over when I was to walk on the floor.

Sara Moyce Hi Barbara! I was so happy that I brought several pairs of pajama bottoms with me, which I wore with the lovely gown....as well as my lightweight bathrobe. Vaseline for the dry lips, and, a sleeping mask as it was sooooo hard to sleep at night in the hospital with the hallway lights blaring into the room. For home ditto on the shower chair and recliner. Best wishes to you tomorrow ❤️

Well, it's been a long wait, but I finally have received my surgery date, and that is Thursday, December 20th. A bit bittersweet being just the week before Christmas, and most likely I will still be in the hospital for Christmas Day and "Boxing Day" (like 2nd Christmas Day here in England). I feel worse for my husband than I do for myself! As everyone is, a bit nervous but more about complications following the op than the actual surgery, oddly enough. I'm sure I'll have the jitters on the guerney as they're wheeling me down the hall! xxxx

Dan Baltazor Barbara, Prayers for Peace for you until surgery. Yes being in the hospital for Christmas does not sound great, but a new heart is a GREAT gift. Louanna is right, it's better to have it sooner than later. I just saw my cardiologist for my first post op appointment and he said he saw the photos of my native valve that the surgeon took. He said that I was lucky because that was a sudden death valve.
And honestly, once you're on the gurney, your surgical team will help you feel more at ease. It's not as bad as your mind paints the picture.

Diane Maher Hopefully you will have an experience similar to mine. The nurse came into the room and once I had changed into a gown, hooked me up to an IV. I don’t remember anything after that. Christmas is such a magical time in London. We spent 6 weeks staying with our son last year before returning home just before Christmas and spent many hours soaking up that Christmas magic.....which could be a wonderful pre-op distraction for you. A visit to St. Paul’s, Westminster Abbey or St. Martens for a Christmas concert might also help with the disappointment of being in hospital on Christmas Day. Very best wishes.

Good morning all. . Thinking of, and praying for everyone in this community, that those of you who are awaiting surgery (like myself) will have a smooth day today with no anxiety, and those of you who are recovering, will know a pain free day, and also notice a step that takes you back to complete health. I am wondering if any of you have had, or know of someone who has, their Mitral Valve Repaired twice - as opposed to Replacement on the 2nd surgery? My valve was originally repaired in 2000 at Cleveland Clinic, and I now need another surgery. Thank you for any input and God Bless. Enjoy a great Labor Day weekend. xx

Valerie Herndon-Vitarella I have had 2 mitral repair surgeries at Cleveland Clinic. The first was 11/28/16 (robotic rt side approach) and the second on 5/14/18 (full sternotomy). The need for re-repair was caused by the annuloplaty ring tearing apart from the mitral valve causing leakage both around and through the previously repaired valve. I did not have any symptoms that this was even happening as it was just caught on an echo in Feb 2018. The surgeon said he would try to repair, but would only do so if he was very confident that he could get a good repair. My last echo in June showed only trivial leakage and I am back to all my normal activities. Has your surgeon told you if another repair is a possibility? I'm sure it depends on the specific reason for your current leak. Please keep us posted. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi all from hot, hot, hot London, England!! I am still awaiting my consultation with the surgeons, so don't have a surgery date just yet for Mitral Valve replacement. I'm hoping no more than 2 months. I do have a question for any of you that have had the same surgery, and if you wouldn't mind sharing, I'm interested to know if you hear the "clicking" sound from a mechanical valve, and if so, how are you finding it to cope with?? Thanks for any light you can shed on this. 💗💗💗

Kelly Stoll Hi Barbara. I have an aortic mechanical valve and heat the "clicking". It sounds almost like the ticking of a second hand on a wind up wrist watch. It seems to be louder when I am dehydrated or when I focus on it. 12 weeks in, I barely hear it anymore. I've heard they can get quieter with time, though mine isn't apparently that loud to start with. Best of luck to you and happy healing.

Willie Radl I received the On-x valve in April this year in the aortic position. In the first 2-3 weeks the tick it was quite noticeable but then started to diminish. I think your brain just adjusts to it. Now, just ~4 mo after surgery I don't even notice it unless someone asks me about it or the room is completely silent. For me it is not an issue at all and at times its almost comforting. I ask a lot of people if they can hear it and I would say as people get into their 50's they can't hear it as well unless they put their ear up to my chest.
As Kelly mentioned it sounds like a wrist watch.

Rita Savelis One notices a sound when the room is very very quiet and still. Everyone's heart (no matter what kind of valve) tends to beat a bit louder and stronger after OHS, and faster for awhile. For some this pounding can be disconcerting.
In general there is a heightened awareness of your heart and how it beats.
I used to put a tiny pillow on my chest (when I was sitting in a quiet room reading) for the feeling of having something between me and the world.
Of all the various side effects and aftereffects of surgery, the sound of my heart ticking is really not an issue.
A clock in the room or my husband snoring is so much worse.
Take care Barbara.
