Scott Ainsworth Hi Audrey, it will get better, it’s not nice and it’s painful but I did find it easier at night using a foam firm wedge to sleep with. I found that laying flat gave me the same pains and as I had pneumonia after my OHS I had breathing issues without the wedge. Take every day as it comes, rest plenty and listen to your body. Prayers for a speedy recovery and trust me, it does get better as the weeks go by. 👏🙏🏼

Marie Myers I remember that pain in the neck well. My neck and shoulders hurt me more than my sternum. It will get better. I wonder if a muscle relaxant would help? You could ask your doc. Hang in there!

Joy Vera Hi Audrey. Yes, the pains do get better with time. With both of my surgeries, I had pain in my lower left ribcage area. I found that putting the corner of a pillow under the painful spot pushed gently against it, provided some support & allowed me to relax & release into that support. You might try different configurations of pillows to see if you can get some firm but comfortable support for your neck & shoulders. A rolled up washcloth or hand towel under the curve in your neck might be something to try along with the pillows. I wish you the best with your recovery.

Meredith Bray It gets better! The back pain is miserable - it's the only thing I even considered pain pills for. My Physical Therapist really saved me when he had me work on my posture. He said that my core muscles had really taken a beating, and I was subconsciously hunching over to protect my chest. I needed to stand up straight - super straight, like I was a president and I had a book on my head. Doing that for just a few minutes made an immediate difference.
He also suggested that when I was resting, to make sure my bowling ball (head!) was supported, along with my shoulders and arms. Your body uses so much energy holding itself up, it doesn't have much left over for healing. Plus, once you figure out what feels good when you are resting, your muscles will relax and you can get some good sleep.
Don't give up! Maybe you can make an appointment for a massage when you feel ready. I had a table massage at about 6 weeks, but I bet I could have handled a soothing chair massage at 3 or 4 weeks, with the right massage therapist.
Hope these suggestions help, I know it's miserable and it feels horrid and like it will never end. It'll feel better soon!

Mike Roskowinski I agree I think it is the beds in the hospital that cause this. I was in so much back and neck pain from my two weeks in the hospital. Feel so much better being home and able to sleep or try to sleep in more comfortable beds and recliners.

Rose Madura Hi Audrey. It will get better. I think the pain I experienced in my shoulders was worse than the incision. A nurse at the hospital explained the position I was in for 7 hours in the operating room so it's no wonder we are sore afterwards. It may take a while, but it will get better. Try a heating pad. That seemed to help me.
