Hi I had heart surgery on April 20 of this year. I recovered well but recently I woke up and noticed that some of my chest pain and sternum pain is back. The right side of my sternum is tender to touch again and my right pec is sore again. I can can still breath deeply with no pain but things like coughing is slightly painful again. All of this had went away but seems to be back. I have no cracking or popping and i feel no wires sticking out so thats good. But should I be worried about this coming back? Has anyone else had pain that came back?

Deena Elani Hi Arie, I wouldn't be worried, given you heart and incision feel fine. Did you do some heavy lifting, cleaning or gardening lately? In other words, might be stretched/strained muscle.

Howard Powders Yes. I had sciatica that I hoped would improve after the surgery but came back as bad as it was before. But, one good thing: I am walking my one mile path 5 minutes faster than before the surgery after 6 weeks post op. So, pros and cons.🤷♂️

Hi guys, glad to find a group out their for valve patients. So a litle bit of background info. Im 18 and had a ohs valve repair 2.5 months ago for my servere aortic regurgitation bicuspud valve. I flew to mt sinai in new york to get it and ultimately it was tough and unexpected but I got through it. Fast forward to now and im back home revovering and im having a couple issues. I began noticing my resting heart rate go up into the 80s a couple hours after I take my metroplol which never happened during recover before. I also started to have some more iregular beats that the Dr called singular PVC'S. These usually happen as my heart rate gets higher. I had a echo done and apparently my EF went down by 8 percent from 58 to 50 since my surgery. My cardiologist says that all of this is normal and is part of recover and said that my valve and heart looked fine . I admit that now im kinda worried because the EF dropped and these symptoms have also arrived too. It is starting to feel like im worrying more in recovery than before the surgery. How was yalls recovery experience like . Did anybody else go through any of the same thing I am. Is this just what I should expect from heart recovery? Any advice would be comforting

George Gardopee Arie: I had both an increase in my rest heart rate and a drop in EF after surgery (mitral and tricuspid repair). If you search the articles that are available on this site I bet you can find information about both after-effects. In my case my rest heart rate improved with cardiac rehab and a short-term increase in the metoprolol dose; it is now back to low 60s. I believe in most cases the EF will improve as your heart recovers from the trauma. About three months after my surgery I did a stress echocardiogram and they saw isolated PVCs, but my cardiologist didn’t think it to be worrisome. I don’t know if my EF has improved yet, but I suspect my next echo will tell. I’m about 8 months post-surgery. the way I look at it, even if my EF has dropped, I’m pretty sure not having the severe leakage more than compensates. Good luck with your recovery.
