Ocular migraines after heart valve replacement: I had very infrequent ocular migraines early in my life. They were very infrequent. However, after AVR in Sept of 2019, they returned and recently have become very frequent. Typically, there exhibit 30 minutes of aura then fade away without headache and I can get 3 or 4 a month. Has anyone had any experience with the affect of AAVR on migraine visual aura?

Herb Greenberg I used to get them several times a year....probably for 40 years. But as my valve worsened I was getting them almost 1x a week. Since my surgery a year ago, I've probably had 3-4. My cardiologist at CC, Brian Griffin, suspected they were/are cause by bits of calcification chipping off and cycling thru the brain. That was his working thesis. I will say here and on other forums I have seen quite a bit of commentary about increased oculars.

Eight weeks post-op and doing great. Pain is almost gone except when I cough or sneeze. My energy level is 90%, and I start cardiac rehab on December 2. I have to say the folks at Cleveland Clinic were fantastic. Everyone was kind, considerate, and the hospital is wonderfully efficient. My surgeon, Dr. Gost Petterrson, came highly recommended by several cardiologists in D.C. and my scar is almost invisible. I also got a Relias Inspira valve. Thanks to evryone on the blog for their support.

Alan Gottlieb Yes. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Petterrson and the care I received at Cleveland Clinic. The institution is truly amazing. From the moment we entered the hospital to the day we went home, we experienced a superb level of kindness and professionalism. Not only does the institution care for the patient. They support the family as well and make the whole experience as easy as humanly possible.

Recovery is slow but progressing. I am walking 5-6 city blocks each day. Biggest complaints are pain around the incision and weekly migrane attacks, mostly aura with little or no headache. I had these earlier in life, around 3 to 4 each year and the surgery seems to have brought them back. I am told that the increased blood flow to the brain might be responsible and have read about others with this problem. All in all, I am doing pretty well and am very thankful. I also found that Cleveland Clinic has a 24 hour nurse hotline to answer any questions which is very helpful. Thanks to all of you for your continued support.

Thomas Brusstar I have way more ocular migraine after my valve surgery too. One of the other posters here says he had the problem and absolutely solved the problem by hydrating a lot with extra electrolytes. Hi Lyte is one supplement to add to water he uses. I’m trying that. It has not absolutely prevented it for me, as I still had one ocular migraine occurrence using it, but I am now going to try cutting down on caffeine also. Sometimes I’ll have 3 cups in the morning, and there’s some evidence too much can trigger migraines. It doesn’t lead to headaches for me, but the visual disturbances are just disconcerting. So hopefully slightly less coffee in the am plus more hydration will help. It’s prevented them for a week or ten days so far for me, and they had been arising maybe 1-2 a week.

Not only did I have one of the top surgeons, Dr. Gosta Petterson, but the entire team was superb. I am so glad I came to Cleveland Clinic. These folks are masters at what they do. I also received one of the new Edwards Relias Inspira valves which not only has unique calcification resistance but is TAVR ready should it ever need to be replaced. I look forward to a successful recovery and appreciate the opportunity the CC folks have given me to enjoy the rest of a full life. Thanks to all of you for your support. 4 Day to go. I'll be having my aortic valve replaced at Cleveland Clinic. I still have no symptoms, but the valve area is down to 1.0 cm2 and I have severe AR. Dr. Gost Petterrson is the surgeon. It's been 18 years of watchful waiting with ultrasounds every six months or so. I'm 68 and the Drs say there will never be a better time to get this done. The aortic route is normal size, and I have no other history of heart problems. Will have a Relias Inspira valve and hoping that this will be the only heat surgery I will need. This is all very scary, but I know Petterson and the Cleveland Clinic are the best bet. Any good wishes welcome.

Joey Hardee Hey Alan. You are having this done in a great center with a great surgeon. You will do very well. I did the Edwards Inspiris Resilia valve simply because I did not want to be on blood thinners. I'm 55 and know this means I will likely need a second procedure down the line whether that be a TAVR or a re-op when this one starts to deteriorate. I just have faith this one will last a while and God will see me through whatever is next. Incredibly to me, I am already 3 months post op and feel great. I was having some symptoms pre-op and they are either gone or markedly improved. I am thrilled with my progress to date. It has been said but bears repeating because it is so true.....the waiting is the hardest part. Prayers for you, Alan.

tim miller Alan, I can tell you first hand that the Cleveland Clinic is the best place to be. I’m 7 weeks out and my surgery did not go as planned, you can read my updates for specifics. My surgeon was Eric Roselli and he was awesome! His team was awesome! But those ICU nurses who care for you after surgery are beyond great. You are in very good hands so rest assured you have put yourself in the best place. That for me was so important and relieved me of a lot of worries. I kept telling myself “ your in the best place with the best people to care for you” . I changed my valve choice on the table during the huddle as I wanted the valve that would give me the chance of not having to do this again, I went with the On-X mechanical valve.
We will keep you in our prayers and update us when you can.

Mark Jaycox Hi Alan, I also was born with a bi-cuspid valve but did not know it until I saw a cardiologist at the age of 55. I took my doctors advice and went and saw a cardiologist because my dad passed at 57 and I figured with a family history it was probably a good idea. Fast forward 2 years and many, many tests later I had my surgery last December. I had AVR at Swedish in Seattle and I chose the Edwards Resillia cow valve. It's been 8 months and I feel great. This website was a godsend leading up to the surgery so keep us updated and before you know it you'll be a fellow Heart Warrior.
