Franklin Wyrick I agree, that only her doctor can determine when surgery is needed. I was born with BAV and it was discovered when I was 13. At 66 I finally was advised that I needed surgery. Your girlfriend needs to have her heart checked at least yearly to keep track of any changes. Good luck to you both.
Aayush Ambastha Thank you so much guys. It is great to have you
My girlfriend feels uncomfortable talking about BAV. Can you guys help me out? i wanna know that if surgery will be successful.

Steven Dean From the perspective of the medical community, aortic valve replacement is pretty "routine." I think the key is finding a good hospital and a good surgeon.

Maureen Breault You go through a lot of emotions while considering and planning surgery. Confidence in your surgeon and aftercare is key and for me, being educated on all aspects helped me have a sense of control. Obviously, once you enter the surgery suite that ends. I like to be a partner in managing my health with my providers; I've done everything I need to do; given them the best I can be to work on.
I highly recommend Adam's book; it has a chapter on the caregiver as well as a wealth of information to help calm you're fears.

Maureen Breault My success story; 9 weeks out and I'm back to working out regularly, I took my first indoor cycle class yesterday and feel terrific. I'm a fitness instructor anxious to get back to work and am getting back the confidence to teach classes again. My incision is fading day by day but it's my badge of honor!

Lilly Black Aayush, it is okay to be scared. We all went through the fear; fear of what we will find out, fear of the surgery, the outcome, and the recovery. Let your girlfriend know that most people do much better after the surgery. I have had 2 surgeries; the first one was to fix the aneurysm caused by the BAV and the second to replace the diseased Aortic valve with a Bovine valve. I never felt better in my life after having my second surgery. There is fear, but mostly there is hope, and there are great surgeons out there. My surgeon is in the Santa Monica, CA area and he is fantastic! Very gentle, caring and has been taking care of patients for over 30 years. I highly recommend him! He still keeps in touch with me. I love him! He save my life, and many, many others. You are a wonderful man for reaching out for your girlfriend! I wish you and her the best outcome. Let me know if you have any questions.

Rita Savelis Your girlfriend is experiencing this is in her own way. Perhaps her own way is not talking about it.
You, as the caregiver, have a different experience and different needs.
Perhaps just let her know that you are there for her and willing to listen if she needs to talk.
Surgeries are successful these days, but there is anxiety pre and post surgery and recovery can be a long and tiring journey.
Take care Aayush.
Adam Pick Wonderful thoughts Maureen, Lilly and Rita! Thanks so much for supporting Aayush and his girlfriend!

Steven Dean Just to add, this is obviously not routine for the patient or their family, but it is comforting to know that the surgery is happening all the time and has been happening for years (and is only getting better). One thing I find really helpful is to have someone with me at the bigger medical appointments because I often get a little woozy, forget to ask questions or really pay attention.
