Dwight Miller Hi Jane, i just had my aortic valve replaced on Nov 2nd. I am 49. I had been monitored annually for the last 10 years and I was ready to get this done. I stayed positive staying busy and talking about it a lot with family and friends.
My wife is a critical care ICU nurse so I too had a pretty good idea of what to expect and possible outcomes. I also hated the idea of being dependent on others during recovery but I had my support team in place prior to surgery. My surgery went very well, I was in ICU for 2 days, up and walking on the second day. 3 days on telemetry pretty much independant while there. I have been home 2 weeks and still very independant not needing much from my support team. The Dr. Released me to drive 3 days ago provided I am not on any narcotic pain meds (I have not used after coming home). I feel great, I tend to get short of breath and tired ocassionally but I expected that with open heart surgury. I hope my recovery continues to go smooth, and hope your experience is as positive as mine has been.

Jane Wright Thanks, Dwight, for the words of encouragement and for sharing your story. I am happy to hear that your recovery is going so well - especially how quickly you have been able to be pretty independent. My surgery is on Tuesday 11/22. Trying my best to stay calm and fill my head with positive thoughts.

Corey Sines Jane, almost two weeks out from mitral rerepair. Doing pretty good overall. I think I'm perhaps even a little ahead of the last repair. It can be so scary knowing all the negative possibilities especially as a nurse having seen many first hand. But you also know the odds, and that they are in your favor. It can be blessing to know symptoms and signs, it can help you advocate for what is needed during recovery. Best of luck and sending prayers.
