You got it Teegan! Prayers your way. It takes some patience with the recovery process. I know it may seem like forever, but you will be okay., in fact stronger than you were before. You're really young and will heal so much faster than most of us. Just you see. BTW- you look FAB in this video. Great posture too.

Deena Z Yep, you got it. I remember the Physician Assistant telling me it was going to really hurt when my chest tubes were being removed and to brace for it. I felt barely nothing. I read that younger persons have more pain, because there is more muscle, and I guess also nerves to create pain. Finally, there is a good side for being older!

That said, the up side is that you will heal way faster.

It took me 14 months to stop being really tired.

LOUIS MARTINEZ Hi Teegan, sorry late reply as I've been giving myself time for healing. So they discharged me Nov 1st. Should have been Oct 30th one of the surgery areas where the tubes drained was leaking so they decided to keep me the 31st and still leaking they did send me home with a bag of DIY bandages. The late called me and thought I should come back for Echo Cardio to rule out any blood around heart. They also put me on antibiotics because couple days before discharge the area on my left wrist that they had the main IV was swallen and tender. At home it did start to ooze after first shower. Still on the antibiotics. Slowly feeling improvement each day.

Hi Teegan- glad you did your research! I had my mitral valve repaired in January 2022 at the Cleveland clinic by Dr. Daniel Burns (works with Dr. Gillinov). They are awesome and everyone at the CC was great! I'm a nurse and I was very impressed. I too had anxiety. Dr. Burns nicely and honestly spelled out my surgical plans. I had plan A (robotic repair), plan B (sternotomy repair), plan C (sternotomy with valve replacement - having to decide whether mechanical valve or animal valve). They wouldn't truly know till they got in. When I woke up in ICU, my first question was - what did they do? Luckily I had the robotic repair. They very much focus on what is best for each individual patient. You are in good hands. Let me know if you have any questions and I will try to answer. Laura

Oh Teegan I am with you. We both have the same surgery date. I will be in Vancouver Canada having my Heart Valve replacement and you will be having your. Mine was suppose to be on the 13th but Surgeon got COVID and they cancelled. They just called me this morning with new date. I know your issue is but different but know I wish you well and a happy healthy recovering all around. A lot to go through so young. Girl we are here for you.

Hi Teegan, I had a mitral valve repair and two surgeons said they could repair it and the third wanted to replace it. They ought to have given you a reason for why a repair is uncertain. For me, I had severe calcification on my annular ring, so that is why all three of the surgeons told me a sternum cut was the only way to go. The calcification is also why one surgeon didn't what to repair it; took more skills to do the repair over a replacement. I would ask the "why", so you can understand the surgeons' logic. Will it make a difference in what is ultimately done with your valve during surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, no. -- But I prefer to understand what is going on with my heart. Either way, know you will be okay. Low risk surgery compared to 15 plus years ago. Congrats on the engagement!

Hello Teegan. I'm sorry for all the uncertainty surrounding your upcoming surgery. I did not do any of the preparation activities you wrote about. I really didn't have time. I think you'll be just fine! A sternotomy is the gold standard they say, and I can bet that they will leave as tiny of a scar as possible! Keep yourself busy in the meantime. I tried to stay away from the videos of the proceedure because it made me think too much and get into psychological upheaval. Be at peace! The sternotomy gives the surgeons more options to make the right decisions once they see what's going on. My prayers will be focused on the perfect decision and a successful procedure!!!
