Hi Scott, Congratulations, everyday is a blessing. I may have written about ocular migraines before, but I have experienced them even before my heart surgery 9 years ago. They last 20 minutes. They can be triggered by certain foods, like , chocolate, aged cheese, caffeine, and wine. Caffeine is a big one for me, and I avoid it like the plague. I do not get the headache, but colored prisms march across my eyes and I cannot drive or read for 20 minutes. As Adam says, keep on ticking.

Amy Dorsey I had an ocular migraine for the first time a few weeks ago. I never knew you could get a migraine with no pain! Mine lasted 20-30 minutes as well. Thanks for posting this! I was wondering what could cause that to happen. Besides my recent experience I only had migraine with auora one time WITH the headache. It was strange just having the vibrating colored prisms. Glad there was no headache with it! My migraines usually last several hours.

Jean Raber Yeah, I get them, and I'm pre-op. Dark choc, espresso, stress are triggers, but sometimes they come out of nowhere. I had a blinger in the middle of teaching a class one time. That was fun. I managed to fake it even though the aura blocked out half my vision.

Scott, Your journal is very helpful to me as I embark on this journey to OHS. I too am going in for MV repair with a 90% expectation of repair instead of replacement. According to the doc it is a P2 chordae rupture which can be repaired. Unfortunately after years of leaking I now have an atrium that is too big which put me into AFIB so I am looking at a valve repair and a MAZE procedure. That pretty much eliminates the minimally invasive approach as the MAZE success rate is much better with full access. Hearing you got back to running is inspiring for me. I am a swimmer, but sounds like I could get back in the water after a couple of months. Thanks for sharing all of your ups and downs..

Bravo! Your sharings are great to have. What a "journey" (over used word, but fits I believe). You are inspirational to other heart patients and to parents like us. As I may have mentioned our youngest daughter donated 60% of her liver to her husband saving his life. That was April 2014. On Dec 6 they both hiked "Ajax" mountain in Aspen AT NIGHT! We are now supporters of Chris Klug Foundation promoting organ and tissue donations. The other good news (still early) God has blessed me with a candidate to take over my "business" (practice) as I shut down my career training activities Dec 2013. Good to hear you are doing so good. I am too except for Arthur in my right knee. Get the heart fixed then the knee starts acting up. I just try and keep going, for the most part it is ok. I still have a little soreness also. Guess I will have it the rest of my life. If it gets to annoying I just take a Tramodol and it helps. Anyway you take care.

Hi Scott, So glad you are doing okay, but you still have the ocular migraines. Mine are less frequent, but all I have to do is have a cup of regular coffee, or a chocolate chip cookie, and either that evening or the next morning the prisms go dancing across my eyes for 20 minutes. (also ages cheese) So.............if you are having caffeine, skip it for a while or have decaf, and see if it helps.

Glad to hear you are doing so well. I was right behind you in surgery, and watched your journal for tips how to survive! I also feel great, scars are faded (the ones they drilled thru the breast are kinda ugly, but who cares) and also devote little time to thinking about that part of my life. I feel that it can be set aside now, and move on, unless something happens to remind me. Best of luck and let us know how the echo is!

Scott, glad you are doing good. I am 22 months out and doing pretty good as well. Still have nucience incision pain a little. I just keep stretching and it helps. I still go to the YMCA for swimming and Silver Sneakers. When I miss a week boy do I know it. Keep doing good until later.

Hi Scott, So glad you are doing well and your eyes are behaving. My surgery for replacement of the aortic valve was in 2009, so my piggy is 5 yrs. old. I do get ocular migraines, no pain, just prisms dancing across my eyes, but it happens with certain foods. (aged cheese, certain chocolate, wine, and caffeine is a sure bet) Keep well and thanks for the update. Heading to HSS in NYC for hip surgery for my husband.

Hi Scott, I followed your posts closely as I was 6 weeks behind you in surgery and watched your progress. I also feel great, not as active as you are but swim and walk a lot. I fell 6 months after surgery and broke 5 bones, so my physical recovery was delayed. Much better now. Had an ocular migraine yesterday but first one in months at first, had them daily, so much improved. Thanks for posting!

I live for my time at the Y and know that I am keeping my body in good shape. I am coming up on my five year anniversary of my "piggy valve" and I am 78 and feeling good. Keep up the good work.

Thanks to you and your brother for sharing. The "you need heart surgery" was a big surprise to me. I am totally without symptoms and have great EF, low blood pressure, etc. which I attribute to exercise. I have been told I have a very large heart and severe regurgitation. As a result, I have seen three specialists and received 3 very different opinions-do nothing, surgery yesterday and maybe. I have opted to do something and am scheduled for robotic repair in February. Friends and family are shocked(and to some degree less supportive) because I seem so healthy. Like you I have done lots of research and feel satisfied with my choice. This does not, however, lessen the fear (small f) and anxiety and wondered if you would share what your greatest surprise was (good or bad), and your best single piece of advice for active asymtomatic patients.

Hi, Scott! I am 11 months out from my Mitral Valve Repair and since my surgery, I have had the occular migraines, too. I will notice a small blind spot in my vision and over about 15 minutes it expands with zig zags until it is out of my field of vision. I don\'t get a headache with them. I did have them more often right after surgery then I do now. It\'s interesting to see how many people experience this! I still haven\'t heard of the cause but it must be related to the surgery somehow! Gina

Hey Scott, Well reading your post got me thinking. In my left eye I have a little black spot that kinda floats around. I did have some little fine lines but they have gone, but the black spot still remains. Sometimes my eyes get a little blurry, thought it might just be getting tired using them. I always thought it was from that first dreaded sneeze.. It seems like we trade one thing for another,,but it will get better. Take care LInda H and Elsie AVR 9/19/12

Hi Scott, My migraines have actually improved since I had my surgery but I have had visual problems such as floaters in my peripheral vision and some days I have vision issues seeing up close. I was told to expect some of these problems as a result of being on the heart-lung bypass machine for over 5 hours. The floaters have greatly improved now that I am almost 7 weeks out. Now your lucky that you didn\'t get the foggy brain and its not due to pain meds. Some days are better than others but I hate struggling to think of a word and get it out of my mouth. Again, most days are better than others. Take care and I hope things improve for you. Michelle W

Hi Scott, Glad to keep getting your updates. I am sorry for your complications, i don\'t like hearing about these side effects as I have been putting off surgery since 2010. I just have been reading some of the other posts and obviously it is somewhat common. I did have a friend who went through the same operation and he has zero complaints about anything. good for him! you may have something with The heart lung machine however, it is scarry \'pump head\' is a side effect and if you type in: president clinton pump head you\'ll find some very interesting data. the ocular problem would not work well for me, a classical prof musician. would be impossible to read the music. yikes. Try this product, it has worked for so many issues. go to shop.com/salandolina and type in OPC3 you can read about it, also I can send you some literature. keep up the great attitude Sal

Thankfully, the blind spots rarely prevent me from being able to read, they are usually slightly to my peripheral vision and they only last 5 minutes.

I am 3 months postoperative for MVP repair and had ocular migraines my whole life until a few years ago. I got 20 (!) the day after surgery and, like you, no explanation from the docs at UCLA. I did have a small retina hemorrhage during surgery which has now repaired itself. The vision issues have lessened over the past couple of weeks, and I hope they will go away completely.

Hi Scott, I am four year post op, and I have had ocular migraines for years. It was kind of scary at first (lasting for 20 minutes, and rainbow prism\'s going across my eyes) and then I asked my eye doctor and he said it is often triggered by aged cheese, wine, chocolate, or caffeine. Caffeine is a big one for me, even green tea. After surgery I asked for tea because I didn\'t want milk to cause phlegm and I didn\'t want to cough, but right away the rainbow prism\'s came. So I drank a lot of water. (I do not get headache pain with the migraine, just rainbow prisms across my eyes, and I can not drive, read, or watch TV for 20 minutes ). Sylvia

Hi Scott, I am close to 1 yr out from AVR and have had the occular blind spots and the bright zig zag lights. They last 20 min, and sometimes I have a slight headache. They apparently are common after valve surgery. No explanation or therapy has come from any of my doctors. They are supposed to decrease over time, and eventually go away. I am hopeful, as they are less frequent. Yet still scary and annoying. Tracy
