Sounds like you're doing great Renee! So you've got cardiac rehab coming up? You'll find that recovery goes even faster. And, stay with it! I had mitral valve repair thirteen years ago, and I still go to cardiac rehab two or three times a week. Cardiologist says to keep at it.

Hi Renee - One more thing, did Cleveland Clinic and Gillinov do both a resection and chord work for you? I see there are two schools of surgeons out there - those that do mostly resection and those which employ chord work also... I'm finding it very overwhelming ! Thanks J Alex

Hi Renee - So happy to see your upbeat post. I'd like to hear a bit more about your Cleveland Clinic experience? ( I will be having a similar repair when I schedule it) Were you super happy with the care at CC ? It seems quite hectic to get things scheduled.

Phyllis Petersen Dr. Gillinov did my mitral valve repair in October 2016. I recently had an echo and my cardiologist is very happy with what he sees. I had a great experience at CC. Once you are there, you will be very impressed by how smoothly everything goes. I met Dr. Gillinov before my surgery and he was very open to any questions I might have. He also stopped by my room when I was in stepdown. Anything you need, just ask, and if they can they will definitely try to help. Good luck!

Renee, I'm sorry you are having complications. You are where you need to be. You are in the best hospital. Trust the doctors. The important thing is to get better and if you need to be in ICU for a while, so be it. The recovery process can be slow and can have complications. Hang in there and God bless you.

Hello Renee. I was worried about the full sternotomy as well but as the others have said it really wasn’t that bad at all. Dr. Giilinov repaired my mitral and tricuspid in February 2022. Don’t worry too much as you have one of the best surgeons in one of the best facilities in the world. Prayers for your speedy recovery.

Deena Z It's true. I was told that the incision wouldn't hurt much and it didn't. -- after the first week. But you will be extremely tired. I wasn't told this and was caught by surprise, which made me think something was wrong with me. So, don't be surprised how utterly exhausted you feel, but know that won't stop your nurse from getting you out of bed the day after your surgery!

. What is amazing, and I wish I also told, is that while I was so tired the first four days, I was so happy how fast I started improving. So, keep the faith. You will be okay; your decision to go to such a great hospital and surgeon put you on a path of an excellent recovery. Godspeed,

Hi Renee, I`m in Appleton, WI and have been diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse with severe reguritation. I'm on my own to find a surgeon and found this site last week via YouTube videos.

I have a complex Medicare/insurance coverage plan which restricts me. Anyway, they will cover Cleveland Clinic and Franciscan Health in Indianspolis so I'm focussing on those facilities. Your appt is far out. My PCP is concerned about that.
