Paul,
I was released from the Clinic today, 12/9, following recent valve repair surgery by Dr. Pettersson. I am 51 and was faced with the exact dilemma; tissue or mechanical. I was completely locked in on a tissue valve for similar lifestyle reasons as you... until, I met Dr. Pettersson. He said he could install either valve and recommended a mechanical valve because a re-surgery would likely not be required and living on Coumadin was low risk and very manageable/stable. Conversely, if you have a bio-valve you will, with 100% certainty require another more risky surgery in approx. 15 years. At the end of my meeting, the doctor said I could sleep on it and tell him in the morning when we are in OR. Once in the OR, I told the doctor that I selected an On-X aortic mechanical valve. After careful consideration, I came to the conclusion that I had to follow the doctors recommendation... It just did not make sense to have to go through this entire process again in 15 years. Furthermore, I have two family members who have been on Coumadin for 15-20 years without complication and decided I could do it too! You will do well in either choice you make. The Cleveland Clinic and Dr. Pettersson are amazing! Best of luck to you. Jeff V.

Paul Lupinski Jeff, it's amazing that you and I both have Dr. Pettersson. My wife and I met him last week when we were here for pre-op testing, and we're so impressed with his soft-spoken, kind and brilliant demeanor. We are praying that he decides my valves are ok, and doesn't need to replace them. If he does, I am mostly sure I'm going to tell him I'd like an On-X mechanical valve. Like you said, it just makes sense to heed his advice. We are in great hands here at the Cleveland Clinic, aren't we?
Thanks for your encouragement! It means a lot.

Jeff V. Paul, I went into surgery expecting 1 and perhaps 2 replacement valves when I woke. I had a shot at MV repair but thought my AV was going to be replaced. I was shocked when I learned in the ICU that no valves were replaced. My MV was repaired and Dr. Pettersson then determined that my AV insufficiency was mild and did not warrant replacement at this time. I understand that while I was on the pump, he also re-examined my most recent echos and determined that the valve should remain in place. He expects my native AV may be OK for another 15 years or more. So I guess I can save that issue for another day! I have an appt. at the Clinic on 12/11 and will stop by to see how well you are doing! Jeff

Tammy Pilcher Paul, I made a journal of favorite scriptures to take to Orlando with me for my surgery. Psalm 28:7 was in there. I chose one from my journal to write on a small piece of paper to take to the hospital the morning of surgery. It was Isaiah 41:13. "For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not, I will help thee."
