Dear Patty - Please know that we have all experienced what you are going thru to greater of lesser degrees. I pray for you to have some comfort of spirit while your heart heals. Even though you feel like crap ... it gets better. Give yourself a year to be feeling more like yourself again. At times, you'll wonder what it feels like to have your heart back to normal. You will find a new normal since the surgery does change the rate of your heart beat and you will be weak as your gradually gain your strength back. Within a year you'll feel more like the yourself again ... keep the faith and be easy on yourself, do what you can and rest when you need to ... gradually up-time will exceed rest time, do a cardio therapy program ... your energizer bunny will emerge again.

My hubby was diagnosed with mitral valve regurgitation at the age of 70 (2015). We agreed with his cardiologist and heart surgeon that it was best to get his valve repaired when he was in great health instead of waiting until he was 80 and possibly not in good health. We are so thankful we did it (July 2015) because after two months he was back at work (he's an attorney who loves his job - not an oxymoron [lol]), and no more shortness of breath or irregular tiredness.
After his most recent check up with his cardiologist (Sept. 2017), he confirmed that "he hears NO leakages" in his heart, thank God!
We are praying for you and your family Patty for a successful surgery and a speedy, healthy recovery!

Hi Patty, Thinking about you today! I had heart surgery at Mo. Baptist in St. Louis in 1999. Dr. Nick Kouchoukos was my surgeon. I have since moved away from St. Louis, but lived there for many years. I know a lot of the same nurses that took care of me are still working at Mo Baptist in the Cardiac ICU as I've been there recently. They'll take great care of you.

Hi Patty -- I had the same surgery exactly 5 months ago. A month after surgery, I was attending cardiac rehab 3 days a week. At first, I could barely walk up the stairs and those first couple months were tough. Now, I'm at the gym 3 days a week lifting weights and doing 45 min of aerobics. I'm 67 and feel better than I have in years! Good luck to you and all the best for a successful surgery and long, happy, healthy life.
