I am allowing myself several days to feel this deep grief then need to get strong yet compassionate for the 3 siblings that I teach who lost their Mom and brother, and the daughter of the coach (Sasha) that I work with. It is going to be very hard but I know they will need me

Your shower chair suggestion was a good one. I loved mine so much i still use it. Only drawback was standing back up in the shower without using my arms. Tough. Nancy closed her eyes and reached in for a boost. I suggested showering together but was soundly rebuffed. I reminded her that we did it when we first got married but still a big no. I considered suggesting a young female shower attendant but decided against it. I was already on thin ice.

Richard Munson We have 2 golden retrievers in our training class. Both are service and reader dogs. Very laid back. Very smart. Shadow not a good candidate. Too high energy. Sled dogs in general might not be great candidates. 20 years ago my mother was in a nursing home with dementia. She loved our Alaskan malamute yukon. So the doctor suggested bringing him in to the lobby area to see if it would help her. It was a disaster. No details forthcoming but there were overturned chairs in the picture. Strangely, my mother remembered him instantly.

Speaking of pictures, this was at a dog friendly motel / dump with no hot water in the wilds of west virginia halfway home with our new bundle of joy. I was sick possibly with covid, shadow had worms, enough said, and the clerk at the front desk was a norman bates look alike. I slept with one eye open most of the night. Nancy did not want us to get another dog for very legitimate reasons. Our age being a big one. Plus cassie was the “it” girl. Still is by the way. However, she also saw me failing mentally over her loss. And i was. So, we made a pact with our elaine that she would mind shadow once we passed on and she comes to the house every other week to cement the bond. Plus she just lost one of her huskies so she knows the breed. Sled dogs are not an easy breed of dog to live with. We also downsized a bit from 120 down to 60. I am just not a small dog person, which would have been more practical. Shadow could never replace cassie but he is his own person. We do not compare. Its not fair to either dog. Our trainer is also a canine police dog trainer so she is used to strong willed dogs. She actually learned her trade in germany and she is no nonsense.

Pamela Gregory You're too important to everyone to leave us any time soon! We look forward to the entertainment! Nice to have an emergency plan for Shadow that is comfortable though. I could never replace Maisy. Maybe after a couple of years break I will be ready for another, but as you said not a substitute. Maybe not a puppy though! We got lucky with Maisy being amazing even as a puppy. No mess in the house, no chewing furniture, no crazy barking, no jumping on people, just adorable. That being said, we had a yellow lab that was totally crazy, barked all the time, jumped on people, and generally had extremely high energy for all 10 years of her life!!! Same owners, different tempered dogs. You never know kind of like children. I like big dogs too but it would be nice to be able to put one on an airplane with me. I would not be comfortable with under the plane for a big dog. Too scary for them, me, and I have heard a horror story or 2.

Richard Munson When the time is right, you will make the right decision. Other than a weekly visit to our local restaurant ,shadow normally has one of us around. Its part of our commitment. Airplane travel with a pet has not improved and may have deteriorated so we don’t do it. Not high on my list of travel choices anyway. Driving is more relaxing in my world. Adopting a shelter dog is a wonderful thing. There are so many in need. For me, i prefer starting from scratch, with a puppy but it has its drawbacks for sure. We have some past table leg reminders.

Just a quick shout out to you and a hope and prayer that you are coping from your recent loss. We had our own shadow crisis on monday which has us on pins and needles ever since. He had a seizure which only lasted a few seconds outside in his enclosure. Upside down twitching and foaming mouth. It was over once i got outside. Rushed him to the vets and nothing showed up in his exam or bloodwork. By the time we got there he was his normal self. Did he eat something bad? Epilepsy is not unusual in siberian huskies or is it a one and done. If it recurs, we will move to the next step but until then all we can do is watch and wait.

Pam, my heart breaks with you especially after going thru the same scenario only 2 years ago. You know deep down you did the right thing to ease the suffering of your dear friend but you also question if you could have held off. It can be gut wrenching. I had my doubts right up until that very moment and beyond. I still question it at times. Your family will be your rock to help you cope ( and you will believe me). But it takes time. Right now the wound is still open. Think of the great times you had with your buddy and that wound will eventually heal but never totally go away. You don’t want it to go away completely. I am always available to assist in any way if you feel the need to reach out. I could even provide my email if you want it. Try and think positive thoughts. My prayers are with you during your mourning. I recall a conversation with a good friend who was not a dog person who told me after we lost cassie while trying to console me that she was like a family member. I remember thinking that she was not like a family member, she was a family member. Stay strong.

It would be an honor to get updates on how maisy is doing. I am happy to see more people post pictures of their pet/family members on this site. Does not matter if they are dogs, cats, or birds, etc, they still have special meaning. Not sure about pet tarantulas. I am convinced they aid in recovery, i know my cassie helped me bounce back. Now shadow helps to keep me strong. My first posting way back in 2021 was me on my first day home after surgery with cassie laying next to me on the bed with her head in my lap. She stayed for hours and believe me, it was a big head. That picture is my calling card when i post here and hangs on the wall in my bedroom. What convinced me then that i was on a good site was adams comment saying “ i love this picture”. I will never meet adam but i know he is a good person. The same can be said for you.

Richard Munson We have a pair of golden retrievers in our weekly dog training class. Both are far advanced over shadow but they provide him some doggie mentoring we hope. In both cases they are certified therapy dogs and reader dogs at a local school. Shadow will never reach that level but he has come along way since we began. Siberians have a crazy side. We have the only siberian husky in our little village that is literally inundated with goldens, labs, and now doodles. We try and walk him a few miles each day and once they see his eyes and how he sits for us until they pass, they are all impressed. No meeting and greeting with other dogs is allowed by our trainer. Too many bad things can happen. Just yesterday we crossed paths with a doddle walking lady that wanted her dog to meet shadow. She asked me if he was friendly. I said no. After she passed i said i lied, he really is friendly but saying no is easier. Yes, i got a dirty look.

Richard Munson Our trainer has a certain credo and its that our dogs are being trained to keep them safe. By that she means safe near other dogs, safe from picking up something bad off the ground that may or not be good to eat and safe if for some reason your dog gets loose in your company. If you walk your dog with any regularity at some point these will occur. After all, they’re dogs.

Pamela Gregory Good Morning, Maisy is doing much better as of yesterday when the steroids kicked in. They are taking some of the inflammation in her lungs down so she can breathe easier. I have been making her egg, chicken liver, rice, pumpkin, and beets for breakfast and ground beef or turkey, green beans, rice, sweet potatoes, with gravy for dinner. She is eating all of this in addition to her regular food (which is farmer's dog) . She want to go on our regular long walks in the wood but we are doing strolls in the neighborhood with lots of sniffing and seeing people. Dr. Doom and Gloom at the emergency this weekend wanted us to put her down on the spot but there was no way. Her regular vet confirmed she does have lung cancer but gave her the steroids to make her more comfortable and an appetite enhancer which has definitely worked! We know this is a temporary solution, but if gives us time to love and spoil her. Also wrap our heads around this. She is definitely happy right now and I pray for guidance when we need to help her. Do NOT want her to suffer. She has been too good. Also doing some holistic things a pet guru has suggested for the anemia and to try to get as much quality time with her as possible. You are so sweet to ask. Give Shadow extra love.

Richard Munson You will know when its time. In the meantime, enjoy the maisy love. Dogs can be pretty resilient. As much as shadow has wormed himself into our lives i still have my cassie moments. No question that she sent shadow to us. Just by reading your post i can tell you are more than just a dog owner, you are a dog person. There is a difference. Just finished reading about a hurricane story where a cop saved a dog that someone tied to fence post in florida. Cruelty has no bounds. If they find this animal ( human does not fit) he or she should be tied to the same pole before the next storm. I would be happy to do it.

Richard Munson I also was reading that diet along with shorter walks. Don’t want her to get hefty either. She eats better than me. You didn’t mention corn on the cob. A glass of wine first? Shadow eats purina salmon based sensitive stomach large breed dry dog food. He also gets a probiotic and vitamin pill in the morning. He had the runs early on and this is what cured it so we just stuck with it. So he can’t complain. Neither can mr. Chewy.

Pamela Gregory I was extremely blessed! My Sister in Law happens to live 35 mins from CC. They opened their home to me for the whole process. There are several hotels right next to CC. I believe one is a Holiday Inn that has a shuttle the 3 blocks right up to the hospital. I stayed in that the first time I visited and it is mostly hospital patients. They offer a discount to CC patients too. There is a fancier hotel one block away that accomodates the hospital but I can't remember the name. I'm sure it will be easy to find. Several other options are available but these are the ones I know about. The care was top notch at CC. They are number one for a reason. Even though not convenient, this is your life
