Lisa I wish you the best tomorrow. After time in hospital, I went to a rehab facility for two weeks. It was much better than going home and Medicare paid for it. I received skilled care,occupational therapy and mild physical therapy. Came home for a week and started cardiac rehab for 12 weeks. Best decision I made was rehab. I rested and so did all at home.

Lisa Hoyt I'm alive! Hard to message because my fingers are swollen. Thanks for insight, considering options

Good luck w your upcoming surgery. I spent 4 days in ICU and forgot to bring an eye pillow, which may have been a challenge to keep on considering positioning and all the tubing and IV. I asked my sister to bring me my sunglasses to cut down on the nighttime glare and brightness of constant lights. Hoping in the future the medical establishment will realize that minimal lighting is valuable for healing and a good night's rest. Warm wishes, Mary

Lisa-just finding your post. Protein is huge to recover. Hospital food is notoriously-not so good. A few favorite protein bars would be my suggestion. Send somebody out for them. You will live in the hospital gown so don’t worry about any clothing articles-other than for the trip home.
Best advise I received and now can pass along. Walk! Walk! Walk!
My thoughts will be with you.

For when you get home: a wedge pillow, which provides a bit of incline (rather than a pillow mountain) and will assist with getting out of bed (rather than lying flat). Also, a shower chair, either in the shower, or placed outside so that you can sit down and towel off without losing your balance.
For when you leave the hospital: bring a pair of loose sweatpants and wide shoes. You may find that your feet and belly may be a little swollen (which will go down within the week).
While lots of visitors sounds like a positive, it may be best to save many visitations for when you are home and feeling up to it.

I have asked people to stay away as I anticipate being grumpy-ish, but also the germ thing...It might sound silly, but I asked my daughter to remind me to do Wordle the next day, I don't want to lose my streak and that might get my brain motivated to function, lol.

Marie Myers I totally agree with the people staying away request. My emotions were all over the place, and I really didnt want to see people for the first 2 weeks at home. My husband got the brunt of my crankiness, and after that first 2 weeks at home, I was more willing to see other people.

Would suggest:

- If you have dry eyes, please take eye drops. I wish I had had those.

- Super loose clothing with front buttons / zipper for discharge.

- Please make sure you have family / friends who are available to get things that you may not know you need (for your stay as well as discharge). Thank goodness for those special people!

Hi Lisa, i saw on this website before my surgery to bring button down pajamas with pockets. This helped so much, and button down shirts for cardiac PT, they monitor you for weeks. This was so helpful. I am 2 yr post-op mitral valve replacement, tricuspid repair, maze procedure. I will tell you I went home on Tylenol, I never had pain, just discomfort so don’t worry about Pain, but stay on top of it if it comes. Walking is your most important job, it will get you home. I am 73 yr and have a new lease on life, so grateful every day. This website of warriors has helped me so much, welcome to the warrior club, will say a prayer for you tomorrow 🙏

Lisa Hoyt Thanks Karen! I usually sleep in nighties, but I ordered a few clearance button down, stretchy knit jammies and really didn't pay attention other than the size and the price. When I pulled them out of the bag and saw that most had some sort of heart pattern I did a double take! I am 65, hate taking strong pain meds but will if necessary, goal being no meds. Thanks for your prayers!
