Hey Kenny,
Just read your story, it sounds like you and I have been on similar paths with our heart conditions. Although, you have had more valve replacements than I, what a journey! How was your last surgery on June 30th? You had a St. Jude valve installed for the mitral replacement, I had that one put in in 1992, is this your first mechanical?

Kenny Knox Thanks for the note Michael. Last surgery was good- received a St. Jude for the aortic valve. First mechanical and so far so good. Had an issue with Atrial Flutter but once I had that resolved, I haven't had any reoccurences. Most likely have another valve replacement in the near future for the pulmonary. The CC thinks I'd be a good candidate for the Melody. It's not fully approved in the USA right now but the CC can do it with a special approval. We'll see.

My biggest concern at this point is not being able to attend the national championship when Ohio State plays in January.

Kenny Knox Recovery can be pretty smooth. I had a setback that put me behind two weeks. If the doctors aren't pressed to operate now, scheduling it for after January may be wise. If your insurance is on a calendar cycle it may help you avoid paying double deductibles/out of pocket maximums.
I agree that OSU will be there in January.

Peter Bergan Thanks. Interestingly enough, my insurance is on a calendar cycle but I was recently in the hospital for a staph infection near my eye. Freak injury, but I was in the hospital for 5 days and the visit (together with the costs of my son's birth in July) ate up my entire deductible and out of pocket maximums, so I actually have a financial incentive to do the surgery this calendar year. Nonetheless, I am not going to let finances control the decision. I will see how the surgery consultation goes and see when the surgeon thinks best to do it.

Kenny, thank you for easing my fears about Coumadin. I read your story, and you and my 31 year old hubby have VERY similar stories. He had a bicuspid aortic valve, the Ross Procedure was performed, and now he got a mechanical valve replacement by Dr. Svennson! How crazy!

Cleveland Clinic is the best! I am sorry about your complications but overjoyed you were able to receive the BEST care available and are now on the mend. April 9 I had mitral valve repair there and I literally would trust my life with those folks, and did! Thank God you are OK!

There was a doctor that posted online a few days ago about looking for people that had the Ross procedure done. He was in South Carolina and had some data about long lasting effects of the Ross Procedure.
Prayers aloft for you and your loved ones. Bob O.

Dear Kenny, thank you very much for your attention. My son Joaquim is 2 years old, he was born with aortic stenosis and now he will need a surgery, maybe he will need Ross procedure, but is possible just repair his valve. I have a lot of doubts about Ross procedure in children, how long is necessary surgery again, how about limited diary activities. I would like to hear about your experience. I am sorry my English, I am living in Brazil. Best regards.

hi Kenny: thank you for the kind words the night before my surgery. You are right they tell me I'm doing great and its been easier than I thought. I just looked through your pics and your scars look great. I have 1 question for you, did you have a hard time taking deep breathes? Nurse is telling me it is part of recovery and reminds me its been only 3 weeks ago.
thanks again Kenny

Kenny Knox Hey Al- I'm glad to hear you're doing great! Yes, taking deep breaths was tough at first. So was coughing and laughing! I imagine it'll take some time but I can't recall how long it took me. I'd say it was longer than 3-4 weeks though. Good luck on a speedy recovery!
